Just read on the internet that some are having allergic reactions due to
their use of sucralose. (Splenda)

I have been having some itching and difficulty swallowing (more than usual)
and I wonder if others on this newsgroup are having similar symptoms which
their consumption of sucralose may be causing.

I have heard that, never was a problem for me, but I hate the after taste of
Splenda so don't use it anymore. I use Sweetzfree or Aspartame. Are you
eating things like low carb ice cream, sour cream etc.? Sometimes that can
cause difficulty with swallowing if I eat too much, at least for me.

I stopped eating most low-carb prepared foods including ice-cream many
months ago.

I only eat sour cream occasionally, but I do eat a lot of cream cheese and
other cheeses.

I stopped using sucralose five days ago and my ability to swallow has been
improving daily. I think (hope) I will be able to eat normally again by the
end of this month.

I had an appointment to see a doctor about having my throat stretched later
this month, but I don't think I will need to have that done now.

I have found I can manage without Splenda, and all the other sugar
substitutes. I will now simply use a small amount of sugar when my sweet
tooth needs attention.

That sounds like a good plan. I'm really trying to get off all the
substitutes myself.

I too have been getting hives off and on. I don't use splenda in my
coffee any more. But it's in many sugar free things like ice cream and
stuff.
I have to take diphenhydramine hydrochloride an Equate allergy pill
every few days to stop itching and blotching. Cetirizine HCL also works
but not quite as well or fast.

That's why I like to eat as much unadulterated, prepackaged food as
possible. Fresh fruit, veggies, plain protein. If I have ice cream I have a
little of the real thing with strawberries. The old Keep It Simple Stupid
approach. Works for me.

I have found ALL artificial sweeteners make me nauseous - I get pain
in my abdominal region and headaches and have experienced those
symptoms when trying sweeteners, years before my dx.

I have salivated over the *sweet* diabetic-friendly recipes offered
around the world of google but know I simply cannot take the chance.

Is that a bummer or what??!!!

Freckles, I have splenda only in tea and I have never had a reaction
like what you cite. But everyone is different, What causes an allergy
in one person doesnt cause the same allergy in the other person.

--------------------------------------------------

I have used Splenda for more than four years and I have only recently
started having an itching problem. The problem with my swallowing has been
on-going for much longer. I used much more sucralose daily than what one
would normally use in a cup or two of tea or coffee.

As I understand it, an allergy to any food can start up at any time, after
the first use, and can be as serious the first time it flare up as at any
other time.

This is now my sixth day without sucralose or any foods containing it, and
my allergy seems to have improved greatly. No itching, and able to swallow
much better.

As long as all seems well I will continue to avoid that or any other
artificial sweeteners, and when I have my next scheduled doctor visit, which
will be in about six weeks, I will consult him on the mater.

I don't Have problems with Splenda but am sure people can have an allergy to
it...like any food item. I had trouble swallowing, told my Dr and ended up
having an upper GI...I have a Hiatal Hernia. I still have an uneasy feeling
swallowing...more like feeling what ever I swallowed got stuck. Now that I
know what it is it doesn't worry me as much.
