I have the KF set to delete "name only".
When I tell it to delete messages that list Chung as "Author:Andrew
Chung, PHD (or whatever he is using)" it deletes almost every current
message regardless of who the author was.

What am I doing wrong?

Read this when you get time
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/oldnetting/news/extra/nkill.html

Here's the short version;
Wildcards
Killfiles will also respond to wildcard characters, meaning characters that
can represent any character or string of characters.

To take the example of "advertise" above, if you place that word in the
killfile it will screen only messages containing that exact word. But by
using a wildcard character, which may be the asterisk (*) or question mark
(?) but can vary from system to system, more variations on a word can be
filtered.

Therefore "advertise*" will filter out "advertise", "advertisement",
"advertised", etc.

However don't be overzealous about where you place the wildcard, because
"adv*", for example, would filter everything above but also words like
"adverse" "adversity", "adverb", etc., which might be relevant to your
interests.

Whoever suggested that I use only chung's address that appears between

all the messages in the group including the ones I had not viewed yet.

The only time I have ever found a KF useful is when a poster floods a group
so badly that it is imposable to see real post.

I disagree with that statement too. For the most part I post things

Your answer has nothing whatever to do with the workings of Agent, so
was not an answer at all. Instead you were trolling me on another
subject to see how I would react. You got the desired result, so I do
hope you are happy now.

Right now you are wasting bandwidth with your continued trolls and so

Chuck,

I believe he is trolling you due to the 'political' nature of your
signature. Never mind that you are positive poster to this newsgroup, but
because you probably hold views that he doesn't agree with no matter how
true they are he had to take a swipe at you.

I wish I could help you with your kill-file. Unfortunately I do not use
Agent. Which version are you using, perhaps I could dredge up some
information for you. Also if you are able to paste your kill-file into a
response possibly having more eyes see it would help... although I would
just post what you are trying to use to kill-file Chung with.

No
My answer was that KFs are a waste of time.
(This is not Agent specific -- KFs in general)
You either end up killing off to many posts or not enough.
It is simply easer not to read a post that you do not want to read than
trying to set up a KF that eliminates post you do want to read.

If the sig is longer than the rest of the post then it is spam.
And in this case it is also off topic.

I have only made a few post to this group but I have found this group to be
most unfriendly.
I asked a simple question about onions, because I have an unusual reaction
to them.
I want to know if anyone else had experienced the same.
The answers I got were mostly actuations that I was eating to much or that
onions could not cause a problem.
Not much support there.

Marking a subject OT can still be trolling.

troll v.,n. To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable
responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which
in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one
trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite.

The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and
flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do,
while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact
a deliberate troll.
Trolls are particularly prevalent in discussion groups on religion or
politics or other traditionally controversial topics. A troll will openly
denounce another user's opinion or denounce a religion that newsgroup users
seem to be members of. A newsgroup troll always makes caustic statements
that never get to the source of a discussion but are purely aimed at raising
havoc. These statements are referred to as "flamebait".

Or are you baiting Davybear ? A sig like yours will draw a lot of fire. But
I guess if you like to argue, it's your nickle.

BTW, did you check for wildcards in your killfile? It's either going to be a
? (question mark) or a *(asterisk). I don't know which one is used by Agent.
If you have one of those symbols in your KF it could be the cause of your
missing messages.

It has from a few, and only a few, since the first day I posted it.
That was quite some time back, perhaps even a couple of years. In the
beginning those flaming me over it were all Bush supporters that
believed all the lies being parroted by Bush, Cheney, Rove and
company.

I very much look forward to the day when it is no longer necessary to
post it in order to keep the total up to date because there will not
be any American soldiers in Iraq anymore.

Okay, now I know what is meant by wildcards. I was accustomed to the
asterisk being used when searching for a file, etc. but not the
question mark. I don't believe I have seen any of them in Chung's name

Chuck,

I downloaded a copy of agent. The only way I could get a filter to
work was to highlight the offending message and right-click on it.
Then go down to filters, then new kill file. If the word "Author:"
wasn't infront of the persons name, it didn't work.
Something else to check. I kinda like Agent, but it's a bit more than
I need.

The idea of filtering only a single post from Chung by right clicking

only DELETED every single post whether I had read it or not.

I have a later version of Agent that I bought last year. I stopped

this older version and become accustomed to the newer one.

I think when I close it this time I will do just that.

Davybear,

Onions affect my blood sugar as well. One thing that I've learned from
reading this newsgroup would be that different people can spike from
different foods. I spike from eating anything with a carb in it, while
others are able to eat foods that I can only dream about.

If you are smart enough to figure out how to use the kill file
correctly they work far better than you describe. I only filter chung
troll posts and don't lose any valid posts. And it does not matter
how many times the troll nut case changes his email address, he does

no that does not make it spam. just because you don't like it,
doesn't make it anything other than a sig.

and there is no rule anywhere that sigs have to be on topic for the
specific newsgroup.

welcome to reality. you were looking for a specific type of response.
you didn't get it because people didn't share your experiences. That's
life. and it has nothing to do with a lack of support.

No. Instead I moved over to Agent 4.0 and am starting over. It seems
to be working well, except the size of the font is terribly small. I'm
sure that is pretty easy to change.

Did that. I works just fine.

Can you tell me how to get all of my posts in Agent 4.0 to include my
sigline without me having to do it every single time? I have looked
high and low, but haven't found the option so far.

Tools then Options then Posting Messages then Signatures. Also look
for Personas under Posting Messages. You can set up a separate
Persona for each newsgroup you post too.

If you want to be able to select between multiple signatures then
simple set them up under the Signatures section. If you want to have
a single signature added automatically then you need to create a
persona and select the signature in the Persona window that comes up
when you click on Personas under Posting Messages.

I have multiple signatures and do not automatically add any to my
posts. When I am ready to add my signature I click on the signature
button that looks like a feather pen and an ink bottle on the tool bar
and simply select one from the list.

I had already done that. However, in the bottom menu bar where is says
Signature: it then says [None].

I will leave this one that way and see if my sigline is there when
this posting appears.

Now clicking on "Send Now" with fingers crossed.

As I said before, no sigline unless I specify it in every single post.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

It will show up this time because I have selected it.

I wasn't clear. You have to create the signature under signatures
first.

Then create a persona and in the persona window while creating it
choose the signature to be associated with that persona for the
specific newsgroup.

Ok.
Under Signatures I am calling it Signature.
Then under persona I have GrandpaChuck

Care to bet whether or not it will work, especially since it says
after Signature: [None].

Edit the Persona and in the edit screen look to the upper right you
see 2 fields, one for new messages and one for replies, choose the
signature from the drop down list.

Voilà !!
By golly I do believe we got it. I knew it had to be simple.

side note:
Have you found a good price on the 1tb hard drives? I noticed that
Best Buy has a 1tb external HD for $499. If I invest in a large
external HD will I be able to run most programs from it?

What is your opinion of the new OS from Microsoft? Buy the upgrade or
wait awhile? Since it is $99 per computer I want to know there is
something worth the money before buying into it.

Thanks again Mack.

Oops! Now I can't see any way to send this. The Send Now and Send

I should have just emailed you screen shots but I figured some of the
4.0 + newbies might be interested in it as well.

499.00 is a good price. You should be able to run just about anything
on it except the OS (windows itself). if you are going to use it for
running applications, make sure you plug it into a USB 2.0 port. If
you have a 1.0 port you can get an add on card to plug into your PCI
slots and it will add 2 to 4 USB 2.0 ports.

Personally, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to get the newer version.
Let others run it for a while and find the security flaws. When a few
security patches have been released, then look into it.

I don't know if this is true:
Vista loophole offers free clean install to upgraders
Get a new Vista installation for the price of an upgrade

Tom Sanders in California, vnunet.com 01 Feb 2007

Windows Vista is suffering from a loophole that allows users to
perform a clean installation of the operating system from an upgrade
DVD.

A clean installation generally performs better than an update. Upgrade
versions of the operating system also are roughly 35 per cent cheaper
than the full versions.

Microsoft with previous operating systems provided so-called upgrade
keys that allowed the software to determine that a user was eligible
for a discounted upgrade. It required that users at some point during
the installation inserted the installation CD for their old operating
system.

Windows Vista however doesn't verify upgrade compliance this way.
Instead it blocks clean installations from an upgrade disk and
requires that the setup file for the upgrade is executed from inside
an existing operating system.

Microsoft support however is providing information on having a clean
installation on a used system, IT author Paul Thurrott claimed.

The company advises that delaying ordering the product key will result
in a clean installation. After the installation is completed, users
have to run the installation file again from within Windows Vista,
enter the registration key and essentially upgrade the Windows Vista
installation with another Vista installation.

Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
