I am convinced that my allergies do raise my BG. I saw the first few tufts
of cottonwood blowing two days ago. And my BG rose above 200. Saw a little
more yesterday. BG went over 300. By nightfall my allergies had gotten so
bad. My nose was just running and running. Itchy eyes, sore throat, the
whole 9 yards. By today I was in search of Butterbur, hoping it would help.
4 stores either were out or didn't carry it. Finally found an expensive
bottle at Whole Foods. Also bought some kind of nettle lozenges at another
store that is supposed to help. Both do seem to help a little. At least
they take the edge off. But I can only take them twice a day and my
allergies start getting bad again before I can take another dose.

Thankfully the cottonwood is usually only really bad for a few days. But in
the meantime? Bleh.

I can not take any prescription things for allergies. Zyrtec gives me
hives. Claritin did nothing. Allegra give me sinus and throat infections.
All of the nasal sprays and drops cause nose bleeds. Patanol stings very
badly and makes my eyes redder.

I do use baby shampoo on my eyes daily. And some of the OTC drops do help
some. Bleh.

Ever try MSM for seasonal allergies? Some use a number of grams 4 to 6
spread thru the day. Quercetin may also help according to others.

Knocks me out flat for two days. And now I don't think it is allergies at
all. I was throwing up a lot last night. Today I have all of the symptoms
that Angela had. Dr. tried to tell us she was depressed. I'm thinking
not...

I take both of those daily. Doesn't seem to help with allergies.

I am convinced of it. Allergies cause my diabetes. After weeks of
FBG 90s in the 90s I thought I would treat myself to a restaurant
meal. So I stopped at a Thai take out in a local shopping center
for some golden cashew chicken. This is very similar to the way
I cook at home. I decided to look for the peak in my BG. Two
hours afterward it was 123. After three hours it was 138, and
at four hours it was 147. About 7 in the evening I decided to
break my rule and eat despite the high BG. After a
huge tuna salad and some orange juice I measured
again. An hour after eating BG *dropped* to 93.

There was something in that Thai meal that I am allergic to. It has
to be. Then when I ate again I diluted it. Tues FBG was
normal at 96. Wednesday 114, Thursday back down to 98 which is still
a bit high. So I see a three day delay. FBG peaks three days
after I eat something I am allergic to.

Thursday afternoon I did some yard work. I have HEPA air filters
inside my house. When I go outside, I should wear a mask
filter, but I didn't. As I was removing branches from an overgrown arbor
vitae, I began to sneeze. I became mildly asthmatic for a few days.
My FBG was 90 Thursday morning, and and
98 Friday morning. Saturday 109, and this morning 103. If I can
avoid yardwork and restaurant food, I should be back in the 90s
tomorrow.

I cannot escape the conclusion that allergies -- all allergies --
raise my BG.

I don't eat Thai food. There is too much sugar in it. Had a neighbor who
was Thai in CA. She was always inviting us to parties. I always brought my
own food. A salad. I might eat a bite or two of what she made, if that. I
couldn't handle any more. And I was not on insulin back then.

Dose? Then again you're in the moldy end of the State. Though actually
for the indoors environment its more an issue of ventilation, air filtration, and the use of a dehumidifier. And for some dust mites are an issue.

I only know the dose on the MSM and that is 1,000 mg in split doses. I take
it for Fibromyalgia. Lemme look up the Quercitin... It's 500 mg.

I am allergic to mold but don't notice it as a problem. Grass and trees are
the big things for me. My allergies that flare are clearly seasonal.

But... I am convinced now that there is something else going on. Might be
allergies too but... I am unable to eat much at all. Have only had white
rice today and I can only eat a few bites. Am chilling then sweating and
the nasal stuff is more like a cold.

Well I don't use sugar when I cook. Possibly that might have
something to do with it, but the dish did not taste sweet. I do not
recall any sweet Thai food, although spiciness can mask it.

I suspect allergy to hot peppers. Sugar might have raised my BG
for a few hours, but not elevated FBG for three days. Lately I use
turmeric instead of peppers.

Peppers are members of the nightshade family. I have no trouble with
potatoes or tomatoes, but I have cut out Bell pepper because of my
ELISA blood allergy test. Hot peppers were not tested.

FBG was back in target range this morning at 96.

In article <a84d99-...@jester.gnet>,
Way back when, when I was first diagnosed, I found that any Thai dish
with coconut milk in it gave me a prolonged blood sugar plateau. This
included a chicken lemon-grass soup. At one point, I bought a can of
unsweetened coconut milk and made something at home (to control for the
hidden sugar factor). Haven't had coconut milk in 15 years, now.

I am basing the sugar thing on how/what I saw Nipau cook and the recipes I
have seen. She once gave me a packet of Thai peanuts. I ate one without
looking at the ingredients and it tasted of pure sugar. Sure enough, they
had sugar in them. They were really weird because it wasn't a sugar coating
like Beer Nuts. Just not for me.

I bought a can of coconut milk but never used it. Someone (maybe here?) had
suggested it to me but I never did remember what I was going to use it for.
I found it when we did the big kitchen cleanup. Decided to put it down the
sink because I knew I would never use it. The stuff was like Crisco! I am
lucky I didn't clog the sink.

A 1000 mgs total for the day? If so I take more, often 6 grams total for the day
in two doses. For the flavonoids are a bit hit and miss. Some days rutin.
others quercetin, and still others citrus bioflavonoids tablets
plus I do it per teaspoonful for the first two and I forgotten the weights.
I do weigh the bulk MSM. I am pretty sure it the MSM that is the main player,
YMMV.

Several weeks ago, people were coming down with some sort respiratory virus and getting quite sick. It didn't apparently get me. I credit the vitamin D3 for
this escape as I was exposed.

Yes. That's what I currently take. I know that my dose is correct when my
pain level is decreased and my mobility is better. If my muscles are
locking up, it's enough. I had to take twice that amount for several years.
I take it with vitamin C to increase the absorption. If I take too much I
get headaches and sick to my stomach.

Well I screwed up. I had been taking oil of Oregano and I was giving it to
Angela too. I do keep an inventory list of my supplements and there were 3
bottles listed yet I had none. I went so far as to pull all of the bottles
out and check. I had to order more but it didn't come in time when I filled
our pill cases. So we went without it for about a month. I really do think
we need it. I won't be doing that again.

I don't know what it is that I have. I am still very sick. Feel weak,
exhausted, chilling and sweating and yet no low temp. or fever according to
my thermometer which undoubtedly is not reliable. They never are for me.
And I've had the big D several times today despite my only having white rice
to eat yesterday. I did force down whole wheat toast this morning because I
really couldn't stomach more rice. Apparently a mistake. So I am cooking
up another big pot of rice.

Vomiting can be be a symptom of B-vitamin deficiency. Take some
vitamins, eat meat, or a salad.

Think about possible IV infusions, and be sure a neighbor knows
your circumstances.

Be sure your dishes are squeaky clean and washed in hot water.

I could be the guilty party here. I have had cans that were bad such
as you describe. By trial and error I learned to buy coconut
milk in only in ethnic groceries that look like they have a high
turnover. If the canned stuff sits on the shelf for too long it
goes bad. Shake the can before you buy it. You can hear if the
stuff inside is liquid.

Lemongrass is a grass: botanical family poaceae. I would expect
several days of high BG from it.

Coconut is a member of the larger clade commelinids that also includes
grasses. I test these carefully. Some other commelinids do give me
trouble, but coconut does not.

We eat mostly on paper plates at home.

When coconut milk sits for a while, the "cream" rises to the top and
solidifies. There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, some recipes call for
using some of the "cream" part instead of oil to cook part of the dish, then
adding the rest. Otherwise, just shake it up. Or if you don't shake it up,
the firmer part will simply melt when you cook it and blend in with the
rest.
