I just discovered it - trying out AOL for 30 days/50 hrs etc.
I'm not very fond of AOL but it's moving a little faster since
I increased RAM in my ancient computer.

My brother opened a little box on my computer and asked
to chat - it was amazing - if I keep AOL, this will be the reason.
My brother in FL and I chatted for about an hour!

Anyone want to chat sometime? letme know
I'm LFer...@aol.com (LAnn aka Rita)

PS I know they have Aol instant messender in the new
Netscape 4 but how do people on other ISP's get it to work for them??
Or do they?

Hey, Thanks for the info Scott - I forwarded it to my
family and I've got Instant messenger on disk somewhere -
I'll send a copy of it to them.

Thanks so much for your help! :-)

It's not just in Netscape 4. It's not really even part of Netscape. AOL
just paid them to bundle it with Netscape 4.

It was available a free stand alone app a long time before that. It can
be
downloaded from all the usual popular download sites, in addition to
AOL's
web site (www.aol.com).

: but how do people on other ISP's get it to work for them??
:Or do they?

Yes they do. It's kind of confusing I know, but think of AOL Instant
Messenger as another form of ICQ. It allows people on the net to chat
with
one another real time.

However, it *also* allows people on the net to chat with people on AOL
and
vice versa.

The folks on AOL communicate with their non-aol net friends via instant
message, just as if those non-AOL folks were actually on AOL themselves.

Example. I don't have AOL myself, but I do have Instant Messenger.

My "IM" screen name is "ScotSter". So....assuming I have IM running,
you
could chat with me by sending an IM to "ScotSter" (just as if I were
actually on AOL).

I'll now be adding "LFerg917" to my buddy list.

The "aol.com" isn't necessary. The AOL Instant Messenger program acts
as
if everyone on it is in fact an AOL subscriber.

Oh and just to clarify, for those who don't sub to AOL AOL IM will work
with anyone on the net who has it (they don't have to be an AOL
subscriber.

HTH.
