Has anyone had urine "retention" problems when taking nardil??

For others who my be interested in another side effect, I has some tingling
in my finger tips, this was due to the nardil some how depleting vitamin B6
from my system. 100 mg of B6 every second day seems to have fixed this.
(thanks to Stephanie?). Pdoc was unaware of this side effect.

Any clues on the urine retention? or something that may alleviate anorgasmia
as another nardil side effect?

thanks

Hiya. The only tx I know of for urinary retention is a
cholinergic, such as pilocarpine or bethanechol.

Nardil and other hydrazine-derived drugs do cause B6 depletion
sometimes, yes. Surprised your doc didn't know this. (B6
supplements are standard for people taking the related anti-TB
drug isoniazid (INH), e.g.)

The sex problem has been discussed before...SSRIs cause it a lot
too. There are all sorts of things people have tried, and most
of them seem to work at least some of the time. My pdoc
mentioned an herb called marapuama (or muira puama) which I
don't hear too much about.

Hey Elizabeth

I'm so glad you're posting again...thought you'd quit for a while.

I had a thought...what are the symptoms of B6 depletion...could this have
anything to do
with Nardil poop-out? Look anything like depression?

B6 deficiency has been linked with depression.

Well that's interesting....anybody ever see any research related to this...
ie relationship between nardil poop-out and b6 deficiency?
Or for that matter any ad poop-out and any vitamin deficiency?

Thank you. :) I've been kind of frazzled lately, plus my keyboard
mysteriously died.

Paresthesias, anemia, decreased immune response, nausea/vomiting,
dermatitis, anorexia, fatigue.... I guess it could look sort of like
depression. (Hmm...you know, I stopped taking the isoniazid -- and
therefore, the pyridoxine HCl supplements -- not too long before the Nardil
started pooping out. Maybe coincidence. Well, I'm pretty sure I wasn't
extremely deficient -- no neuritis or anything like that.)

I looked at some web sites on B6 deficiency and a bunch of them mentioned
depression - although they weren't clear which manifestations of depression
they were talking about.

Nardil's seriously pooping on me, and I have anorexia (lost 15 lbs over the
last month) and pretty serious fatigue, but none of the really specific
symptoms like dermatitis or paresthesias.

But I still want to try B6 supplements just to see if that has an impact. How
many mg of pyridoxine/day were you taking, btw? Standard multivitamin
supplements have 2 mg, but from the web it looks like - conservatively - up to
50 mg is safe.

Should probably break down and check with my doc.

I know frazzled. I know keyboard death. Glad you're back.

I was taking 50mg/day. I think you should try it; I doubt it can hurt.

On the positive side, the replacement keyboard that I got is black. (Doesn't
match the rest of my hardware, though. Do you think the iMac has created
unrealistic expectations in that regard? :)

Yeah, I've already started taking it at that dose - I don't know if it's a
placebo effect or what, but I've been feeling a little better the past two
days.

Excellent. A black keyboard. I've never been into color coordinating my
hardware - on the other hand, I still have trouble matching my clothes so I'm
not an expert here.

Well, if it persists, who cares if it's placebo effect? :-) (The trick here
is that usually placebo effects don't persist...but anyway...!) I hope that
it does the trick. I think we should write a letter to the editor of an
appropriate journal if it does.

A former roommate of mine had a NeXT -- all black, but he had a red
keyboard. That was cool.

Elizabeth - I spoke with my GP re the Vit B6 - 50mg / day is fine but she
said that people taking an excess (100 + mg / day) can suffer psych
problems - she did not specify what these where.
