August of 2008, I went to the doctor to complain that I had to pee all the
time, it would stop and start and stop and start...when determined that it
was nothing to do with my prostate (I'm a 51 year old male), he figured it
was a urinary tract infection, and prescribed Vibramycin (Doxycyclene).
Almost immediately, I started to get depressed, crying twice a day real bad
(morning and night, an hour after taking the pill), but blamed it on a
recent break up with a long term girlfriend. Began to miss her dearly (I
ended the relationship), to the point of being heartbroken over losing her.
I began to hallucinate, seeing my dead relatives, beckoning me to join them
on the "other side".
I was driving on the highway with my eyes closed, wanting to die. I have no
relatives in north america, my 25 year marriage had ended 18 months earlier
when she found another guy on the internet, all our friends f*cked off and
disappeared when marriage ended, so aside from my boys (which my ex turned
against me), I was pretty much alone.
The sadness and depression grew worse, and I went back to my doctor to
complain of the depression and suicidal thoughts. The told me there was
nothing he could do, that the anti-depression meds would take 6 weeks to
kick in, and that if I had more suicidal thoughts, to immediately go to
emergency.
The next morning I had a breakdown in the parking lot in front of the new
VP, and drove myself to the hospital and was taken in my the emergency
people. (Ontario, Canada).
I sobbed uncontrollably and told the story, then lied down on the bed almost
catatonic. 2 hours later, the doctor and mental health people came to see me
(Did you buy knives or guns?)
I told the story again, and the doctor asked when all this began. I said, 2
weeks ago.......sh!t, 2 weeks ago when I started the medication.
What medication, he asked...I told him about the urinary infection and the
Vibramycin....he told me there could be a link and not to take it any more
and discharged me...I didn't take it that night...the next morning, felt
better (friday)...by monday, was back to my usual happy goofy self...

Unfortunately, damage was done, the VP had me terminated (with a generous
severence) and replaced me with his buddy from his last company.
My career ended, and thats another story..

Point is, I came close to killing myself because of a side effect from an
antibiotic. Go figure.

I scan on the internet led me to a web site full of people with similar
symptoms, including notes from parents of people who did kill themselves.

Pfizer and the government sent me questionnaires to answer, and that was
that....been a year, career f*cked up, ex wife engaged to man she left me
for...wow...what a year!

I am so sorry to read your story. I don't doubt that part of the
outbreak of depression in
your case may have been related to antibiotics. I had severe adverse
effects with
CIPRO - an antibiotic with an interesting military history:

http://www.westonaprice.org/healthissues/cipro.html

However, I think that you may have also been prepped by previous
suppressed
problems that were exhacerbated by this drug -- possibly it is in the
same class
as mine; it was used for the Anthrax scare in the 9/11 Catastrophe.

I think you have come out of this not that badly as you think, because
now you
have a chance to take advantage of the services and psychiatric meds
available.

I hope you will seek and you shall find.

Oh, absolutely right on that, supressed feelings all came out thanks to the
side effects...

I did 15 schools in 8 years in 4 countries, my in-laws never accepted me,
many good jobs I had, all ended when the company laid off tens of thousands
(telecom meltdown), and the medicine served to open up what was locked
up...

All is better now....well, no, nothing has changed in a year, but, I'm like
I was before, I dont give a sh!t about life's problems, can deal with
adversity, as that is all I've ever known....the meds lowered my guard and
let the emotions come out...

Man I been on that antibiotic like 20 times in the last 2 years. Yeah
really I am not kidding. I am one of those people that used up all the
antibiotics they did not work anymore or I been allergic to them. So my
doc gave me doxy I cant spell it LOL. Anyway it saved my ass. I took it
so much now that it is not affective anymore. I liked it cause it made
me sleep good. But it does mess up your stomach, and leave you tired. I
get a infection like every month. If it s not pollen or ragweed then it
is colds the flu etc... I was on a different antibiotic last week. It
was one that I used before and worn out. But if you take one a lot and
it does not work anymore, if you stay away from it for while it will
work again. Doxy never did all that stuff to me it did to you. But it
does make you feel pretty crappy whie your on it. But it works good. It
is a old and cheap antibiotic.

you do know antibiotics are 100% useless against viruses

If the patient doesn't know, certainly the doctor will not give an
antibiotic
for flu virus. They're also given conservatively for bacteriological
infections
because they weaken with constant use, I think.

I'm surprised by the first part of your statement, and don't know
about
asthma.

I have never known any antibiotic to have such extreme side effects.
Despite the association in time, I would be looking for another cause.

In your circumstances, I find that an alkalizer is enough to fix my URTI
symptoms, but I have never had them so badly. My wife keeps telling me
(usually at the dinner table) that a woman's urethra is only 4 cm (1.5 in)
long and she needs to wipe her bottom in the correct direction. It is true
however that the extra length and separation give a man a bit more protection.

My father died of prostate cancer, but my prostate is normal, and my blood
tests are normal. I had one high reading, but apparently an isolated one is
not unusual. My brother has inherited my father's condition. Get tested
once a year.

Doug.

I have taken this antibiotic for respiratory infection as well and had
the same serious
adverse effects. Antibiotics can have idiosyncratic effects on
different people.
This one does not agree with me at all-- possibly the lithium
interacts, but I doubt it;
dose may also be a variable.
