Uncle Sam Now America's No. 1 Drug Pusher
Every day some 6 million children – some as young as 2 or 3 – are
now given Ritalin and other stimulants at the urging of school
officials and psychiatrists. The reason: They are diagnosed with
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a recently
discovered mental "disease" whose symptoms include short
attention span, impulsive behavior, and difficulty sitting still.
Many more boys than girls are diagnosed with ADHD. In some
schools – including two school districts near Virginia Beach,
Virginia – as many as 20 percent of the boys are now given
Ritalin daily.
The strongest advocates of drugging children are the Department
of Education, educational bureaucrats and psychiatrists. The U.S.
consumes over 90 percent of Ritalin produced in the world. What
bureaucrats don't tell parents, however, is that Ritalin has
effects similar to amphetamines and is listed by the Drug
Enforcement Agency as a Schedule II controlled substance.
Despite these problems, bureaucrats often insist that "ADHD
children" be given Ritalin and other drugs. Parents who
resist are increasingly being threatened with charges of child
abuse and threats of having their children taken away from them.
For instance:
* In Albany, New York, Michael and Jill Carroll were charged with
child abuse when they told school officials they wanted to take
their 7-year-old son, Kyle, off Ritalin. They are now on a
statewide list of child abusers.
* In California, Dr. Robert Sinaiko had his medical license
revoked and was fined $99,000 by an administrative law judge for
taking a boy off Ritalin and prescribing alternative treatment.
* In Millbrook, New York, officials in the Millbrook school
district called police and child protective services when
Patricia Weathers took her 9-year-old son, Michael, off Ritalin
and other government-prescribed drugs.
Dr. Peter Breggin, founder of the Center for the Study of
Psychiatry, raises many chilling questions about the consequences
of drugging millions of children, in his recent book, "Talking
Back to Ritalin." Breggin states:
* The number of children being drugged has increased sevenfold in
the last few years.
* Ritalin and amphetamines (like crystal meth and other illegal
street drugs) have almost identical adverse effects on the mind
and behavior, including drug-induced behavioral disorders,
psychosis, mania, drug abuse and addiction.
* A large percentage of children who take Ritalin and other
stimulants become robotic, lethargic, depressed or withdrawn.
* Ritalin can retard growth in children by disrupting the cycles
of growth hormone released by the pituitary gland.
* Ritalin is addictive and can become a gateway drug to other
addictions.
* There is no solid evidence that ADHD is a genuine disorder or disease of any kind.
Dr. Breggin also explains that Ritalin is so harmful that the
U.S. military rejects applications from young men who have been
taking it.
Dr. Breggin is part of a rising chorus of medical authorities and
psychologists who oppose the wholesale drugging of children. Dr.
Kevin McCready of the San Joaquin Psychotherapy Center is
particularly outspoken in his opposition to the growing use of
drugs on children:
"The massive drugging of children in America is an absolute
scandal. ADHD is a myth, and an excuse to drug children to make
them more easily manageable – with no thought about the long-term
mental and health consequences for the children.
"Millions of children are being conditioned to take drugs thanks
to their daily dose of Ritalin, Prozac and other drugs. <b>Uncle
Sam is now the world's #1 drug pusher.</b>"
Dr. McCready advocates dealing with child behavior problems
through an innovative psychological approach that involves
neither drugging nor coercion.

Whoever wrote this article didn't do much homework. ADHD was not "recently
discovered." The complement of symptoms we now call ADHD was identified as
far back as 1920 after an epidemic of encephalitis in the UK. Hell, I was
diagnosed with it 30 years ago.

The reason "many more boys and girls are diagnosed" is that boys tend to get
more attention than girls because they are more likely to experience other
co-occurring disorders like Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant
Disorder with ADHD than girls. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

known and familiar, more and more people who have it will be identified.

Also, according to figures reported by the DOJ, the number of people
taking the meds that are prescribed for AD/HD and other conditions does
not come out to 6 million. Those figures include adults *and* children
and do not specify if the medication is prescribed for AD/HD or for
other reasons. IIRC, the figures indicate that the number of *children*
prescribed methylphenidate is less than 730,000. Please search the
archives at http://groups.google.com for previous discussions of these
figures.

forgive me for saying this, but just because you think you have this

people who swear they have met little green men, that doesn't mean

routinely dopeing kids is the way to go.
Its claimed that some kids suffer from hyper-activity, i'm sure
cannabis would help calm them down, but no body in their right mind
would condone giving cannabis to kids, yet many members of the group (
A.S.D.M ) think its o.k. for adults to use.
In the last hundred years or so people have tried all sorts of things
to control their kids, including E.C.T. and even lobotomies. Ritalin
is just the modern equivalent.
Ten years from now will we find the prescription of Ritalin for
behavioral problems in kids as distasteful as the use of E.C.T or
lobotomies ?

Methamphetamine is. They are two different substances entirely. But thank you

You might want to learn some organic chemistry. Would you say that
Sudafed is a methamphetamine? It is virtually identical. Ritalin is
quite a bit different.
BTW, you may speak of amphetamines, of which methamphetamine is one
(but not Ritalin), but you look stupid when you say "a
methamphetamine" as if there is more than one. Of course you could get
technical...there are 2 optical isomers of methamphetamine, and any

An intrepid photographer went to a haunted castle determined to get a

It's the Spring of 1957 and Bobby goes to pick up his date. He's a

As I said in another thread, Ritalin helped me as a child also. I
absolutely don't advocate medicating children who should not be medicated.
However, the decision to medicate should be an option available to parents
and doctors, should they, and no one but they, determine it is an
appropriate course of treatment for a child. NOT teachers and school
administrators, ONLY parents and physicians.

something with you. When I was a teenager I often stuttered when I was
trying to talk to a pretty girl that I liked. So you don't have to be

I'm wondering though, why you started. That is, what started it? See,
this would help us understand the inner Andrew, find out what forces
have molded you, etc... Did you have a father who you saw as cruel and
distant...who you were afraid of...who you so much wanted to please
but never seemed to be able to get his approval? That's my best
guess...how was it really?
Was your father a good man, do you believe? Did he seem to favor your
older brother, or did he treat him the same?
And I have often wondered how much older your older brother is than
you. Was he a man when you were still a boy, or just a couple of years
older? It really and truly is a terrible, horrible thing that he
molested you. I can certainly see how this has contributed to who you
are today. And how extreme was it? I'm trying to get at the degree of
trauma you suffered here. Did he fellate you, or sodomise you? Did you
have to do those things to him? And did he force you, or did you
aquiese? Both are traumatic in their own way. Some might be more hurt
to the core by the guilt they feel over aquiesence...complicity...this
is a common thing for victims of sex crimes, I think. It is a rape of
the mind as well as body.
So are you basically scared of other people? Is that why you rampage
on line, to compensate for the feelings of weakness in real life?
