1. Your wisdom teeth probably really do need to come out.
2. The removal of mine was one of the worse experiences of my life.
The horror stories you've heard are true.
3. A bad experience is not necessary
4. Absolutely insist on adequate General Anesthesia and post-op
pain control.
Final word of advice: do not accept vague ascertains of comfort.

Angela, I also had all four wisdom teeth removed (when I was 22). I demanded
to be put under (don't deal with dentist situations well at all), and was
accommodated. As a result the operation didn't hurt one bit. Afterward (when
the painkillers wore off) I was in considerable/pain discomfort and
completely incapacitated for 2-3 days, with lots of blood and gore, but I was
given excellent pain killers, and by staying in bed it wasn't as big a deal
as I was expecting. The trick is to hop yourself up with plenty of Lortabs
throughout the duration, and it'll get better soon enough. One thing, during
suregery the surgeon bumped a nerve that controlled the muscles which allow
me to open my mouth fully. As a result, for about 6-8 months afterwards, I
couldn't "open wide" buyt gradually this side effect of the surgery wore off.
Good luck!
