The news yesterday said that the drink 'SlimFast' causes gastro-intestinal
problems and might be pulled from the market. I was taking that when I
started with UC. I wonder if that was the way it all started with me?
Anybody else the same?
Thanks,
Al

I'm not sure exactly what sparked my Crohn's, but I did take Ibuprophen
for the first time ever sometime around that time, for a knee injury I
was having. I read in my doctor's book (Dr. Saibil) that it can cause
flare-ups... maybe I would never have had a flare-up at all without
this as a trigger?

Anyone have any opinions?

Hi Al,
Can you tell me where you saw that news article about Slim Fast,
because honestly I've suspected that's where my problems
started also.
Thanks,
Judy

John,

I took advil on and off for years before my CD really flared. Looking
back I know I've had mild CD symptoms for over 16 years and the CD
developed long after my intensive advil use for back strain.

I hope you feel better soon.

I always used to say I had "bad digestion", but I never really knew the
cause untill the flare-up. I really want to pin down what caused it to
go from mild symptoms to flare-up, but I guess nobody really knows
right now so I'll just have to wait.

While I wait, I will dedicate all my time to developing a titanium
colon... stay tuned! :-) (sigh... I wish...)

What you heard is that there is bad batch of SlimFast out there,
and it is being recalled. The product itself is not being
pulled from the market.

I tried Slim Fast recently and ended up having diarrhea after the first drink.
Needless to say I threw out the remaining five cans.

I was diagnosed with UC in '86. I am one of the UC sufferers who is not
plagued by diarrhea, but rather the opposite. When I used Slim Fast it
actually helped to keep me "regular" thanks to the 6 grams or so of fiber per
can.

In fact during the time when I was eating higher fiber and lower fat, with the
addition of a daily 2-4 mile walk I was in remission. Totally symptom free!

But, of course all IBD sufferers are different. My sister, who also has UC,
does not do well with fiber!

I didn't have any problems until I drunk slim fast for 3 weeks and after that
my syptoms started. I have mild crohns. I believe it had something to do with
it, I never had any syptoms at all until then.

Yes, Judy, it's on the web. I went to CNN news web page and input "slimfast"
in their search engine and you'll find the article.

Al

I have CD and of course have gone through the Prednisone
and losing weight deal about 6 times. Seems like Slim Fast
is the only way I can take off those last 15 pounds. But I
can't tolerate milk so the powder is out of the question
and the cans as well. Gosh wish I could drink it and if
didn't hurt so bad after drinking it maybe I could lose
this weight faster, but I'll have to do it the slow way.
About 4 years ago I successfully drunk it for about 3
months, but had been well for a long time. In the future I
plan not to try it for me its too risky. I did have a
sister in law drinking it and it caused her stomach
problems that she did not have before drinking it.
Personally I would not recommend it to people with stomach
problems at all.

It has milk in it, right? Why not drink Ensure? Dairy free. And more flavors.

Well one really bad thing about Ensure is the amount of processed sugar in
it...
Not what I would call a healthy drink!

I have been drinking slimfast for years and years and was just diagnosed with colitis. I believe it is the cause.

What form of colitis?

On it's own, "colitis" just means an inflamed or otherwise unwell gut,
if you have been diagnosed with *Ulcerative Colitis* or *Crohn's
Colitis*, the variations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease that can affect
the large intestine, you are in the right place.

I would be surprised that something like SlimFast would trigger UC, it
is the sort of food product that people with IBD are often directed to
use as it is easier for the gut to handle.

Is there anyone in your extended family with an autoimmune disease?
Crohn's Disease, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sclerosing Cholangitis,
and others are considered to be related to UC, often skipping
generations and showing up in distant relations while siblings show no
signs of any disease.

That said, if you have IBD then your gastro-enterologist will have an
opinion as to what is triggering your disease, talk to them first.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Gary B-)
