I've searched the web and have not found any answers. Is this something that
anyone recognizes? Is this bits of my intestine, or something else. I am
frightend by this as my father had his colon removed and wears a bag (sorry I
don't know the medical term).
I don't get diarehha <sp> more often than what would be considered normal. I
do have blood sometimes but the source of blood is likely very near the
rectum as I can feel a "rip" or "stinging" during the times it bleeds. the
blood is often heavy and is always "on" the stool instad of "in" it. I saw a
doctor about this and his suggested it was a crack. Probably more info than
you needed here but because I am frightened by this whole thing I figured I
throw in everything just in case a doctor-type reads this message.
To all those who took the time to read because you were looking to help, thank
you.

First I'm not a doctor <s>. I was dx at 16 with Ulcerative colitis (now 29).
Concerning the "material" on the toilet paper, I can say that I often find
food particles in my stools (or floating in the bowl). Especially carrots,
lettuce and apple skin. Maybe it's the same case with you.
Regarding your father, do you know why he had his colon removed? I don't
want to alarm you, but inflammatory bowel diseases - if indeed that's what
your father has - can be hereditary to a certain point. Concerning the "rip"
or "crack", did you doctor go and take a look, so to speak? Or did he only
said that it was one? Do you have abdominal pains? My opinion would be to
have the whole thing investigated. At least, you will know, much less
worries that way! Keep us posted!
Take care and best wishes,

The bits of material that you describe may well be tomato skins or remnants
of what ever food you ate. Popcorn skin and roughage like that may take a
while to come out, especially if your intestine is irregular and has many
folds in it. Sometimes the roughage "gets stuck" as it were. Or it could be
mucus "shreds" which in reality is bits of the intestinal wall- if your
intestine is inflamed and your body is working to heal it, the intestine
kind of uses mucus as a lubricant or acts kind of like a dressing in order
to protect the wall from acids or whatever in order for healing to occur.
Then eventually they break off and are passed through....I'm not a doctor,
but I was a nurse, and I am just speaking from my own experiences and how I
perceive your explanation, so they may not be medically correct. Get in
touch with your doctor and bring him a sample if you think it might help.
Also, if you feel like you're ripping, you may be irritating the bowel-you
might need to drink more fluids or have more fiber in your diet, or even a
stool softener to make things easier. Hope this helps. KimF.

The 'rip' you feel is probably the stool passing through bend in the
sigmoid colon, which is probably inflamed. It can also be the stool
passing an internal hemorhoid. (It takes ALOT to peel the skin off of your
colon insides, but not alot to pop a hemmorhoid... See a doctor for a
proper diagnosis.
