Just like most people who get UC, I was initially in denial about how much my life was going to have to change or what I needed to do to manage it. Just like so many others I tried many, many things. Each time I did I thought "if this doesn't work I don't know what I'll do". Of course some things certainly do help, but as most of us are aware fixing UC permanently is an uphill battle.

I make no claim of a cure, or even that it will help you because as far as I'm aware I am the only one to have tried this. I feel like I owe this, that because I'm able to enjoy life again that I have to do this. I've been in remission for more then a year now. I don't believe that I'm cured permanently, however I'm so much better then I've been in years that it's possible I may never have those symptoms again. Ironically I was at a pretty low point, you might even say I was desperate when I read about Light/Laser therapy.

First a little background about what light therapy is. There is a specific range of light, around 640 nm (although there are other ranges too), that when your cells are exposed to will actually promote healing. It's not science fiction. NASA and the United States military have done several scientific and medical studies available online that corroborate what I'm saying. Recently scientists have discovered that the amount of sun exposure a person has had plays a part in how likely a person will have UC (and Crohns), the less exposure you have the more likely you'll have UC. How LLT works is the mitochondria that live in your blood and tissue are attracted to the light and use it as a food source. After they've been fed, they go to work by helping to clean up your body of it's free radicals. It's a systemic reaction, meaning it will effect more then just the local area you've exposed to light.

Whether you use Laser or Light Emitting Diodes does not matter so long as it's within the 640 nm area of light and the light source is strong enough. In my case I used a laser, but the difference being that it may be more dangerous to use because of the depth the light will penetrate at. The reason this matters is because we have living bacteria in our bodies, micro-flora that we have a symbiotic relationship to. Without this bacteria we develop auto-immune related illnesses like Ulcerative Colitis (it's our genes that decide which illness we contract). Light KILLS bacteria, so you can very easily make yourself worse if you don't know what your doing.

**WARNING**: Read very carefully and make sure you understand BEFORE you proceed.

OK got that out of the way. Here it is in a nutshell. I didn't use LEDs so I've no idea how deeply they would penetrate. My assumption would be to take it easy & be just as cautious with your usage if you use an LED device. The area of coverage that I recommend is,

Hands, Arms, Back, Forehead, Ears ONLY. Occasionally you can do the Feet and Legs (nothing else), but not very often because the blood will be drawn to your lower extremities and cause hemorrhoid issues. Exposing your body to light in areas outside of what I've already mentioned can be dangerous, so don't say I didn't warn you.

Each area of the body you expose to light, you should limit to less then 4 seconds, then move on. More light in the same area that is longer then 4 seconds exposure time is NOT helpful, so don't do it. More different areas exposed to light means more mitochondria are activated, which is good. Absolutely DO NOT expose yourself to light in sensitive areas EVER (pelvic areas, stomach, eyes for example are very BAD). You WILL make yourself worse, I guarantee it. Use common sense. This regime should take less then 20-15 minutes max. You should do this ONCE every other day, any more then that will not be helpful. Before you proceed, you should have some form of eye protection, UV lenses. Super Sunnies tanning goggles are extremely cheap.

As for where to purchase a Laser or LED device? That's a tricky question. I've already stated that the source of light doesn't matter much, so I'd recommend buying an LED device as they are 'cheaper'. Vet Lasers work well too but tend to be pricier. It's up to you though so do the research. Remember: the ideal range is around 640nm.

I can't say for sure but if you do all this it may just help you the way it did me. The only thing I ask is that if you do benefit from doing this that you share this information with at least one other person. Obviously your free to do what you like, but I would be exceedingly grateful if it can help others. Sometimes all we need is just the right amount of help and UC can be debilitating in many ways.

The NASA studies I've read use LEDs at 660nm, not 640. The caveats you describe seem strange. I've not seen them elsewhere. And NASA uses LEDs on the outside of the face to treat inside the mouth. So yes, you don't need lasers for penetration.

Hi,
Thank you for the information but i have a question about the duration of time that the LED lights stays on the skin. Is it really 4 seconds ? how can so little time have any benefit to your system ? How can the 4 seconds intervals equal to 15 minute sessions? why is it then Near infrared lamps ( red lamps ) you can stay in front of them for 15 to 20 mins ?
Thank you for taking the time for answering me

According to Google Groups, Johnny hasn't posted since July 2012.

Have you tried emailing him?
