I recently started exercising to try and reduce stress and get my diarrhea
under control. I tried doing some situps hoping that strengthening my
abdominal muscles might aleviate some cramps, but I found that if I do 20
or more situps it triggers cramps and diarrhea. This sounds like it must
be related to my abdominal muslces. Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks,
Ed

I find exercising my calf muscles triggers cramps etc. It's strange. I
see a connection with abs, but calf muscles.

Yes Yes Yes

I have experienced this but was too embarassed to mention it. I attend a
stretch and strengthen class that ends with situps and I've had
to tear out of class more than once. --

Your problem is probably that sit-ups are too strenuous for an initial
abdominal exercise. You need to build up the gut muscles themselves
before you begin exercising the muscles around them. The best exercise
for this (believe it or not) is simple walking. Build yourself up to
being able to walk briskly with your tummy held in for at least a mile and
then try the sit-ups again

Yes, I'm another person who cannot do situps, abdominal crunches,
or similar for the effect it has on my gut. I've resolved myself
to a rolly-polly belly.

I agree with this, and also with the person who mentioned doing stretching
exercises. There's yoga program on our local PBS station which I find
extremely helpful for gentle toning. The instructor doesn't encourage the
use of sit-ups, but she teaches many other ab-strengthening exercises.
It's very rare for these slow, gentle exercises to send me running to the
bathroom. Interestingly, I'm experiencing what the teacher promises: that
the slow, gentle motions actually promote greater strength and endurance
than fast, strenuous ones do.

If Stretching for Life isn't on your local station, go to the library or
the video store to see about renting one of the tapes by Priscilla
Patrick. She's a very gentle soul -- over fifty, has several kids, and
she's gorgeous!!! Not glamorously so, but just really healthy and fit.
One of her tapes is called "Fit and Nifty Over Fifty." I forget what the
others are called. Take a look and see what you think!

Same problem--with ANY exercise. After surgery, I also have 2 hernias
which I've ried to treat with exercise (at drs's orders, in lieu of
insurance!) and te result is disasterous!

Hi Ed: Yes, this happens often. Any time you exercise the gut muscles
they are going to affect the intestine if there is already some "gut
grief" going on. I find that even doing a few (5!) sit ups causes more
"D" the next day. Ugh.

Here's the address; try again:

http://members.aol.com/HobbsHs/ibd/ibd.htm

Please note: the address used to be
http://members.aol.com/HobbsHs/IBD/ibd.htm (notice the all-caps in the IBD
directory). For various reasons, I changed it to all lower case.
However, both addresses should work for the time being.

Enjoy!
