Hi,

Can anyone define the surgical phrase "Fat Stranding" or "Mesenteric
Fat Stranding"? It's a phrase that's often used in association with
inflammatory processes in the bowel. It's a commonly used term but I
can't find a definition/explanation of it anywhere on the Internet. I
think it's also known as "fat streaking" or simply "dirty fat."

Thanks,

Jeekay

just "ask jeeves!".....lol:

sounds like a form of tissue picked up by the ct scan, among other things.
would be nice to see a pic of it.

Yes, it is a radiological sign they look for when there is inflammation. I
know that mesenteric refers to the mesentery, which is the outer membrane of
the intestines that holds it basically in place in the abdomen. I think it
is when the fat, which you have everywhere, is stretched into thin strands,
due to inflammation surrounding it and pushing it out of shape.??? I was a
medical transcriptionist and thats the best I can come up with....lol

I have recently been diagnosed with inflammatory stranding throughout the mesenteric fat and perirectal fat in the pelvis associated with the sigmoid colon. I was in the hospital for a week for infected diverticulitis. I feel like I can't breathe and like this fat is chocking me and also totally constipated. Anyone know what can be done for this? Seeing my g.i. tomorrow and have requested an M.R.I. Thanks. Ronda
