Dead newborn found at Orange County trash facility

(02-11) 18:20 PST STANTON, Calif. (AP) --
A newborn boy found wrapped in newspaper at an Orange County trash
transfer facility died of asphyxiation, officials said Wednesday.
An autopsy showed the baby, discovered Tuesday, died from lack of
oxygen, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's
Department.
The death was ruled a homicide, he said. Authorities did not release
the method of asphyxiation, he said.
The baby had its umbilical cord still attached and was discovered
around 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Material Recovery Center by workers
sorting recyclables from Orange and Los Angeles counties, authorities
said.
Determining which area the baby came from was difficult because the
plant treats trash from throughout the region, Amormino said.
Authorities don't know whether the baby died before or after he was
dumped in the trash, Amormino said.
A California law allows mothers to surrender newborns to a hospital
emergency room with no questions asked -- and no legal repercussions
-- within 72 hours of the baby's birth.
