SHOREHAM, N.Y. -- A Long Island teenager who set his family's parakeet
on fire during a New Year's Eve bash and posted photographs of the
torture on the Internet has been arrested, police said.
Timothy Guider, 18, of Shoreham, turned himself in on Saturday and was
charged with torturing an animal.
Guider threw the party while his parents were away, Suffolk County
police Sgt. Edward Aki said. After one of Guider's friends came up
with the idea of torching the parakeet, Aki said, Guider coated the
bird with hair spray and set it on fire, killing it.
Photographs of the bird being burned and a laughing Guider holding its
charred body were later posted on a Web site, police said.
Guider and his friends also took the dead bird to another party to
show it off, Aki said. One of the teens at that party told his parents
about the incident, and they told the Suffolk County Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which contacted police.
The charge against Guider is a misdemeanor under the agriculture and
markets law and is punishable by up to a year in jail.
Guider was released on bail and is due in court March 12. His home
telephone number was unlisted.
The Web site has been taken down.
Reason #7,874,846,399 why I don't have kids.
If I came home to find that my kid had done something
like that, I would head right back out the door, buy a
gun, go home again, and shoot the little bastard in the head.
Nevermind that his behavior is a marker for future harm against
humans. The brat is wasting valuable oxygen and that must stop.

That is terrible.
In other news, 500,000 male chicks were culled (usually by
suffocation) and ground up (sometimes still alive) into
fertilizer or animal feed today. No one was arrested.

"There is no place of permanence in the Universe, no golden
existence, no finish line. We live on the edge of chaos, with
all the turbulence that implies..." - Linda Nagata, "Vast"
WHY do you persist in this? Are you for some reason trying to distinguish
between "Animal cruelty/teen set parakeet on fire" and "Anima cruelty/cat
drowned" or "Animal cruelty/dogs found malnourished and sick"? I really
can't understand why it is so compelling to you to insistently include the
gory details right in the headers. Well, I can't understand your obvious
fascination with animal cruelty stories, anyway, but you sure to LOVE to
post 'em here, even when they having nothing whatsoever to do with childfree
issues. Surely even your compatriots who see an animal abuse post and think
"Ooh, COOL! Another animal abuse story--I can't wait!" can read the
individual posts IF THE WANT, or skip them IF THEY WANT, without having the
details "spoiled" in the header.
Please. If it is absolutely a necessary element of your very survival (as it
appears to be) to post those awful articles here, at least have a grain of
common courtesy not spare those of us the details who'd rather not see them.
Simply tagging "Animal abuse" does the trick.

Thank you, Kent.
I really enjoy some of your news finds, Elizabeth, and do not really want to
have to killfile all your posts for the sake of these ones that upset me so
much.

THANK YOU!!
While we grieve for the poor parakeet (and that bastard who killed it
ought to fucking FRY!) we need to remember the pain and suffering
endured by thousands, *millionsw* of other birds... chickens, turkeys,
ducks geese others, DAILY. Battery hens forced to lay daily with hormone
injections, colored contact lenses, forced lighting, in cages so small
their feet grow through and *into* the bars, so calcium deprived that,
were the cage tall enough for them to stand, their legs simply *break*
under them! Their lives end after a year or two of continual egg
production and the birds become Chicken McNuggets.
An indian once told me "The reason the white man likes squares, square
buildings, steet blocks, fences, cars, is because you become what you
eat. The white man eats slavemeat. Every animal raised in pens, fed
chemicals, dead in spirit, creates the same kind of human being! Look at
your society and tell me the difference between your cows in cages and
your workers in office buildings... your pigs running in chutes and your
cars on the freeways. The reason the Indian is confined on reservations,
living in poverty is because that is what the Wasichu has done to the
wild! Shut it away, taken the best part of it and left the rest to
languish. If we eat, that is what we eat... or the white man's diet...
Consider it."
