Hi

Regarding this breaking news:
"Bugs pinpointed as cause of IBS" (17-May-2011)

If an on-going infection by "bugs" (i.e. bacteria) is the cause of
IBS, is the cure to IBS a heavy dose of the relevant anti-biotic?
(e.g. penicillin?)

I don't particularly want to hear about other cures for IBS (e.g. Mint
oil/Aloe Vera/slippery elm/dietary changes (like avoiding dairy,
gluten &sugars etc)...
my question is that if we KNOW that IBS really is caused by bacteria
in the small intestine, then surely the cure is to kill off the
infection.

If so which anti-biotics and in what doses should we be taking?

Any thoughts?

There isn't any actual news there, just a statement that isn't
backed up by the name of a single peer-reviewed study.

BTW, here's what a real breaking news story looks like:
"Gluten Contributes to Irritable Bowel Syndrome Even in Non-
Celiacs" (18-May-2011)
http://www.celiac.com/articles/22554/1/Gluten-Contributes-to-
Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome-Even-in-Non-Celiacs/Page1.html

Note the link to the study at the end.

I'm no expert - and no (sorry to disappoint Josephi) I am not in the
pockets/payroll of any pharmaceuticals.
As far as I can see the research that WDDTY was talking about (a VERY
anti pharmaceutical site, btw!) is this:
The study in question was published in the Jan. 6 issue of the New
England Journal of Medicine.
http://tinyurl.com/6avpcd5
...which I presume was peer reviewed, no?

So please can we all stay calm and focus on the facts.
Personally I have a VERY long history of ME/IBS and over the years
having tried most alternative therapies going I am willing to try
pretty well anything - yes even the fruits of the 'evil'
pharmaceuticals - if there is a rational case for doing so.

That is subject to peer review, yes. The original article should
have included the citation.

Let's.

The study indicates that only 40% resonded to the treatment,
which is a long way from showing that they've found the definite
source of the problem. It opens an avenue to be researched, to be
sure.

But since I have celiac disease, not IBS, it means bugger-all to
me.

Otherwise, I'd be monitoring alt.support.ibs instead of
alt.support.celiac

Afternoon very favorable for romance. Try a single person for a

The cause of the "disorder" needs to be treated.

If I treated a symptom of my celiac disease I may be comfortable while I
develop bowel cancer or Crohn's , at least.
Of course when you treat a symptom it doesn't have any lasting effects
towards a cure.

Well said, Chris
