I have PN with tingling in both my hands and feet. I am undergoing
chemo to get rid of cancer of the lymph nodes. Now, I'm also diabetic,
type 2. and it's a fair bet that it's diabetes that's causing peripheral
neuropathy. I also know that chemo can mimic the effects that diabetes
does. What to do?

Cheers,

I have CLL and type 2 Diabetes. I also have these tingling problems in my
leg. My consultant tells me that it is certainly due to the diabetes and to
just watch my diet. It will probably take 18 months to go away. No treatment
possible.

I finished chemo in Dec '06, and PN is about the only remaining effect
aside from being above ground so long. Most of the time, I feel
normal, but sometimes I have numbness or even tingling in the hands
and/or feet. I don't think there's anything you can do about it. My
onc said it should go away over time, though sometimes it doesn't.
Chemo does a lot of damage to nerve cells, and it can take them a
while to recover. I can't speak to the diabetes part of it. Good
luck on the cancer treatment. For some (I hope we're both in this
group), cancer becomes just a somewhat unpleasant memory. Plan to
wave to it in the rearview mirror, and don't use too many fingers.

I think there's someone on a.s.diabetes who also has CLL & T2, you could ask
there. I *know* that I've seen lots of reports from various T2's of
improvement in PN with long-term good blood glucose control -- and your
consultant's definition of "good control" may not be as strict, and how to
"watch your diet" may not be as effective or specific as those people have
actually had success with.
