I watched part of a documentry about James/Lauren Harries on C4 last
night. Pity I did not see it all. IMHO Lauren Harries is a clear case
of Asperger Syndrome.

James Harries, as the short bio describes, was a eccentric child who's
obsession was antiques. He appeared on TV many times in the 80's
talking about antiques, just like an adult. His accent was
upper-class, very posh, he was in-fact from a working class area of
Wales. He wore a bow tie and suit. I have no doubt, as a child, I
could have talked as much about minerals as James talked about
antiques. But I have not and do not intend to have a sex change, thank
you.

Anyway James was in IMHO a gifted AS child. It in retrospect its very
obvious indeed. I know that asexually, confusedness, gay and
bi-sexuality is common in autism and Lauren seems typical.

Anyway in the documentary...James, now Lauren after a sex change, had
a terrible time, she was the object of ridicule and oddness...just
like when younger.

James/Lauren Harries

James Harries was a prodigy. At the age of 14 he published a book,
Rags To Riches, which explained how to make money from jumble sales.
His appearance was unusual - he wore a bow tie, had a mop of golden
hair and spoke with the poshest accent any Cardiffian has ever
uttered. He turned up on numerous chat shows where to all intents and
purposes he was paraded as a freak. After dropping out of the
limelight for many years James recently reappeared - to tabloid glee -
as....Lauren. The prodigy had undergone a sex-change operation. Lauren
is currently attempting to resurrect her career on the celeb circuit.

From somewhere on the net.

It certainly is a pity you didn't see it all because if you had you
would realise a lot of the things you are saying are not true.

His parents dressed him up in that way and rehearsed the accent so he'd
get on TV.

But it was revealed on the documentary that he had (and she has) almost
no real knowledge of antiques and it was all a sham.

What was his gift? It wasn't antiques, because he didn't really know
anything about them.

That was because of the very isolating behaviour of her family. It's
obvious to me that if you take a council house and mock-tudorise it,
then act as if you are very much above all your neighbours it will
generate bad feeling in the local community. Especially if it's a
council estate.

You seem to have been watching a very different programme to me because
from what I saw they came out in a very bad light. Most of the family
including Lauren have fake PhDs in "metaphysics" which they bought off
an American internet site. They have also awarded themselves degrees
from a university based in their house. Using these fake
qualifications, they run a counselling service. Lauren's (unqualified)
mother actually counselled her as part of the required counselling a
person must undergo before have a sex change operation. Lauren has
another fake PhD in "dramaturgy" and it showed her teaching a "drama
lesson" which ended with her becoming very confused and aggressive.

It is perhaps possible she has AS, but it seems clear to me that there
are other, much more serious mental health issues in that family.

I suspect you're less like him/her than you think.

Well anyway, that's what happens when you see only half a documentary.
Well the last 10-15 minutes. I retract all I said. I hope there is a
repeat of the program. I was misled!

I looked up James Harries book, Rags To Riches, allegedly written when
14, on my college library website. Its a copyright library and holds
every book published in Ireland and the UK since 19th century or
something. His book is not in the Library, which indicates it does not
exist. I also checked ISBN, if it does exist it does not have an ISBN
number.

From what little I saw, I thought the family set up their "university"
after pretending to be as clever as James/Lauren. So the whole thing
was fake! Wow. I wonder if they will take James/Lauren's picture off
the BBC gifted website, now he is found out.

Yes they are eccentric all right, but then it takes some different kind of
madness to drive my landrover, which in terms of the mock tudor council
house analaogy is like living in a stockbroker belt semi after someone has
shelled it.

Incedently I am tempted to get my self ordained on the internet, it would be
more authentic than the Church of England anyway :)
