Ritalin Unknowns
Linda James Speaks!! - Ritalin “Unknowns!”
Anyone interested in knowing some of the short and long-term side
effects
of Ritalin can walk into any public library and look it up in the
Physician's
Desk Reference. The scariest fact is that many of the long term
effects of
this drug have “not yet been established.” It is amazing that as many
as
two and a half million kids are taking a drug that adults would be put
in
jail for abusing. Ritalin is Speed!!! Too often, doctors are quick
to
pump toxins into sick bodies to numb symptoms, rather than fix
problems.
If you have a child diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, and are interested in

Dr. Richard X. Frager responds:
You are 100% right, Linda. Not only is it very scary, considering the
unknown long-term
health risks, but the short-term benefits are far from certain. Great
information and
of course, superb references!
Let's listen in to James Gordon, M.D., Director of the Center for Mind-
Body Medicine in
Washington, D.C. He unquestionably condemns the widespread use of
Ritalin as part of
”an unnecessary medicalization of the human experience” and recommends
the drug only as
a last resort. “I'm very concerned that we rush to give a drug
instead of looking at
the social context and what the family and kids can do for themselves.
The first and
most obvious thing you have to do is look at the whole family and see
how the family
interacts. There are lots of steps that can be tried: Many kids do
have food
allergies, and if you remove certain foods they get quieter. I
prescribe a tremendous
amount of physical exercise for these kids. sometimes self-hypnosis
works-you can
teach a child to have an imaginary friend he can call on to help calm
him down.”
Speaking about the “Textbook of Pharmacotherapy” - the three physician
authors of the
book emphasize that “in the field of child psychiatry, and in
psychiatry in general, the
use of stimulant medications is not considered controversial. These
medications are
solid, first-line, bread-and-butter-type medications with a remarkable
benign
side-effect profile.” Although many parents have trouble accepting
those dangerous
conclusions. People like yourself, Linda, have valid objections with
the continuing
widespread use of a mind-altering drug!
