This is another commercialized site with no real actual information on what
an asthmatic can do to get better (other than send money for more
information). There are plenty of legitimate breathing techniques that were
around long before Mr. Buteyko ever drew his first breath and I bet that he
owes them a lot of credit.
After looking at a lot of so-called "information" on buteyko (this site and
others), I still have no idea was Buteyko is beyond a breathing technique
that can't be learned until one has pulled out one's Visa card. Is this
really a body of knowledge that has helped people, or just another pyramid
scheme?
Pranayama (the breathing part of Yoga) and the Alexander Technique have
helped me a lot. What's different about them is that the people who teach
them are very free and open about with their knowledge and what their
technique involves, they do demonstrations in bookstores, free lectures, etc.
and if you do pay them for lessons, they are usually reasonably priced.
Whereas Mr. Buteyko treats his technique as proprietory knowledge. This
would make me assume that there is actually very little to it.
I not saying that Buteyko does not work, but that it seems so commercialized
and secretive, that it appears unlikely there is much to it.
I haven't read the Paul Servino book, but highly recommend "The Breathing
Book" by Donna Fahri.
Yes, but you might be able to find it at the library. Many these days will put
out a search at other libraries in their system if they don't have it. Cheaper
that way, too.

Here are a couple of up-to-date books on the subject, written by
physicians. Richard Firshein, DO, heads the Sorvino Institute.
They both discuss 'diaphragmatic' breathing, etc.

No. Buteyko is not the same.

Because Buteyko breathing technique is quite hard to learn from print. It is
much easier face to face.
The site http://www.wt.com.au/~pkolb/buteyko.htm contains enough information
to enable you to get started with the Buteyko breathing technique. Follow
the links 'Get Started Now' and then 'Janet and Anne'. I also found the help
provided by the Support Group mailing list (follow the 'Support' link from
the first page) invaluable. They helped with a number of difficulties I
experienced at first, including how to do CPs MPs and VSB correctly. I have
used Buteyko successfully for the last 15 months.

In other words: "we are in this for the money."

And lots of deliberate misinformation designed to mislead you into
thinking that the technique has a scientific basis.
