I have been on Proventil for many, many years. Since it is hard to come by my
doctor is switching me to a different inhaler. I am trying Serevent. This is
the second day, but I do not get the relief I have with the Proventil Inhaler.
How does Serevent work for others? What about Flovent? Is Flovent better?

Thank you for your time!

My advice is to switch to a different doctor. Serevent is a long
duration bronchodilator that can take an hour to have effect.

It is _not_ intended for the quick relief of acute asthma symptoms!

Proventil is albuterol; albuterol is the drug of choice for
'rescue' and to be used as needed; available as Ventolin
or in generic form. It's not hard to come by, any drugstore
should have it--requires a prescription.

However if you need to use albuterol more often than once
per day, the addition of other asthma drugs is needed.
This includes an inhaled steroid [Pulmicort, Flovent]
and Serevent. You will still need the albuterol inhaler
for quick relief [takes effect in 5 min]

It's not recommended that Serevent be used without also
prescribing a steroid inhaler. Serevent is slow acting
and should not be used for quick relief. I suggest consulting
a doctor who knows more about asthma.

You said you were on a proventil inhaler which is a short acting
beta-agonist (rescue inhaler). You should get a generic form of
proventil which is called albuterol.

Every asthmatic needs a rescue inhaler.
Which can be used every 4-6 hours.

Serevent is a long acting bronchidalitor (lasting 12 hrs and used only
every 12 hrs), while albuterol is short acting.

Flovent is a corticosteriod inhaler and is used for preventing attacks
by keeping inflammation in the bronchi down.

Hope this info is helpful.

Dana

P.S. If you were using your proventil inhaler several times a day before
you should look into Advair ( a new drug which combines Flovent and
Serevent into a Diskus)
