Hello everyone,
Due to kidney problems, I'm going to have to stay away from NSAIDs. I
saw a nephrologist and he thinks there's a good possibility I have a
kidney disease called IgA nephropathy, but hopefully my problems are
due to longterm use of Celebrex. No matter which is the problem, I
can not ever take NSAIDs again and have to be very careful with
prednisone.

On the recommendation of my nephrologist, I've been researching IgA
nephropathy and have found a great support group. Many of them, maybe
even most of them are taking fish oil to prevent or help with the
inflamation in the kidneys. I know that some people use it for
arthritic inflamation and thought maybe someone here may have had some
experience with it.

If you can give me any advice or info, I would really appreciate it!
My RA has been pretty calm lately, but I do notice the lack of an
NSAID.

I hope you're all doing well and everyone's having a great summer! : )

You should use one of the brands that is molecular distilled, Jarrow has one for instance probably other brands
as well.
Ocean fish is not too pure anymore and farm raised does not have the EFA's your looking for. Molecular
distilled fish oil should be safe to consume on a daily basis. It is certainly worth a try Carol. I take Flax oil,
couple tablespoons a day plus a couple tablespoons of ground flax seeds for my omega 3's. Sure makes the
hair in my ears grow like crazy!

Kate - There is a cod liver oil made by GNC that has peppermint oil added to
it so it doesn't cause the tummy problems. I order it from DrugStore.com
because the local stores do not even seem to know it a product that they can
carry. Maybe you could try this one.

Regarding the stomach problems, I wonder if quercetin supplements would
be better. According to Dr. Weil, quercetin is anti-inflammatory and
helps IBS.

Gary, I wonder if the hair growth is related to the lignans in the flax
seed. Lignans contain phytoestrogens.

Here's a Q&A at Dr. Weil's site on flax.

In 1996, I ripped a muscle or something in my thigh from overuse
(lifting dozens of large garbage bags full of wet leaves in the fall).
It burned and was incredibly painful. My doctor gave me some sort of
anti-inflammatory. Unfortunately, I don't remember what it was called. I
took it for about a week. While it helped a good deal, my thigh still
hurt some.

After the prescription was used up, the pain came back and I decided to
try an omega-3 supplement which happened to be Lifeplus's green-lipped
mussel product. I'm by no means advocating Lifeplus, as I'm no longer
buying from them anyway and you can probably get it from some other
vendor, but that's what I happened to use at the time. Green-lipped
mussels supposedly have higher concentrations of the omega-3 fatty acids
in them.

The instructions on the container said to take something like 7 caps a
day for the first week and then reduce it to something like 2 a day
after that. Well, I tell you when I was taking the higher, introductory
dosage, I felt no pain or discomfort in my thigh whatsoever! It was
amazing! Those green-lipped mussels really worked! Then when I went to 2
a day, the discomfort came back, but it did seem to help reduce the
pain. I never went back to the higher dose, because I was concerned
about ODing on the stuff.

Here's what Dr. Weil says about omega-3's, if you are interested.

hi diane, thank you for the suggestion. please forgive me for being so
crude, but if you burp it, does it still taste and get up your nose like cod
liver oil but with a hint of peppermint? or is it more like peppermint with
a hint of cod liver oil? or does the peppermint mask the cod liver oil
totally? fish oils make me so very nauseous.

hi marilyn---thank you for this. i dunno what IBS is though. oh, maybe i
do--irritable bowel syndrome? i don't generally have stomach problems and
don't think i have ibs. (at least, i haven't been diagnosed with it, at
this point) but there is something consistantly unpleasant going on with
fish oils and my body whenever i ingest them.

i went to the web site you provided and realized that i am taking
bioflavonoids (carlson's) though not quercetin (i think). mine seem to be
lemon based, with plant cellulose, rose hips concentrate, stearic acid and
magnesium stearate. now, i'm wondering if those are even worth taking.

there is soooo much information out there that i sometimes feel overwhelmed
by it all. the more i get into it, the more confused i become, to be honest
with you. so, are you saying that quercetin is a substitute for fish oils
and/or flax seed oil? i couldn't get that info from the article on
quercetin. or are you saying quercetin would be a good additional thing to
take with fish oils?

Kate,
I take both. I take flax seed oil in the morning mixed with yogurt as per the
bidwig diet posted on the anitibiotic therapy list. I'm going to send you that
link in an e-mail but supposedly yogurt and cottage cheese inhance the flax
seed oil. I also take fish oil molecularly distilled (I like Jarro and tyler
for best brands that have absolutly no fish oil smell.

I was a premie baby with lung stuff all through my first year of life. When I
was two my grandmother started the old codliver oil stuff with me and every
morning I had to take cod liver oil and orange juice (to this day I won't drink
orange juice). Good fish oil just has absolutely no taste or smell. There are
things in the fish oil you don't get in flax seed oil and certainly the reverse
is true. However, if you're trying to do a ratio thing like in the zone diet,
either works fine.

i'd do both, if both had different properties that were beneficial in and of

Kate, I'd say flax oil is a good substitute for fish oil, if it's just
the taste and smell that bother you.

I don't exactly think that quercetin would be a good substitute for
omega-3, but it apparently does have anti-inflammatory qualities, if
that's something you're looking for.

Try this site for drugstore.com. At the bottom of the page is the list of
the ingredients. They make one with peppermint and one without. I find
that the local store hire teenagers that are clueless and don't even
realize they sell the one with peppermint. After many frustrating trips to
different GNC's I just started ordering it online. So make sure you check
the ingredients if you buy it in the store and if they tell you they don't
make it....don't believe them! Good luck.

Thanks Mark...this is very interesting because people with kidney
disease usually have high bp problems caused by the kidney problems.
I could use some help with my bp which fluctuates. I'm glad it's

I tried fish oil for a while with my RA but it made me burp and I had this
yucky fish taste. The health food store suggested I switch to flax, which
tastes better. You can use it like olive oil. The Omega oils are extremely
beneficial and reduces inflammation so I hope it helps to replace your
NSAIDS. If the fish oil is yucky you might try flax. -- MZ

Both are sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Susan and I, and I believe Harv,
too, take the Flax Oil to help control cholesterol. Susan and I also take
Garlic capsules as they are good for the heart. Susan's PCM noticed a great
improvement in her cholesterol readings in just three months after she

Hi Larry, I used to take flax when I needed to do something about a
reading on my blood tests. Just like I used to take milk thistle for an
elevated liver reading. I do not take either one now but you let one of
those blood tests show something again and you watch me fly down to the
vit-store.
I know that you have multiple problems to deal with each day that
would crush most of us but there is nothing wrong with your mind. It
has been several years since I talked about taking flax seed oil. I
wish I could do that but like most things in life, wishing does not make
it so. There are so many gaps in my memories. Whole years are gone.
Ya know, I have four kids that are all on their own and doing better
than their mom and dad in many ways and when they get together to talk
about old times and things that took place at one time or another. I
might as well take my hearing aid out because the nodding my head and
the smile is the same one used when I am missing the discussion but I am
missing the memory.
Blood tests are so important for a person to do something about one
of the readings that is a little out of whack. Just like when we go to
our RDs for an appointment. The doctor listens to our ticker, the air
flow in our lungs, feels the heat in our joints, listens to our
complaints, looks for signs of side effects from the medicine we take
and sometimes says nothing about any of it to us. Just makes notes in
that all important file and I feel better because it was done.
