HELP!!
Is there ANY correlation between prednisone therapy for RA and yeast infection?
I have never in my life been so plagued!! (eeww)
I have had to use Monistat 7 at least 3-4 times in the past 6 months.
Will this tendency go away once I can taper off the pred?
(my Rheum hopes within 3 months....)

Hi Teresa!

Yep, whenever I am on higher doses of prednisone or have just finished
antibiotics, I always get yeast infections. Because of this, I have a
standing order for Diflucan with several refills. It works really well
for me. I often get yeast infections that involve my mouth, my skin,
and the vaginal area, and the Diflucan usually clears all of it within
24 hours. Hopefully when you get off the prednisone, you will see a
drastic reduction in the amount of yeast infections you get. Good luck
to you!!!

I know that the use of hydrocortisone creams or ointments on genital
psoriasis can lead to a yeast infection in very short time. It's been the
only thing that has ever caused them in me. So I find it quite believeable
that systemic steroids could also cause yeast infections.

I hope you can get off it fairly soon!

Yes they can be related.
Prednisone lowers your immune system and that can allow the yeast to "set up
shop".
Hope you can find relief. Have you tried taking acidophilus? Eating
yogurts w/live cultures?

I have to wonder how effective that would be. The bacteria in those
yogurts are supposed to stay in the intestine. You do not want bacteria
floating around and multiplying in your blood, and the blood is the only
way for the bacteria to reach the destination. Unless, of course, you're
very uncoordinated at wiping after a bowel movement, but the other
bacteria associated with that will present far greater problems...

Yes, and not just for women. Steroids are well known for allowing
fungal infections to proliferate.

I use Diflucan once a week to keep my chronic yeast infection at bay.
The infection is in my sinuses, but spreads quickly if I miss a dose.
Steroid inhaler use is suspected as the reason this started.

If this persists, see an infectious disease doc. I doubt your current
therapy is adequate.

Steroids also tend to raise blood sugars which allows yeast to thrive.

I have a standing diflucan RX to take as needed. I'd call your doc and quit
messing with monostat.

Be careful with the Diflucan. I've heard and read some pretty nasty
stories. But living w/a chronic yeast infection isn't pretty either.
Take care

My father in law took it and he had to have a liver panel done every week.
It interacts with a lot of medications so that is one area you have to
watch. It's also really hard on your liver and kidneys.
Can make your eyes more sensitive while using the medication. Etc

I would really try the probiotics before taking Diflucan. I take too many
other meds..... but I can understand the pain of a yeast infection. During
my staph infection, I had yeast in the bends of both legs, at the hip area.
I was itching like mad! I started loading up on the Acidophilus and using
Lamisil... it's slowly getting better.
If it's a vaginal yeast infection, there are several things that can be done
to help decrease the likelihood of getting one... but if all that's done,
Diflucan may be the only answer.

Debbie,

Diflucan is a pill that you usually only have to take one of and it
clears things up. Sometimes it is necessary to take a second or even a
third pill, but I have never had to take more than 3 pills. Usually
you take one pill, wait for 2-3 days and if things haven't
improved/cleared up, then you take the second pill. This of course
assumes that you don't have a problem with chronic yeast that is
difficult to get rid of. I usually always get a major outbreak of
yeast after I have been in the hospital and have had major IV steroids
along with major antibiotics. I most of the time then develop yeast
infections in my mouth, on my thighs and torso area, and in the vaginal
area. I have a standing order for Diflucan and usually take 1 pill and
all of the yeast infections clear up. If it is a particularly bad
outbreak of yeast, I may have to take a second or third pill, but that
us pretty rare for me. My doctor gives me a new standing order for
the dicflucan each january and the way he rx it for me is 3-4 pills with
4 refills. That is usually more than enough to get me through the
year. It can be harsh on your system if you are taking it all the
time, but since I only take it once in a great while, I have never had
any problems with it and it usually clears things up within 24 hours and
sure beats messing around with all those creams and powders!

One thing that's occurred to me that I feel should be mentioned is that
you can get thrush infections of the mouth and throat as Walter has
already mentioned, but you can also get them in the oesophagus. So, if
you're prone to getting them, be aware that some chronic chest
pain/indigestion/heart burn can be a fungal infection. The treatment
isn't so bad: fruit flavored sucking candies impregnated with
amphotericin B or some such :)

Hi krissy,
I called my Ob gyn and she is calling me back-I am sure they will prescribe the
diflucan, because I may have months of prednisone therapy ahead of me.
I told the nurse I feel like I should own stock in the company that produces
monistat!
Thanks for the tip!
