Firstly what are peoples experiences of eating canabis for pain relief, I
have smoked it and had some benifishial effects, but as I only have a 1cm
chest expansion I can't smoke long term. Also whats it like with alcochol? I
ask because my pain releif doc suggested 2-4 pints of beer and a joint as
the best alternative to NSAIDs.

I going into hospital tommorow to try and get something sorted, but I wan't
as much info as posbile if they can't do anything other than Opiates (pain
killers, Morphine ect.)

Thanks

The value of any tool is determined to some extent by the
appropriateness of its use. (A hammer makes a poor screwdriver,
etc). Research I've seen suggests that cannabis might be a valid
competitor in acute anti-nausea applications. It might also be a
runner-up in anti-inflamatory applications, especially for neural
afflictions. It just isn't particularly impressive as a pain medication.
There are lots of alternatives which are stronger or better in other
criteria.

??? If I were you I'd look for a new doctor.

Depending on your condition, those things might be appropriate,
although as you've figured out, pot smoking isn't really a viable
medical procedure.

I'm not sure what the political climate is in the UK these days,
but here in the states it's starting to look a lot more like doctor-
patient privilege isn't always going to be enough to protect doctors
who talk about MJ with their patients from federal prosecution.
In some cases even broaching the subject might amount to
conspiracy to commit a felony.

Hi Cris,
I'll refrain from discussing cannibis as a treatment as it has a tendancy to
make me tremendously more stupid than I already am. :-)
I do find alcohol effective as a pain reliever for mild pain. Doesn't do a
whole lot for strong pain though. I am better off with pain killers for
those. Got to be careful though, you can't mix the two without causing worse
problems. They are both hard on your liver. The doc told me I shouldn't have
a drink within 6 hrs after taking a pain med (which are supposed to be only
good for 4 hrs. of relief.)

The use of marijuana for medical purposes and moreover arthritis specifically
is a very controversal subject.
We do have a section devoted to the subject at:

If I'm not mistaken, the US Supreme Court is about to consider a case
regarding the legality of medical use of marijuana.

As you know several states have legalized medical marijuana and there are
canabis buyers' clubs for those who have an Rx for its use. However,
*federal law* makes its use illegal for any purpose.

Enter: The Supremes! Congress outlawed it, trained scientists that they
are ;-) and now the Supremes will take testimony from medical experts and
other scientists and hear (hopefully) about the other canabinoids in the
natural herb other than Delta-9 THC. This will be very interesting.

Yes they are, here is an article about it from our medical marijuana section.

I'm not opposed to the extraction of naturally occurring
therapeutic substances. To the extent that there is any
medical value in MJ I believe we have a moral obligation to
find out what that is and package it as a real medicine.
I just don't see how any number of medical experts are
going to be able to make the case that we should embrace
pot smoking as a medical procedure over the long term.

I would far prefer to see the humanitarian concern
addressed in the short term through a temporary executive
amnesty to keep patients from clogging the courts, and
preserve at least some semblence of a unified front against
"recreational" drug use.

I confess I'm intrigued by the case myself. The
Supreme Court actually has a lot of thought-provoking
cases on the docket this year. I've been hoping to hear
more about the ADA case vs the state of Alabama as well.

It works. Take a quarter pound (0.125kg) of margerine or butter, put
it in a small pan, add about 1/4oz canabis. Saute until the maragrine
boils. Be careful not to burn it. Simmer about 15 minutes. Strain the
mixture. Discard the now depleted residue in the strainer. Use a
teaspoon of that "margarine" in a batch of Brownies or Cookies. Start
with a 1" square of Brownie or 1/2 a cookie until you find out just how
powerful that "margarine" is. Don't want to do as I did on my first
effort. Ate a 2 and 1/2 inch square brownie. Sat at the kitchen table
admiring the fridgy magnets for about 4 hours after which time I was
really hungry but did not eat another brownie that day. LOL

> Also whats it like with alcochol?

One or two beer or a glass of wine will be alright. Won't improve on
the brownies but it will be good for your heart.

Best,
Larry

LOL Larry, why bother filtering it through butter? We used to put it straight
into the brownie mixture in my salad days.

I am hoping the media will give it complete and fair coverage.
Including the historical reason why marijuana/hemp have been outlawed.
I hope there is a nice hot place in hell that is slowly and painfully
roasting William Randolph Hurst as well as the politicians he purchased
when he wanted hemp outlawed. If you are held to be credible by
certain families in the southern and central Appalachian area you might
be entrusted with some very interesting "good, old-fashioned, down
home" remedies. Was the kindly old grandmother of a Sergeant First
Class friend of mine in Eastern Tennessee who taught me to exract
canabis sativa by steeping it in butter/margarine and using that
extract in baking.

History lesson: Congress outlawed hemp and associated products
at the urging of a well-known publishing family which owned vast
forests (and other lumbering companies) which were fearful that
their hierachies would fall if use of hemp fibers to manufacture
paper (newsprint) increased. The real purpose of the law was not
to outlaw MJ, but to crush a legit business that threatened another
rich, powerful, lobbying group.

The "evil" effects of Cannabis/MJ was the flimsly excuse Congress
used to pass that law.

My stomach is not what it was during my salad days. Neither is my
anus. A few sharp stems could play hell down there. Especially if
they were near the top of the brownie and nicely roasted. LOL

Larry-
Thanks for the recipe, might come in handy one day.  I made "hash browns" many times in my youth but never heard the sautéed butter trick.  We just baked the hash into the brownies and choked them down.

My RD has been dropping subtle hints about using marijuana to control the nausea, improve my appetite (I eat about one meal every 3-4 days), reduce the pain, and help me sleep w/o Ambien - but Florida has become such a Nazi state when it comes to drugs....they love to confiscate cars, houses, etc. .... that I'm unwilling to risk it for my family's sake.  I can just see it..."Hi honey, I got busted and they took the car.  Can you walk to work?"

Besides, when I was 17, 18 years old I could score dope with a single phone call. But at 36 I don't know anyone who gets high...I'm sure I do, but I'm unaware of it.  It would be much easier if I could just get an rx refilled.

I tried some stuff off the internet - advertised as legal herbal equivalents of pot and hash - and the price wasn't too bad, but they are very mild and not very effective. A mild buzz that lasted about an hour....not effective as a treatment.
