On a BA flight from Johannesburg, a middle-aged, well-off white South
African Lady has found herself sitting next to a black man. She called the
cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating.

"What seems to be the problem Madam?" asked the attendant.

"Can't you see?" she said, " You've sat me next to a kafir. I can't possibly
sit next to this disgusting human. Find me another seat!"

"Please calm down, Madam." the stewardess replied. "The flight is very full
today, but I'll tell you what I'll do - I'll go and check to see if we have
any seats available in club or first class."

The woman cocks a snooty look at the outraged black man beside her (not to
mention many of the surrounding passengers).

A few minutes later the stewardess returns with the good news, which she
delivers to the lady, who cannot help but look at the people around her with
a smug and self-satisfied grin:

"Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I've spoken to the
cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one seat
in first class."

Before the lady has a chance to answer, the stewardess continues...

"It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, and I have
had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the
circumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someone should
be forced to sit next such an obnoxious person."

Having said that, the stewardess turned to the black man sitting next to the
lady, and said:

"So if you'd like to get your things, sir, I have your seat ready for
you..."

At which point, apparently the surrounding passengers stood and gave a
standing ovation while the black man was escorted up to the front of the
plane.

If only a story like this could be true... some people need a lesson such as
this to knock them off of their high and mighty.

Has anyone been watching the happenings in Toledo this afternoon? Ironic
that the Nazi's did not get their parade off to make their statement, but
all of the people who were insulted by the showing of said Nazis are burning
their own buildings down and looting their own stores.....

I think my Irony Meter just blew a fuse.....

While doubtless the intent behind this charming tale is
well-meaning, I have to wonder...

a/ What the **** has the content to do with arthritis, given
that it was not a follow-up to a thread where it may be
relevent?

b/ Are you in any way aware the you could cause upset with
this post, no matter what you think about the subject
matter? (If you need this question explaining, ask me.)

Like I said, just wondering...

mike, in gwen's defense, she listed the post as OTP (off topic post),
which we do all the time.

Mike, tell your brain that if a post has OTP on it, it does not pertain to
arthritis and you don't have to read it!

I'd like to second the recommendation for "Crash", it's a very thought
provoking movie. Also it's good to see Gwen posting humourous OTP posts
again. Remember Mike, laughter is the best medicine.

True, but then again, Gwen doesn't need defending as I'm not
attacking her, just asking what I considered to be relevent
questions regarding what appears to me to be a post some
could find disturbing.

As I've stripped loads of things out of this particular
installation of VectorLinux, you'll excuse me not sampling
these delights I'm sure. ;)

You wanna get into a WinDOHs-v-Linux tussle?
Just ask... :)

Gwen, while I understand the function of OT, I felt that
this was sooooooooo far OT I mentioned it. There have been
times I've been nudged for woffling on about how folks could
avoid all those nasty virus by switching to Linux, because
its got NOTHING to do with Arthritis, in any way whatsoever.
This is how I got your post here, waaaaaaay OT.

Now the reason I got a bit clenchy about it was the
particular subject matter. The tale objectifies the "black
man" for no other reason but to justify the "feel-good"
factor within it. In it's own probably unintentional way,
this tale itself is racist, albeit subtly and/or
unintentionally. And this is why I raised the issue as I
did. Not to have a go at you, but to point out the dangers
of indulging in repeating "feel-good" stuff, especially when
you are an outside observer to the situation and not
directly affected by the issues.

Kinda like hearing a comedian doing a routine on sufferers
of Arthritis, even though they have no real idea about
living with it...

Or some guy telling Jewish jokes, even though its obvious
he's not Jewish...

Or some gushy old Starlette indulging in calling Gays
"special people", etc...

Did I explain that ok?

Simpsons did it!

And David Icke did it ages ago...

;)

P.S. Don't confuse my responses with any kind of censure of
the person I respond to. I respond becasue I feel a
need to, AND I consider the person worth responding to.
If I thought I was dealing with a moron, I'd just plonk
them and get on with the rest of the posts. (You wanna
see my plonk-list for alt.morons!!! 8)

IOW, If I reply, EVEN if I'm appearing critical of post
content, its based on a respect for the person I'm
replying to.

Apologies for not snipping, but, for the record...

You have either completely mis-read what I said, or you are
being deliberately obtuse here.

In fact, I get the idea that you are trying to turn what I
DID say, and what I DID ask about, around and start up a
whole new "game" here, with intent to distract.

Which leads me to also suspect you understand full well what
I was refering to.

Lets do this again huh, before you end up claiming to
represent what I was talking about...

1/ I did NOT accuse Gwen of being racist. Period.

2/ I understand she posted in good humour and intent.

3/ The issues I raised are not "nothing", and should not be
"shuffled under the carpet" just because they are
uncomfortable to deal with.

It is my opinion that Gwen, with all the best intent in the
world, posted a story that is loaded with a kind of
"built in" racism and exclusivity that would pass by the
"innocent mind", but would still carry attitudes and concept
models that could and would tend to perpetuate a kind of
"tolerance" attitude, rather than "acceptance".

Just because Gwen didn't see this, and just because you
might not have seen this, does not mean it is not there.

This "stealth racism" payload that I do NOT hold Gwen guilty
of in ANY WAY, is what I was trying to raise awareness
about, NOT "have a go" at Gwen.
