Good point, Jim. And alot of people with anxiety disorders tend to think too
little of themselves.

Can't one have a high estimate of themselves, and say and do nothing in
order to influence the opinion of others?

I think we are confusing thinking highly of oneself with having an
overinflated ego. I know this because I am perfect. ;-)

Or, if one feels good about himself and is content with himself, does he
have *any* estimate of himself? Perhaps he just *lives and exists* with no
opinion.
Does estimating oneself always involve comparisons to others? The "not as
good, same, or better than others" game? The rating game?
"If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter or vain, for
always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself."
Taken from "Desiderata" by Max Ehmann 1927

Elise, my point was that maybe a person could have a high estimate of
himself, but not have a *need to prove* this to others. IOW the opinion of
others doesn't matter to a person with a high estimate of himself.
Chip
thanks,
