That depends on who you've heard of:

"Kerry King" from the band Slayer. (Just smiled and shook his hand)
"Dime Bag Darrel" from the band Pantera. (He walked into a guitar store I
was in and started buying stuff. I shook his hand, got his autograph, and
followed him around as he played with different guitars.)
"Trey Asigthoth" from the band Morbid Angel. (He gave an impromtue guitar
lesson to some kid on the steps of the concert hall. There were about 5 of
us gathered around watching him.)
"John Shaffer" from the band Iced Earth. (chatted about guitar amps with
him)
ALL of the band "In Flames" Sat at the bar with them and baught them all
bears. Very nice guys.
"R.A. Salvatore" the author of Fantasy novels. (I was the only person that
showed up at the book signing, so I had a 20 minuite conversation with him.
He was waring sweat pants and was very slopy looking. He told me it took him
about 1 month per chapter to write a book.)

who's more famous? I dunno...

In terms of actually *talking* with famous people and spending a little
time in their company, I can list these: Jane Fonda, Diana Ross, Ted
Turner, Queen Noor of Jordan.

Jackie Onassis called me at work one time (really!), but I was out when
she called. She left a nice message but not a request for me to call back.
I was so mad I missed that phone call!

Haven't heard of any of your musical acquaintances, but I think I've read
one of Salvatore's books -- did he do the novelization of the movie "Star
Wars: Attack of the Clones"?

Cool bunch of famous people to have met. :) Had I not been having a
frigging panic attack durring Morbid Angel's set I could have met Karl
Sanders from Nile. He was just walking around at the back of the venue.
So close but so far. Then again had I not been having a panic attack
I'd have happily been on the floor getting crushed.

Famous people I have met. Stephen & Tabitha King, used to come into the
bookstore I worked in nearly ten years ago, they'd always ask for me
because I didn't ask them for autographs. Genuinely nice, very laid
back people.

Dave Gutter and all the guys from the now defunct band Rustic Overtones.
Dave's dad owns the meat market a few miles away.

George Mitchell...now chairman of Disney...at a Veterans Day parade an
eon ago.

The Wizard of Uhz, Ted Kennedy. Rather boring IMHO. Rather drunk too
if I recall correctly.

Bruce Hurst when he played for the Red Sox.

Umberto Eco summered near here when I was in HS and working in a coffee
shop, he was quiet but came in every morning to have coffee and write.

"Can I have this for half price? Do you know who I am?" Martha Stewart.
Regally lives up to the nasty image.

Way back machine...Bret Michaels & Rikki Rocket of Poison at a pizza
joint after they'd wrapped up a concert.

Dear old dad recently met Vince Neil & Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) at the
local "Girls, Girls, Girls" spot. Had drinks with them and said nope, I
don't know who you are but I think my daughter used to listen to your
music. "used to" opertive words, but I think a phone call might have
gotten me there just to meet them for the hell of it.

Dr. Karl Menninger. That was when I was very young and in the Boy
Scouts. We camped on his property and once came to visit us. That was
before I developed OCD and went to his clinic for outpatient treatment -
and received mistreatment, alas.

They're all really nice guys. If they see that you want to meet them,
they'll stop what they're doing to make sure you get a chance for an
autograph and maybe a chat. They're very down to earth.

Never really met any famous people in person but I was once about 35 feet
away from Oprah when she came to "Small Town America" to do a show. She was
getting her hair and make-up done but I was too introverted to even ask for
an autograph and there were only about 6 people around her (staff). Now, I
would jump at the chance to say "hi" to her and get her autograph. I have a
deep respect for Oprah...

The Village People. My friend's brother worked for a radio station in
Phoenix when they played there and got us backstage. They were really nice
and fun. There's actually a picture of me with the group floating around
out there. I should get a copy of it and post it on ASAP's page. It's a
hoot.

I met a few race car drivers some time back. Probably the most well
known was Mario Andretti. What an asshole he was! Even in his home
town of Nazareth, PA at the race track he owns (or partially owns)?
Maybe he was having a bad hair day? ;-)

Wow.........I almost didn`t ask this question. I didn`t think there
would be many replies. Boy was I wrong :)

I`ve never met anyone famous but my father did when he worked as a
policeman in NYC. He met Lucille Ball and Isabelle Sanford. He was
also one of Yoko Ono`s bodyguards after John was murdered. He got to
be inside John and Yoko`s home and also accompanied their son Sean to
lunch at "Tavern on the Green" a few times. He was her bodyguard for
quite a few months after John died. Yoko was very good to him and the
other policeman that were assigned to her.
My father has also met some not very nice famous people, like "Son of
Sam". One of my father`s most profound moments in his life was when he
saw Pope John Paul II in person in NYC during 1979. My father was not
a religious man by any means.......but was touched so deeply by this
event.
Most of what I have told you was never told to me by my father. He
died in 1983 and with that he took so many memories and stories that
were never shared with his children. Thankfully..........my mother has
passed much of this on to me and my sisters. Twenty years after my
father`s death......and I`m still learning much about the man who was
my father.

Ready????

Dr. Seuss!!!!! Oh what a thrill. I was in the first grade and he came to
my school to visit. I talked his head off and he was very charming! I
recited "Sam I Am" to him by heart and he clapped when I finished and hugged
my neck. He was a super guy and that was one of the highlights of my life.
He had been my idol since I was 3 and my dad first read his books to me.

I don't think a rock star could have the effect on me that Dr. Seuss had as
far as being awestruck. At that time I absolutely had no shyness or anxiety
and was determined to let him hear me recite his book!! Oh the innocence of
children.

I thought my father told us everything. Since his passing, going
through a few boxes of his "important papers" and stuff, we found some
things that he never mentioned. One was his naturalization certificate.
He didn't write on the original, but he made a copy and wrote a little
story on the back about how he had just gone through boot camp so he
could fight to defend our country (WWII). There at boot camp they gave
many of the guys their citizenship papers. Well whoever gave him his
certificate really reamed him a new a-hole. Told him he was shit and
worthless. Dad wasn't one to hold back a negative story, he loved to
tell about how someone else was mean, so that must have really hit him
hard to never have told anyone. I told my mother and she was shocked
that she never heard the story either.

Who knows what else we will find? We hardly made a dent in the first
box of stuff.

Ah...that reminds me, I'd totally forgotten but while hitch-hiking
through in the summer of 1967 I got a ride from ex-formula one world
champion Stirling Moss. He was a nice, easy-going guy and indeed drove
*very* fast in his low sports car (Alfa Romeo? I'm not sure).

I keep forgetting things. Once in London (1974) I hung out with Steve
Marriott and Peter Frampton. They weren't all that interesting but they
got me to night places I wanted to go...Eventually, around 4.30 in the
morning, I ended up all alone and very drunk in a black bar somewhere in
a basement in Chelsea or Fulham playing *bongos* with a Jamaican steel
band... I was the only white guy there and people had told me *not* to
go there which was a good reason to do just that and for some odd reason
they liked me there. I got drinks and even food and had a great time. I
can't play the bongos BTW ;-)

So am I, about *my* father who died in 1976. But I learn about him by
way of memories because there are very few people alive nowadays who
knew him. I would dearly want to be able to talk to him for a few
hours... he was the most exceptional, most honourable man I ever met.
But to return to the topic of this thread: because he was a vice
president of the Dutch Supreme Court (which he saw as a weird
coincidence, not as something he deserved for being such a bright guy
;-) I met all the other members of his generation and a few younger
ones. That was an extraordinary set of true *gentlemen* of a kind that
isn't made anymore. Very formal but most compassionate and kind and all
very erudite in art & culture. I shouls add that unlie its American
counterpart the Dutch Supreme Court is an independent organization with
*no* political ties. New members are chosen by co-optation.
I will resist the temptation to writer at length about my father but
therer are many extraordinaty stories about him. He was at the top op
his profession and yet such a modest, sweet, gentle man. In the
beginning of WO II he joined the Dutch Resistance, was caught and spent
years in German concentration camps from where he returned almost
totally untraumatized and without *any* vindictive feelings towards the
Germans. Oh dear, I'll stop here. I will just add that it was a
privilege to be his son and also a bit of a problem because although
there may be no such thing as the perfect person my father came
incredibly close (not that *he* felt that way, he would have been
embarrassed to read this) and it is impossible for a son to equal that.
I'm OK as I am and I don't feel frustrated about myself (except
sometimes ;-) but that man was something else...

What's a fatwa? Is that the Dutch word for a super size of French fries
at the McDonalds in The Hague?

I would gladly buy all of your books and read them
but I'm still learning English and don't have the time to learn Dutch.

I hope your royalties are still coming in on all of your fabulous books
about art.

Is your specialty paintings ? Maybe you could write a book
about those famous, painting elephants. I have a
memory like an elephant when it comes to stories
about people who know the famous, painting elephants. :-D

Yeah...I was doing a thing for disney, and he was narrator. I was
walking around and ran into him. Now, you must understand, I have been
dancer, and a pro, and been around lots of people, no one ever made me
"gooooo gahhh". Well, I thanked him for his years of work and
entertainment. He said, in that typical voice, "Why Thank You"...and I
looked, pointed my finger and said, "yeah..yeah...yeah.." he gave me
one of those strange Grant double takes and walked off.

Years later, at a party in Pasadena, I met his personal secretary, a
male, who had to find out what kind of undies he wore.....so when
Grant was on vacation somewhere, he went into the dresser drawers and
found out he was a jockey short guy :-)

I met Grant about 1975 I think.

I can't think of anyone who I actually had a conversation with that
was famous.

I went to see the Allman Brothers at an outdoor show and
my friend got Dickey Betts autograph. We were just hanging
around a roped off area and my friend noticed him. I didn't
know his face but he was kind enough to stop over for
an autograph.

I had one tennis volley with a ranked tennis player named
Chip Hooper when I was playing in a summer city league.
I never heard of the guy before but each kid got a chance to step in
and hit one ball on "Chip Hooper Day". :-D

I was tailgating at an Eagle's football game at about
12 noon for a Monday night football game and
got to chat with a local TV sports anchor. He was
in one of the Rocky movies as a sport's reporter. Not
sure if it was the first one but I think so.

I can't think of anyone who I went to school with or
from my neighborhood who ever became famous. There
were a few sport's standouts but not household names.

My mother went to school with Andrea McGardle's mother
who played "Annie" in the Broadway play back in the
late 70's or early 80's.

As matter of fact Komar & Melamid worked with several elephants. I guess
if you tape *Komar and Melamid* at Google you will find a lot of
sites, and one of them (I think it's the Dia Foundation for the Arts but
it could also be Ronald Feldman Gallery, both in New York) has pics and
text concerning this remarable activity.

One of the nice things of books about visual art is that they most often

Hey, that reminds me. For the science fiction fans out there, I met,
and was at the house of the guy who wrote Batman and many other comic
books for many years. When I first met him, he had recently sold the
movie script "Red Sonya" to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Later on he told me
the movie really sucked, but it had been drastically rewritten from what
he wrote. His name is Doug Moench. He lives, about 30 minutes from me.
Back when I first did some work for him, I was around 22 with a wife
and a newborn. I think he also had a newborn or a very young child. He
invited my wife and I over to play some type of mystery game that was on
"laser discs", which were fairly new then (DVD's the size of an album).
I was at his home about 5 times but my anxiety kept me from ever
going to see him socially. :-( He seemed like a really cool person too.
Very down to earth compared to the comic books he wrote. He gave me a
couple different comic books and I was too afraid to even ask him to
sign them. I still have them though!

Isn't it strange how many rock artists make great music for some time
and then go on to do things that are really terrible. Slick is one of
those (but the whole band is really, although I can stand some Starship
recordings). One doesn't encounter this phenomenon in classical music
and rarely in jazz IMO.

I find the same trend with blues artists, I'm sure not nearly as much as
with classical artists, but definitely not the same as rock artists.
There are quite a few blues artists still playing great in their 70's
and beyond.

That makes me wonder? Who will be or was the first rock musician to
live into their 70's? Their 80's?

I saw John Paul II, who I always think of as Karol Wojtyla, about 20
feet away when he was in New Orleans. He passed by in the Popemobile. I
was quite surprised by how small he was. In pictures he looks like a big
burly guy but he must be about 5'3". I saw the service there in the
Superdome on TV, and I did find it moving. I admire him as a person,
though I heartily disapprove of his ultra-conservatism.

Chuck Berry will be 80 in two years. Man, that guy could still rock as of
several years ago; don't know about right now, but I wouldn't be
surprised.

Jerry Lee Lewis will be 70 next year, and he can still rattle the ivories.

James Brown is 71, I believe.

There must be others who are getting into the indisputably elderly range.

Reminds me. I went to a sci-fi convention where I saw a number of
writers. The most famous of them was Jerry Pournelle. I was surprised.
He seemed like a really nice guy, not like the obnoxious fellow who writes
