Hi everyone! I've got an idea for a good alternative to this USENET group.
Since most of us are already on Facebook, we could set up a closed Facebook
group for us. These groups are invitation only, and outsiders can't see
who's there or what's being said.

I noticed a couple of these associated with an engineering firm where
several people I know work. I just got admitted into another one, which
discusses strategic issues.

I don't know how you get one of these up, but we could ask Facebook,
Initally at least, the moderators could run the group; it doesn't look like
each post has to be approved.

What do you think, people?

Hi Dennis,

Nice to see you. How are you doing?
As to the Facebook group, if it's to be a closed group there will be no
more traffic than here.... I would join anyway but being somewhat of a
computer dummy even after all these years I haven't got the faintest as
to how to set up such a group.

Dennis, I think that's a really good idea. Just let us know how you go
about doing this. :-) I'm on FB too. Thank you!

I think the same as Philip. I also think there may be no more traffic than
here. Why can't we just keep gathering here in this newsgroup? Just my
thoughts.

I'd do it, but I'm not a big FaceBook fan. When I was on facebook I couldn't
stand it as "friends(?)" kept posting things and everybody and everything in
the universe wanted me to like them and it. I cancelled my account.
Furthermore, what if the "private" group got out and all of a sudden our
government decided we were all nuts and lost most of our freedoms as they
cross referenced this group with others. You go to the store to buy a
pressure cooker and all of a sudden you are blacklisted because of the
"private" group you belong to. Just my two cents.

I think you have an idea here Dennis, but if I may, I'd like to make a
suggestion. In case anyone doesn't know, or remember, I am one of the
moderators of ASAPM.

A closed Facebook group would be just that, closed. Unless someone had a
Facebook account (there are still those of us that are not on Facebook),
and was invited, they wouldn't know about it or be able to find it.

I would suggest you create a open, moderated Google or Yahoo group. The
advantage here is that it would be in a directory and searchable. You
could allow anyone to post and have those posts moderated, and then you
could allow people to join and have those posts moderated or not, etc.

I would be willing to help you get something like that started, if
you're interested. You would want to choose Yahoo or Google, and there
are pro's and con's to each, pick a name, decide who the initial owners
and moderators would be, etc.

I would also recommend you do something similar to what we did when we
started ASAPM with the Charter and Guidelines. You don't have to be that
formal, but a written set of guidelines that group moderators follow
make it much easier to resolve any issues with what is or isn't
acceptable posting in the future.

Something else you may want to consider is just looking around Google
and Yahoo groups to see what is already out there. I have not looked but
there may be active anxiety related groups that already exist and you
wouldn't need to recreate the wheel, so to speak.

Let me know what you think.

Asap group hasn't has many messages for a long time. This moderated asapm
group does not have many messages either, but we do have some. I used to go
on asap several years ago but trolls took over which was too bad as it was
quite a good group at one time. Then I came to the moderated group which was
a good group and still is, but most people who were regulars here disapeared
quite a while ago. I don't know where they went, maybe Facebook or Twitter
or one of these media groups. but many people wanted to move on to other
things or just wanted a change. I really don't know. This group was always
good for discussing anxiety-panic and there was a lot of good people and a
lot of support. Some of us still post here, so we have not all disappeared.

I just happened to drop in and I notice that some people from years ago
are back here.

Why don't we invite some more of the old crowd to join us here again? I
know several on FB -Cathy (Anxiety), Cheryl, Pete, Robin, Anne...

Why did the group break up in the first place?

Hi Dot, haven't seen you here for quite a while. It would be nice to have
some of the old crowd back. I don't remember any of the people you mention
above on this newsgroup, but maybe before my time but I have been posting
here on and off for several years now. The "old" regulars from here
gradually started to leave a couple of years ago and there are only a few of
us here who still post. Philip, Sheldon, TJ sometimes, Vanessa (she hasn't
posted for a little while now), Diana, Diane, but most left a while ago like
Jackie, Elise, remember Margrove, psychiatrist? - always interesting to talk
with. And there was the doctor from SanFran -forget his name now. They were
all here when I came. It used to be really busy here. Maybe they just got
tired of it here and wanted to move on. I really don't know the reason. It
was always a good place to come here for support for anxiety-panic issues.

Hi Mary,

I was absent for a while (I think it was because I was so enamoured of
my new laptop) and when I came back Jackie and a lot of other people had
gone.

I am "friends" with Jackie and Elise on FB. Also Cheryl, Pete, Robin,
Jessica, and Charla. I can ask whether any of them wants to come back
here. I think it would be great for us to all be together again. I
used to come here first thing in the morning. I had so much fun and
learned a lot too.

I would like to know what Margrove is doing now and even if he's still
alive.

Chip (the doctor from San Francisco) moved in with his mom in Santa Rosa
after his father died and, as far as I know, is still there. I don't
think he's on FB. We used to exchange Christmas and birthday cards, and
he would also email some of us pictures of his grandchildren, but
haven't heard from him for years.

I don't see any reason to start a new group if we can get our old group
back together again.

Yes, it would be nice to know. Calling Margrove, come in Margrove.....

Hi Dot (nice to see your name on my screen again)!

Margrove is alive and still treating patients in private practice. He is
not going to join this group again, I'm sure and neither will the others
who have left in the wake of the Great Troll Wars on ASAP and were maybe
disappointed in the lack of traffic in this group, I don't know for
sure. For new people it seems Usenet is hard to find - I subscribe to
another group (rec.music.clasical.recordings) which is very much alive
and kicking. It would be nice if more people would find us here but then
fewer IPs are ofering Usenet than before. Or maybe everyone is *cured*.

Glad to hear Margrove is still in business. If you are in contact with him,
tell him we miss his helpful posts in ASAPM and is welcome to come back any
time. We who post here still need help.:)
BTW, what happened to Chip? Is he cured as well?

I have been using two free newsgroup servers for the past few years which
are very good and ASAPM has been available since then and was very busy till
a couple of years ago, maybe more by now. My primary IP dropped Usenet about
4 or 5 years ago. But for whatever reasons, people left ASAPM. Maybe they
felt it was time to move on. We may never know since they didn't come back
here to tell us. At least a few of us still post here from time to time and
give and get support or just chat. You still appear here sometimes too. It's
always nice to see you :)

The man is an invaluable source and very generous with his vast
knowledge on all things medical, he knows so much more about it than
most pdocs.

Hello, Dennis, nice to meet you. I really don't care for Facebook myself, so
I won't be joining.
