Well done! How are you feeling, any better?
I've got my daily walking homework from the pain clinic, the idea is to
build up the length of time I can tolerate walking... pain or no pain. The
starting point was decided by seeing how long I could walk on 7 days,
adding the minutes up for an average and taking 70% of that as a
reasonable time. Just *10* minutes! I've got a schedule for increasing the
time every other day-ish so that within a month I should be able to
tolerate 30 minutes. Whee- I'm going places, LOL!
Monday - goal 13 but was 14 minutes (horrors, I overwalked<g>)
Tuesday - goal 13, took the dog along and ended up doing 18.

I think that is when one execises one's core.
Sally (who only peeped in here to see why TJ was posting in here! LOL.
WTG T.J., Philip and of course, Rita. I'm going to go take a nap on
behalf of you all)
I do the core exercises using hollow breathing, pulling in the abdominal
region, while doing sit-ups, an exercise called the bug and I use an
exercise ball where I lift my legs, one at a time for 30 times. I'm amazed
at how less often I start to fall off of the ball since I've been doing them
since November. These exercises were given to me by my chiropractor to work
on strengthening my abdominal region and to be more perceptive of my
surroundings in relation to my footing. I also do a balancing on one foot
bending the other foot up and back for a count of 5 secs - much improvement
in this area also.

Elise

Dear TJ,
It's great that you want to get by with as little meds as possible. If
exercising is important to you, not to mention the mental and physical health
benefits of exercising, ask your doctor about using regular Inderal on a "as
needed" basis, like an hour or two before exercising. On days you don't
exercise, don't take it. Good luck!

Philip (you are my insipration)
Yeowh.... how do you do it? You give my a deep sense of inferiority ;-)
(What is *Pilates* (Pontius?) and who is Lotte Berk?)
Philip
The elliptical is fairly easy and the other work, while not easy, flies by.
Pilates, named after Pontius <vbg>, is a form of torturous exercise in which
you contort your body in increasingly horrific ways to build "core"
strength. This way, if someone tries to run you through with a sword, they
are met with a wall of impenetrable muscle.
That about sums it up. Oh, and for my class, we use a large blow-up ball and
try to do stupid things like balance on top of it. Believe it or not, this
can be done. But it's only fun until you roll off sideways and crack your
skull on the floor.
Lotte Berk was a prominent figure in the Spanish Inquisition who invented
torture methods using a "barre". Many people use these for ballet exercises,
but do not realize that ballet is actually a form of torture too. Lotte
figured out that if you make people do ballet style leg and core
strengthening exercises (oh, and bum too) without the *fun* of actually
getting to dance ballet, it would push them to the limits of their sanity
and make them cry "mommy" a lot.
This is what I do six days a week, wearing my hairshirt.

I only manage 20 minutes on a stationary bike and almost die from

I get incredibly bored as well, Philip, which is the reason I can only do
about 30 mins. The elliptical is a machine you stand on, kind of like a
stair stepper, but your feet never leave the pedals (except you lift your
heels a bit) and they move in an elliptical shape. It's very easy on the
joints because it's virtually no-impact and it's also weight-bearing, which
is good, or so I'm told. There are arm poles I hold on to as well, so my
arms get a bit of a workout along with my legs. It's a pretty cool machine
and more fun than a treadmill.

Sure! Come on over! You can laugh at my pathetic attempts to keep up with

I just started using the ball in my Pilates class three weeks ago. I too am
amazed at how quickly, esp. with core work, you can learn to balance on it.
I can actually balance on top of it on my knees now for a minute or so.
That's amazing for someone with no balance, like me.
You are doing great, too! Have you noticed any changes in clothing sizes or
body fat measurements? I have a body fat scale, which is not the best gauge,
but it shows I'm down 2%, which it's never done in the year I've had it. Of
course, this is the most strenuous exercise I've done in years on a regular
