Are there any group support for the families of amputees? My father
has gone through four amputation surgeries due to diabetes. He is
told that more is needed because his wound is not healing. My father
has seemed to have lost his zest for life. All he does is lie
sleeping or fades in and out of reality. He hallucinates quite
frequently. We do not know what to do. My mother is the primary
caregiver, but myself, my younger brother, and my sister try to help
whenever we can, but we can't seem to motivate him. We are enduring
much emotional pain, but who knows how much longer. It is painful for
me to watch my father fade from this life.

Thanx for any help,

Chas

Chas,
I am so sorry to hear about the difficulty your father has had with
his diabetes. I am a 30 year old diabetic (diagnosed 1979) and lost my
left leg BK in 1997. It was my 32nd surgery in 10 years and I am now up
to #37. I kept having toes amputated then metatarsals, eventually my left
leg. I've been told it probably won't stop there.
I don't understand the hallucinations but the sleeping sounds like
depression. A visit from an amputee in similar circumstances, age, and in
your area couldn't do harm. There are support groups in most major cities
where amputees are more than happy to talk with other amputees and their
families..
I realize that the family pays a HUGE price with this disease and I am
so sorry you're one that has to. I know that I put my family through hell
until I realized that living wasn't so bad, even with a few compromises.
I hope you find peace and hope, and your dad too.
Laura aka Peggy Ilene Stump

Chas, Sorry to hear about your Dad. I am a amputee and founded a Support Group. We are located in Middleburg Hts, Oh. The Amputee Coalition (they are on the web) list all support groups all over the country. Sounds like he needs to be under doctors care. Hallucinations can be caused from his sugar is way to low or highor he has a high fever.
