Hi All,
A friend at work highly recommends this therapy, I get the impression
it's a diet supplement. I did a query about this subject and found a
site (Quackwatch) that disagreed with the benefits. What are the
experiences of the members of this group? Is there a majority opinion or
is the jury still out on this subject. I'm up to my fourth stint and
this is getting old.

They take your blood out - like dialysis - processes it and put it back in. To
my knowledge it has no proven benefit for the heart (it does if your blood is
lead contaminated or something) and is not accepted by the medical community
for treatment of heart problems.

Not True!
You are hooked up to an IV drip line that contains a chelating agent
(EDTA). The initial percentage of the agent and then it is increased
gradually. These infusions take about an hour and you are monitored
by an RN during the infusion period. Infusions take place every 7 to
10 days and blood tests are done to observe the blood profile changes.

It is an accepted cure for removing lead from your system if diagnosed
as having a too large amount (sometimes in certain industries -
automobile battery making industry) workers absorb lead from the work
environment. The purpose of the chelating agent is to displace the
heavier metal (lead) from the body (bloodstream).

The "wholistic" Doctors claim that ANY heavier metal (calcium - as in
plaque) will be removed from the body, not just lead (remember it IS
accepted as a lead removant). So it is more of a plaque removal
process than a direct heart therapy.

I had it done to me for 3 or 4 sessions, back in the early 90's with
negligible results. The sessions were around $90 per session, not
including the blood tests. Insurance will NOT cover it unless you
have documented high lead levels, as above - treatment is OK for that
ONLY!

Here is a technical article link on EDTA

Hi,

There are large public medical databases that all physicians use and that
you can search as well if you have questions like this. The largest is
PubMed from the US National Library of Medicine:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi

If you search for reviews on EDTA and atherosclerosis there are several good
ones, but none after 2002 which indicates that the amount of research in the
subject is declining. Which again is understandable if you read the
conclusions - fx. "Chelation therapy for coronary heart disease: An overview
of all clinical investigations. E Ernst. American Heart Journal 2000,
140(1): 139-41" that concludes: "Given the potential of chelation therapy to
cause severe adverse effects, this treatment should now be considered
obsolete."
A Cochrane review from 2002 has the same conclusion although in a slightly
milder tone (Cochrane reviews are very strict and correct...): "Chelation
therapy for atherosclerotic Cardiovascular disease. Villarruz MV, Dans A,
Tan F. Cochrane Database Systematic Review 2002;(4): CD002785" that
concludes: "At present, there is insufficient evidence to decide on the
effectiveness or ineffectiveness of chelation therapy in improving clinical
outcomes of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This
decision must be preceded by conducting randomized controlled trials that
would include endpoints that show the effects of chelation therapy on
longevity and quality of life among patients with atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease."

So, unless you are the Dr Jekyll-type that likes to do experiments on
yourself, my best advice is: Stay away from EDTA.

Michael & Warren,
Thanks for your input. After more research I have to agree with you,
EDTA isn't the solution.

I found out about EDTA on the Internet. I ordered this product containing
