African-American Astronauts

Many of us possess talents and abilities
but do not excel because we don't take
the chances or act on the challenges that
come our way. We need to walk over to
the edge of our abilities and then move
beyond that edge ... From the outside
this can look difficult. However, once
you've acquired the skills to perform
the task, it seems almost easy.
Like most things in life, it's easy
if you know how. --Ronald. E. McNair
Guion S. Bluford became the first African-American
to go into space in August 1983 aboard the Challenger.
It was the first launch and landing of a space shuttle at
night. His mission on this flight included the deployment
of an Indian communications satellite. He later served as
a mission specialist on Challenger (October 30, 1985) and
Discovery (April 28, 1991 and December 2, 1992). [Cont...

Genome to the Proteome: Basic Science
http://www.ornl.gov/hgmis/project/info.html
[...] The genome is an organism's complete
set of DNA. Genomes vary widely in size:
the smallest known genome for a free-living
organism (a bacterium) contains about
600,000 DNA base pairs, while human and
mouse genomes have some 3 billion.
Except for mature red blood cells, all human
cells contain a complete genome. [...]
Although genes get a lot of attention, it's
the proteins that perform most life functions
and even make up the majority of cellular
structures. Proteins are large, complex
molecules made up of smaller subunits called
amino acids. Chemical properties that
distinguish the 20 different amino acids cause
the protein chains to fold up into specific
three-dimensional structures that define their
particular functions in the cell.

"Scientists: Idea of Race is Only Skin Deep,"
by Robert Boyd in the Miami Herald
(Oct. 13, 1996; p. 14A):
WASHINGTON -- Thanks to spectacular advances in
molecular biology and genetics, most scientists
now reject the concept of race as a valid way to
divide human beings into separate groups.
Contrary to widespread public opinion,
researchers no longer believe that races are
distinct biological categories created by
differences in the genes that people inherit
from their parents...."Race has no basic
biological reality," said Jonathan Marks,
a Yale University biologist....Instead, a
majority of biologists and anthropologists,
drawing on a growing body of evidence
accumulated since the 1970s, have concluded
that race is a social, cultural and political
concept based largely on superficial
appearances. [...]

What Does the Draft Human Genome Sequence Tell Us?
[Last modified: Monday, May 06, 2002 ]
By the Numbers
[...] http://www.ornl.gov/hgmis/project/info.html
[] The human genome contains 3164.7 million chemical nucleotide
bases (A, C, T, and G).
[] The average gene consists of 3000 bases, but sizes vary
greatly, with the largest known human gene being dystrophin
at 2.4 million bases.
[] The total number of genes is estimated at 30,000 to 35,000
much lower than previous estimates of 80,000 to 140,000 that
had been based on extrapolations from gene-rich areas as
opposed to a composite of gene-rich and gene-poor areas.
[] Almost all (99.9%) nucleotide bases are exactly the same in
all people.
[] The functions are unknown for over 50% of discovered genes.

Immediately after the Minister answered their question about the

heard one of the executives lean over and whisper these words to
another: "He knows." I don't believe he intended to be heard. But he was.
...are those highly placed members of the media, one of whom whispered
concerning the Minister, "He knows", an example of those high up in power

"The problem of anxiety in our time is about
being in our bodies, or not. The old system
for emotional stability was to traumatize
our children and take sedatives as adults.
(Religion has been a leading sedative.)
This made an opening for an efficient
warrior class: traumatized,
out-of-their-bodies (and hence insensitive)
performers of violence. And it gave a deep
legitimacy to the occurrence of violence in
society, whatever the surface inconvenience.
However, now that efficient violence depends
on extremely complex technology, the old
warrior class is obsolete. So, we are now
engaged in the task of reversing the cultural
practice of traumatizing our children and
sedating ourselves, and the 'deep legitimacy'
of violence is eroding, ever so slowly."

"... If you think of [reality] as the software for the
universe, all it would take is for someone to change a
comma in the program and the chair you are sitting in
wouldn't be a chair at all. The major benefit from this
model is that it handles anomalies very well.
Coincidences would be a normal expectation. If you
address a database with a request for anything with the
word 'pool' you will get ads for sunscreen, lotions,
billiard balls and an investment prospectus or two.
In parapsychology gifted subjects may be forcing similar
coincidences between separate locations or separate minds.
One way of testing the theory, by the way, is to create
massive informational anomalies and see what happens when
they collapse. You could enhance remote viewing
experiments, for instance, by loading the site with large
quantities of data about highly unlikely events or
situations, then quickly erase that data to collapse the
singularity.
[...]
"You can get a consistent representation of reality if you
look at the world as a collection of events, or 'instances'
(as the philosophy of Occasionalism did in the eleventh
century), rather than as a collection of material objects
moving in 3-dimensional space as time flows. In virtual
reality, of course, you can't tell the difference. In the
real world information and energy are actually the same
physical quantity. In a universe viewed as 'informational
events' you should expect coincidences, telepathy, time
travel, multiple realities--all those things that seem
impossible in the 4-D energy universe. To me that's why
puzzles like UFOs are interesting. I don't have a personal
theory to 'explain' them, but I see them as an opportunity
to pose new questions. If it's true that information
resides in the questions we ask, coming up with novel
problems may be more important than having answers, at
this stage of our very limited understanding of the
universe..." -- Jacques Vallee
Vallee refers to this complex system of control--which
is shaping human society over the course of thousands of
years--as an 'interface of reality with consciousness.'
It sounds a lot like Arthur C. Clarke's science fictional
theme in 2001: A Space Odyssey--an alien intelligence
subtly directing the course of human development, toward
mysterious ends. Talk about your cosmic conspiracies!

Symptoms of Schizophrenia:
The symptoms of schizophrenia are generally
divided into three categories, including positive,
disorganized and negative symptoms.
Positive Symptoms, or "psychotic" symptoms,
include delusions and hallucinations because the
patient has lost touch with reality in certain
important ways. "Positive" as used here does not
mean "good." Rather, it refers to having overt
symptoms that should not be there. Delusions
cause the patient to believe that people are
reading their thoughts or plotting against them,
that others are secretly monitoring and
threatening them, or that they can control other
people’s minds. Hallucinations cause people to
hear or see things that are not there.
Disorganized Symptoms include confused thinking
and speech, and behavior that does not make sense.
For example, people with schizophrenia sometimes
have trouble communicating in coherent sentences
or carrying on conversations with others; move
more slowly, repeat rhythmic gestures or make
movements such as walking in circles or pacing;
and have difficulty making sense of everyday
sights, sounds and feelings.
Negative Symptoms include emotional flatness or
lack of expression, an inability to start and
follow through with activities, speech that is
brief and lacks content, and a lack of pleasure or
interest in life. "Negative" does not, therefore,
refer to a person’s attitude, but to a lack of
certain characteristics that should be there.

Of course who likes perfect people? I met a woman that was head of mensa
or what ever once and she said that she was perfect. Well all I can tell
you is this. If that is what perfect means then leave me out.
This reminds me of a coffee mug I saw once called the perfect woman. On the
front side of the mug there were two large breasts and on the back side was
a huge ass. That was it.
I guess perfect then is in the eyes of the beer holder.

But, buddy, you've already stated that you're perfect! So this
gimpy woman wasn't, if she didn't match you. =( (Unless you're not
happy with yourself, but wouldn't that preclude bein' perfect?)

She may have the brains, but did you ever make love to a brain?
You would need some strong fantasy for that unless you just happen to like
making love to brains.
I wonder what the medical term for that would be?
I love women with brains. :)
