Perhaps worth a look, though I have not as yet read the book: "The Master
and his Emissary" by Iain McGilchrist. Subtitled "The Divided Brain and the
Making of the Western World", the book is a study of the specialist
hemispheric functioning of the brain, and the conflict between the world
views of the left and right brain.

''The left hemisphere, though unaware of its dependence, could be thought of
as an "emissary" of the right hemisphere, valuable for taking on a role that
the right hemisphere - the "Master" - cannot itself afford to undertake.
However it turns out that the emissary has his own will, and secretly
believes himself to be superior to the Master. And he has the means to
betray him. What he doesn't realize is that in doing so he will also betray
himself.''

Iain McGilchrist's findings: that the right and left hemispheres' functions
specialize in comprehensiveness and precision respectively, certainly gel
with my own view that there are two main modes: integration and
differentiation, which may reconciles and integrated at a higher level.

With good wishes,
eric.

The Battle of the Brain

Iain McGilchrist has an essay on the battle between the brain's left and
right hemispheres in The Wall Street Journal. It is based on his book The
Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western
World.
