I just updated my list of toll free numbers seen in recent e-mail spam.
It now only contains numbers seen in June or July. This list is also

Compiling this list is a fair amount of work, but it does have its
small pleasures. Several numbers in this list are the same except
for extension, even though they appear in very different spams. One
number I saw in a spammed newsletter was the same as this common
number except that two digits were transposed. Sure enough, it didn't
work, but when I transposed them back before calling and giving the
extension, it worked fine, and I was able to leave a message. This
poor spammer paid to advertise the wrong number! The only calls he
will ever get are ones from people who saw his number here on this
list, since I've fixed it for him here.
I strongly suggest you call each number not more than once a month,
during business hours, and ask to talk to the most senior person.
If you don't have time to call all the numbers, I suggest you start
where your phone number would be, so that the numbers at the top
don't get a disproportionate number of calls while the ones on the
bottom are ignored. Thanks for calling!

Don't let that discourage you. Word will get back to the spammers.
If they're paying for a hundred complaint calls for every one customer
call, they'll rethink spamming. Perhaps they'll even consider asking
Spamford or Rines or whoever sold them spamming services and/or
software for their money back. Or if we're really lucky, suing
the spam kings for fraud and for massive loss of reputation.
Also, if the answering service people have any ethics, or if they have
any kind of reputation they wish to protect, after enough complaints
come in from us to make the nature of their spamming customer clear,
the answering service may refuse to have any further business dealings
with the spammer. Or if they decide they have no reputation and don't
mind sleazy customers, the answering service's ethical employees will
eventually resign to go work for an honest employer. And the answering
service will be stuck with unethical dishonest employees who are just
as likely to steal from their employer as from anyone else.
So please keep those calls coming. Thank you.

This has nothing to do with answering service ethics. They
are paid by the client to answer the phone. They will, and should,
do so. They didn't do anything wrong, so don't take it out on them.
Just call, be nice to them, explain (take your time to make sure your
clear and thorough), and make sure they take your complaint. The
spammer pays them for this, so let them do the job they are paid
to do.
