Google appears to be in the process of shutting down the
Google Groups Advanced Search - all searches by Message-ID
now either find nothing at all, or find the thread but will
not display any messages within that thread (a 404 error
is displayed instead). Are they trying to make Google
Groups more friendly to spammers and other abusers by
making it very difficult to report any spam or other abuse
that is more than a month old?

The solution is don't use Google Groups. Stick to Usenet.

For reporting spam posted through Google Groups?

Google Groups has PARTIALLY fixed the problem with their
Advanced Search page, but in an unexpected way. That
page will still not go on to display the messages, only
the threads that contain them.

However, if you log in, then select a newsgroup as if you
were going to read it, the search box at the top has a
triangle at the right end, and clicking in that triangle
allows a search within that newsgroup only.

This method has a problem with newsgroups with a name
that contains at least one "+" character - it will not
display the messages, only list the threads that contain
them. So don't waste your time trying it on newsgroup
comp.lang.c++, for example.
