TOLEDO, Ohio — A morning robbery in West Toledo left one suspect dead from
gunshot wounds and another in custody.
According to a press release from the Toledo Police Department, officers
were dispatched around 9:25 a.m. to a reported robbery at gunpoint in the
Dollar General on 828 Phillips Avenue. The two suspects were also said to
have robbed an individual at the store.
While fleeing on foot, one suspect allegedly fired a weapon at a pursuing
officer. Police then formed a perimeter.
Officers, including a member of the Critical Incident Negotiation Team,
reportedly tried to deescalate the situation while the suspect refused to
cooperate. Witnesses at the scene on Dryden Drive near Vermaas Avenue
likewise said they heard gunfire and the officers repeatedly requesting
that the suspect surrender.
He is described by police to have pointed the gun at his own head, lowered
it and then raised and pointed it at officers before they shot him. He was
treated for his wounds on scene and taken to a hospital where he was later
pronounced dead.
The other suspect was arrested later and two firearms were recovered.
Neither suspect has been publicly identified.
The officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative
leave and body camera footage of the incident will be released in the
future.
