That file sounds to me like it is a proprietary file type for the AW16G and
which probably contains all the individual project track data. Having just
taken a look at this Sound on Sound review,
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct02/articles/yamahaaw16g.asp it seems to
suggest that you would normally need to export data from the AW16G as .WAV
files
I've just looked up the relevant pages in the AW16G manual (Page 132) here:
http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/pa/english/recorders/AW16GE.pdf and the
file type you have isn't mentioned. However, what you have looks to me like
a data dump or song backup intended to be loaded back into the AW16G or one
of it's siblings for future editing. See page 145 in the manual.
You *might* be able to extract the data from the file you have as .WAV files
using a free downloadable utility called AWExtract from here:
http://www.socialentropy.com/aw4416/ It seems to have been originally
developed for use with the AW16G's stable mates the AW4416 and the AW2816
but apparently supports AW16G files provided they have been backed up in the
AW2816 format. I don't have a Yamaha AW16G or any other Yamaha recorder to
verify what I suspect is the answer to your problem, but I do have an Alesis
HD24 and someone has kindly developed a similar utility to extract the data
from an HD24 formatted hard drive (even a corrupted drive) by connecting to
a standard PC hard drive header in addition to the official Alesis Fireport
device, so I guessed that there might be a similar application for your
AW16G. Google is a wonderful thing :-)
