STORY LINE (in english):'Jürgen Koch has been unemployed for a while and no longer wants charity from his lady friend Ms. Elli Reisinger, who owns a pub. He is also planning to open a proper “Ristorante” with her.
The attempt to get the money to do so' through card games in smoke filled back rooms 'fails. In the end, Jürgen loses all of his money to someone named Hans Werner Hartung. Since he has only "borrowed" that money for the gaming round from Elli', Jürgen now 'wants to put it back in her cash register before she notices that the cash register is missing money that was there.
He lets himself be tempted to attack the small car dealership with stocking overheard. Jürgen talks about aspects of it with a friend that he was playing cards with. Afterwards, he almost takes a drink while actually smoking a cigarette. A man was watching Jürgen from across the street during the robbery. Although everything initially goes as planned and' Jürgen 'has almost left the robbed dealership with the money, the owner draws his pistol and they shoot at each other. Jürgen quickly fires and runs away as' the bullet 'hits the man on the arm.' Surprisingly, 'Jürgen's car has also disappeared but ' for the time being he 'escapes - running after' and getting on 'a bus.
The colonel was in his Grünwalder residence where he was shot' by Hans and had the DM '30,000' stolen from him. Two ladies, one Irmgard von Waldau and the other Mrs von Bredow the colonel's wife, heard the shot and one tries to break into the colonel's house to see what happened. Then in the front, he barges through them and drives away - in Jürgen's stolen car.
Munich police detective inspector senior commissioner Ludwig Lenz and police assistant Franzjosef Schneider arrive at the crime scene and talk to the witnesses.
Hans even tells his fiancee Hannelore Engel about it, saying he has an alibi. Hans' fiancee Ms. Engel calls the residence. Lenz then tells Hans on the phone about the colonel being dead. Lenz later finds Hans' fiancee and they talk.
Lenz then sees Hans and tells him about the colonel being dead and Hans says he's traveling there by taxi because his car is still in the shop.
Jürgen sees Elli, then gives the money to Elli, but she gives it back.
Lenz later finds Jürgen Koch, this time lifting weights and detains him as an urgent suspect, but he also has doubts as Koch's statements seem a bit confused.
The police appear and demand an explanation as to why he knocked over part of a vegetable stand' wounding a bicyclist which he never did, but Hans did 'and then simply drove on' which he never did, but Hans did. 'Hoping to have an alibi through this accident, Jürgen admits it.
Jürgen' still 'cannot yet enjoy his success' yet. Lenz gets Jürgen's address from Susanne Kern, another police assistant. Then, she stops Jürgen and he's cuffed later when he runs from Lenz and Schneider. They find the money at his apartment.
But later at the police station, Jürgen denies the von Bredow break-in and murder, but says he robbed the car dealership. The police show him the car dealer as a witness.
In a comparison, a witness named Mrs. von Waldaua the friend of the wife of the murdered colonel cannot clearly identify' the murderer 'strangely enough' though 'Hans has been employed there occasionally for the colonel' he says since WWII and works there 'as a chauffeur. She says that she saw: "Sunglasses and it all happened so fast".
At the von Brelow's, Jürgen explains to the commissioners that they both met while playing poker. Lenz brings in Jürgen both at the crime scene with most of the witnesses and finds out that they both played the illegal poker game. Partly over Cognac with Hartung upstairs, Lenz collects some evidence against Hartung.
So, Lenz researches Hartung partly at a hotel and finds out that the colonel appointed Hartung as heir and that he also suffered from the colonel's whims. The witness talks freely at the hotel then later, the witness concludes to his wife that Hartung is the murderer. Hartung is suspected of having another name: Schmidt.
The illegal gambling operation is raided. The other poker player at the illegal card playing operation is now at the police station and is met face to face with Jürgen who all through further questioning find out that Hartung must be the murderer.
Later, the murder witness Mrs von Waldau catches Harting rummaging through her bedroom. Mrs von Waldau then tells Harting that he shot colonel von Bredow.
Lenz talks as if Hartung's conviction may become more difficult than he thought. But, Susane shadows the von Bulow house and the other poker player shows up and tries to extort Hartung for money. Lenz and the other police then raid the house. The other poker player points to Hartung as the murderer.
After, the police manage to find the weapon with which the colonel was shot - found by a girl during a fishing trip in the water Hans, the driver of his car is brought to the station, admits to having used Jürgen's car.
The murderer's witness Mrs von Waldau finds and tells Ms. Hannelore Engel that Hartung is really someone named 'Schmidt' who killed his wife after WWII. Ms. Engel doesn't want to hear her. Old photos are brought out as proof. Ms Engel is mad and gets out a gun. Hartung and Lenz and Schneider appear at the door. Somehow that gun found in the river is the murder weapon which has the writing on it: "Von Bredow"? Is it the one that Ms. Engel now found in the drawer? Did Lenz, von Waldau and Engel all decide that Hans used that as a murder weapon to kill von Brelow and then they stashed it in the drawer, leading Hans up to the room to be accused (of the crime that he none-the-less committed)?
Either way, Lenz now charges Hans 'with the murder of colonel von Bredow'.
