Hey,

My friend says that Spock was called "Dr. Spock". I say NOT!

Maybe in later movies maybe...

I know he's wrong. So I bet him $500 that I could Proove he was wrong! (The
American legal system is not at work here. The burden of proof is on me, even
though He brought it up.)

Does anyone know of any _conclusive_ proof that Spock's NOT a Phd?

Desperatly seeking Spock.

No conclusive proof, but I'm on your side - Spock was called Mister Spock
(just like all the other officers) until he was promoted to captain in one of
those later movies at which time he became CAPTAIN Spock...

Doctor Spock was the guy who wrote all those kid psychology books <wink>...

There was indeed a Doctor Spock. He was Doctor Benjamin Spock, an American
baby doctor who wrote an influential child-raising book in the late 1960's.
When Gene Roddenberry was informed that the name of his Vulcan was of a real
person it was too late to change it. Star Trek and the baby-doctor both
emerged into the public eye about the same time and some people who knew little
of either confused the two into one.

Sorry, you're wrong. Spock was called "Dr. Spock" in Mojo Nixon's
breakthrough tune "Elvis is Everything."

<or was that "Elvis is Everywhere?">

Johnzo.

ps. Of course, Mojo Nixon is canonical, right?

I believe your friend is getting Mr. Spock of the Enterprise (who
probably has the equivalent of several different PhD's, but never calls
himself anything but "Mr.") mixed up with Dr. Benjamin Spock, who wrote
"Baby and Child Care" a long time ago. (A real twit -- some of the stuff
he recommended is a real hoot!)

Well, Gene, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that
you are correct. The bad news is that you can never collect on your bet
because you can only win if you proove that something did not happen:
only possible by examining ALL events and checking to see if they meet or
fial the criterea. Your freind, meanwhile can collect if he finds a
single instance of the event. Try to cancell the bet or get it clarified
to mean only in the series. In that event, you are only some 80 hrs away
from collecting your $500 by watching evey episode (in which you will se
th\at the character "Spock" is never refered to as "Dr."

Which is because only officers of Commander rank and below
get "Mister." Above that, they must be addressed by rank.

This is a quite ordinary misconception though. Leonard Nimoy got
a fan letter from a man that said that he and his wife really loved
his work as an actor, "epecially your role as Dr. Spock on Star Trek."
That has got to be one of the most embarrassing things you can do...

Of course Mojo is canon! In ST VI Spock quotes the Vulcan proverb: Only
Nixon can go to China! Who else could he have meant?

Doctor McCoy called Spock "Doctor" in Season 1 Episode 3 "Charlie."

So far, I've found this info on Spock's "degrees" or specialties" and I'm not finished yet. Here's what I've got on my preliminary look:

* class A7 expert in computers, the HIGHEST rank attainable.
* Vulcanian Scientific Legion of Honor, also the HIGHEST rank attainable on Vulcan in the sciences.
In the episode "Court Martial," the computer lists Mister Spock as such:
"Spock, serial number S-179-276-SP. Service rank: Lieutenant Commander. Position: first officer, science officer. Current assignment: U.S.S. Enterprise. Commendations: Vulcanian Scientific Legion of Honor. Awards of valor: twice decorated by Starfleet command."
*Someone suggested that Spock and other Vulcans didn't use the title "Doctor" except for medical doctors and when other cultures used them, such as in the case of Doctor Daystrom. For Vulcans, you didn't wear your academic achievements as appellations. It was arrogant. A knowledgeable person on a message board also said he believes Spock had attained a degree in Vulcan Psychiatry or Psychology, as he had many conflicts being a "half-breed" and was perhaps bullied as a young person because his mother was human, so we can presume he had some study in this field.

Total list as we know it in Original Series, NOT Kelvin timeline:
* class A7 expert in computers--highest rank attainable.
* Vulcanian Scientific Legion of Honor, highest rank attainable on Vulcan in the sciences. (We presume this includes astrophysics, physics, chemistry, biology, among other sciences.)
* Most likely, some degree in Vulcan Psychology
More info to follow as I find it. And I agree with you--Spock most certainly had many advanced degrees. Sorry this is 14 years too late, but if I can assist, I've set this to give me email alerts. Reply and I'll receive your messages. ~J.S.

For clarification, McCoy only calls Spock "Doctor" once, S1Ep3 "Charlie." Spock did not have "PhDs" but did have advanced degrees in Computers and in the Sciences. Presumably, Vulcan did not grant PhDs, but equivalent degrees. Vulcans didn't appear to use the appellation "Doctor." Hope this helps.
