My friend says that Spock was called "Dr. Spock". I say NOT!
Maybe in later movies maybe...
I know he's wrong. So I bet him $500 that I could Proove he was wrong! (The
American legal system is not at work here. The burden of proof is on me, even
though He brought it up.)
Does anyone know of any _conclusive_ proof that Spock's NOT a Phd?
Desperatly seeking Spock.

No conclusive proof, but I'm on your side - Spock was called Mister Spock
(just like all the other officers) until he was promoted to captain in one of
those later movies at which time he became CAPTAIN Spock...
Doctor Spock was the guy who wrote all those kid psychology books <wink>...

There was indeed a Doctor Spock. He was Doctor Benjamin Spock, an American
baby doctor who wrote an influential child-raising book in the late 1960's.
When Gene Roddenberry was informed that the name of his Vulcan was of a real
person it was too late to change it. Star Trek and the baby-doctor both
emerged into the public eye about the same time and some people who knew little
of either confused the two into one.

Sorry, you're wrong. Spock was called "Dr. Spock" in Mojo Nixon's
breakthrough tune "Elvis is Everything."
<or was that "Elvis is Everywhere?">
Johnzo.
ps. Of course, Mojo Nixon is canonical, right?
I believe your friend is getting Mr. Spock of the Enterprise (who
probably has the equivalent of several different PhD's, but never calls
himself anything but "Mr.") mixed up with Dr. Benjamin Spock, who wrote
"Baby and Child Care" a long time ago. (A real twit -- some of the stuff
he recommended is a real hoot!)

Which is because only officers of Commander rank and below
get "Mister." Above that, they must be addressed by rank.

This is a quite ordinary misconception though. Leonard Nimoy got
a fan letter from a man that said that he and his wife really loved
his work as an actor, "epecially your role as Dr. Spock on Star Trek."
That has got to be one of the most embarrassing things you can do...

Of course Mojo is canon! In ST VI Spock quotes the Vulcan proverb: Only
Nixon can go to China! Who else could he have meant?
