Ok I have been reading these posts for several weeks now. I would like
to say I am a fan of BOTH ST and SW...but I have to say that IF the
Empire were to land their ground forces on Earth, they would tear the
living snot out of StarFleet Headquaters. In all of ST I have never seen
any REAL ground forces. Take the Empires AT-ATs, AT-STs, and assault
tanks, mix them up with the Speeder bikes, and the Empires obviously
illegal assasin droids, and what do you have? A HUGE (but extremely cool
and visual battle). Now I could be wrong, I have never read any TMs or
campaign books for ST to know if the federation has ANY ground forces,
ie tanks...etc...
I'm leaving out starships in this comparison, so please don't drag in
that StarFleet vessels would attack from orbit. I would like to know
what everyone else thinks, how would StarFleet (on Earth) defend against
a ground assault?

I can't disagree with you about the Empire trashing StarFleet in a ground
battle. See, I relate StarFleet with a country like Carthage. For the most
part, they were a sea faring culture, and their power lay in their navy. So
I think the problem for the Empire would be GETTING to StarFleet. The only
enemy vehicle able to get to Earth was the Borg, and the Empire isn't as
strong as the Borg. There are border stations, and as soon as StarFleet
Command saw the Empire fleet coming they would rush every StarFleet vessel to
Earth and blow up the Empire ships in orbit around Earth and leave a Empire
land crew on the ground without any coordinated attacks due to no commanders
up in space.

However, since you requested Starships not be included, here's what I see
happening. IF IF IF an Empire task force could land on Earth, they would
blow the shit out of San Fran, and StarFleet would have to shift their
headquarters to prepare. Then, they would call to their allies in space to
send some land crews (a few Klingons maybe, among other things) over. They'd
have to have some sort of land based photon torpedos and phasers that they
could manuever, and I'm sure there would be some Marines. As far as vehicles
go, as far as I'm concerned they don't have any, because no enemy ship could
get close, but they'd tear down a starship and put it's defenses on the
ground. That's what I think would happen.

The problem would be that for every ship Starfleet could muster, the Empire
could muster 5 times the number in ISDs alone. They have around 25,000 Star
Destroyers, which is several times the size of Starfleet and not including
any of the other cruisers, support vessels, torpedo spheres etc....

So even if the Empire isn't as strong as the borg, if you put Starfleet and
the Empire on equal footing weaponry/shielding/range wise you have a problem
for the Federation.

Hmm...how easy is it to rip phaser emitters and torpedo launchers of a
starship? Are they detachable modules? They may well be, it would mean
quick repair for damaged ships.

So once you've landed half the Imperial contigent of Stormtroopers, you have
a bunch of them running around trashing everything. Next, they nick
Federation technology and have a field day with it :P.

What oracle of knowledge spat out that number? In the movie's there
looked to be a hundred large ships((ISD,ICBM'S,BBC's,WHATERVER))
(and that's pushing it) defending the empire's MOST important station
and the Emperor himself.

Just a question.. Does anyone remeber from DS9 about the time of
"Sacrafice of Angels" how many ships Sisko said where in the diffrent
fleets?

They May and they May not be. _*IF*_ they could land on earth there
isn't much of a supply of phaser/torpedo hardware on the planet to rip
according to what the consensous was earlier. They would have to be
pulling
hardware off starships, and that's not very likely... If a ST ship is
damaged bad enough that power fails POOF anti-matter containment is
gone..
no more ship... If a ship is disabled and about to be boarded the
captians
of 99% of the ST ships will do what 99% of all ST captians have done.
Self Destruct. Poof.. No hardware to collect..

_*IF*_ ST and SW where on the same footing with
weapondry/shielding/range
I still think it would take the Empire a little while to figure out what
to do
with it, adapt there powersources, and put it together. And by that
time the war
in space would be done, and -*whoever*- the victors of that would be
would have
no problem clearing the rest of the other side off the planet.

It's not really a problem about landing on Earth, because Starships don't
land on Earth. They're built by the Earth's moon, and it wouldn't be too
tough to take out the torpedo tubes out of a ship being built. Now, I'm sure
at on this starship construcion facility (what's it called? Europa or
something?), they're bound to have torpedo tubes they're about to put in a
ship, 20 ships worth of phaser emitters and torpedo tubes, you know what I
mean?

Well, I'm not sure StormTroopers would do it. StormTroopers are as easy to
kill as security personnel, I thought we were talking about those big walking
guys.

Well, each sector of space is patrolled by a fleet of 25 SD's or
something, and there are thousands of sectors of Imperial space.

I think it was 800 Fed vs 1200 Dom (even though it was blatently obvious
there weren't that many ships).

Actually getting to earth unscathed would be very easy for the empire. All
they would need to do is faint a massive attack at the otherside of the
federation and then jump into hyperspace. Before he ships could be sent to
intercept they would exit hyperspace on the edge of the terrain system. And
then after a short micro-jump they would be either slagging or landing on
Earth. The federation's starfleet would have no hope of stopping them.

Good point there, I had thought about it but never given it a huge amount
of thought. The problem would be landing, as troop carriers are usually
quite vunerable.

Two sources. First is "Wanted by Cracken", in which an Alliance historian
says around 10,000 ISDs, and also says that his estimates are very
conservative. The 25,000 number comes from "Spectre of the Past", in which
Vice-Admiral Palleon gives that figure. And consider the problem faced by
Imperial commanders at Endor - you have to pull enough ships off the line to
beat the Rebels, but not enough that the Rebel Intelligence will notice they
are gone and subsequently realise Endor is a trap. Also, get too many ships
involved and you start hitting your own people. Finally, I only saw 40 Ships
at Wolf 359 and Shelby says it is the bulk of "the Fleet". Yet we know that
is wrong NOW. Things change.

I'm assuming around 5-6 thousand, given that the two Fleets he had combined
totalled 500 ships.

We've seen a ship captured, though. Example: Voyager by the Kazon. It shows
that all you need to do is disable some ships systems and the self-destruct
won't work. All an ISD Captain would need to do is pummel it with some Ion
Cannon bolts until its shields come down, then board it. And the computers
on the ground will have weapon schematics.

What makes you think SW weaponry is inferior to ST weaponry? The asteroid
calcs give us a TL strength orders of magnitude higher than ST ships.

Ah, but you wouldn't keep the designs in one place. The Empire would move
in, take the planet, nick off with some computers, send them back to
Coruscant to be analysed and then if they are needed, adapt them to their
ships.

That being mentioned in a book is fine by me. I'll except that, on the
condition that you let me start pulling numbers/facts out of my ST books. The
last book i read had the X-Men in it with the TNG cast... That was a trip
allright, but if its in the book it must of happened right? The Imp.'s
control a whole galaxy? I'd believe that they need 25,000 ships.. but could

I would still like to know for sure for future reference.. Not that i'm
asking you to find out. I've got the tape of the episode over on the shelf,
but no TV to watch it on as this is exam week and my roomate just left.

What are ion cannons going to do? In SW i know you can disable a ship with
them but i don't think they have the same effect on ST ships... i could be
wrong.. but i think all the enterprise's have been through an ion storm or
two and it just messed up sensor readings...

What asteriod calcs?

I don't think so but this is just my personal opinion... _*I*_ think that
with the Enterprise-A's nav shields up it could fly right through a squadron
of firing Tie's. But that's my opinion and i'm not going to argue it because
both sides energy weapons are imposible. The people who get all irrate about
arguing about exact MW GW TW's are the people i call fanatics not fans.

I like the other guys idea better about if the Empire could take over the
Eutopia Planetia ship yard. Then they'd have a stockpile of parts and the
schematics for every ship.

Why not? This guy is the person that is in control of the Empire for God's
sake, at the very least he'd have at least 5% of the Fleet with him.

I'm afraid not, brother. Droids can only connect to the computer assuming
that there's the little circular thing that R2D2 always attaches himself to.
In the ST universe there ARE no droids, and so for one thing they wouldn't be
able to access the computer, and for the other thing they wouldn't even know
HOW to use the computer. Remember in RotJ, R2D2 got SHOT before he could
even figure out the door on Endor or whatever, and that was in his own
universe. Droid's would have a bit of a bigger problem in the ST universe.

I wish you would stop pulling number out your ass. The Empire wouldn't be
able to pull it's entire fleet from all ends of the universe just to attack
Earth. Remember, as you said earlier, even the EMPORER HIMSELF couldn't
round up more than a hundred ships, a 1/100th percent or so of the Empire
Fleet. Even inthis attack on earth, do you really think it's ad important
as the life of the Emporer, and that they would even put 1/100th of their
resources into taking it?

Unfortunately, the rules regarding ST books and SW books in relation to where
they stand are much different, mainly because a ST book could be contradicted
by the very next episode. For that reason, ST books aren't official - they
don't fit anywhere in the continuity, and therefore they dont fit into this
debate. They both hamper and help your side, leaving you no better off.

SW books are official, providing they don't contradict WEG Sources (like
"Wanted by Cracken") or the movies. In this case, it doesn't, so the figure
is ok - for now.

Well, an Ion bolt of some sort was used to major FUBAR the BOP in
"Generations", and it went right through the shielding. Ion cannons are very
tightly packed and highly charged ionic bolts (heh, that was a stretch if
ever I heard one, coming from me :) that do far more than just scramble
sensors.

Bunch of calcs on the minimum energy needed to vaporise an asteroid, as from
"ESB".

Perhaps we're fanatics, but from our POV we aren't. It is just one way to
measure it. Fanatics, to my mind, are those who won't and can't accept the
opposite POV, even when presented with overwhelming evidence. A few people
on this NG come to mind...

Sure would :). Though depending on how desperate the Federation became, they
could just self-destruct the entire facility.

For the Borg: The Borg reached Earth because of something called Transwarp. If
don't know that is, just ask.

Of course, you could have a bunch of holograms with holo-emitters taking the
battle for StarFleet... but that is another issue.

Most ST books create another ST universe (Yes the books have their own ST
universe, look for a Star-Trek Timeline, you will see how and why.), BUT there are
a few in which Paramount chooses the book to be an episode, so it does not
contradict (very few.).

I'm not questioning why they made it there... But, since you do, what is

have such a port they can directly interface to the computer.

Why? Computers are basicaly the same the universe over and this is more

Yes. You see the reason he can have so few is that he has all the fleets
surrounding his system to protect him also (interdictors happen to stop
anyone from getting close quite well) so he technicaly has most of the fleet
defending him and only a small contingent around him.

Because if he is a very smart fellow, he should know that there is a
possibility he could lose. But you see you're missing the whole idea of this
rebel attack. This was the ENTIRE_REBEL_FLEET buddy. Hate to break it, but
there were no rebels in a significant FORCE that would attack, which would
not warrent keep the rest of the fleet wherever they were guarding whatever.
The Emporer knew that the entire Rebel Fleet was going to attack the DSII, so
of course he got the bulk of his ships to DSII.

Well, that too, but mainly because of the fact that "this guy is the person

that is in control of the Empire"

No, I am right, I'm afraid. Let me pose an example. Joe can speak English,
and Spanish, but when he goes to Russia he is way out of his league. Just
because he can speak a few languages doesn't mean he can speak all of them.
R2D2 has a bunch of connection ports, but when he gets to the Star Trek
universe he is way out of his league. Just because he can connect to a few
Star Wars computers doesn't mean he can connect to the Star Trek ones. So
maybe he can directly interface to the computer (which I find unlikely), but
the point I'm trying to make is that he CAN'T disable the self destruct in
nanoseconds.

Who told you that? Computers aren't the same in a different universe. Let's
go back to the languages example. English and Spanish both have adjectives,
direct objects, predicate nomnitives, etc. But they aren't arranged in the
same way. ST computers and SW computers both do about the same thing. But
they aren't made in the same way. How do I know? Look at them genius.
They're completely different.

Okay, well the ship would put an encription on itself just like Data did when
they were getting taken over.

Droids in SW are nothing more than mobile Ships Computers like the one on the
Enterprise that everyone talks to.

Okay, I'll admit this went way over my head... I don't understand what
you're talking about

He wasn't a terribly smart fellow. He thought he would win, he didn't
consider he would loose. That much should be obvious if you actually watch
the film. The Emperor couldn't divert the bulk of the Fleet for two main
reasons:

1) If you withdraw all of your ISDs from service and send them to somewhere
nobody knows about, the Rebel's INTEL division would have realised something
was wrong and they would have postponed the Endor attack. This is exactly
what he didn't want.

2) The Rebels, whilst a serious threat, aren't the only threat in the
Galaxy. You have local rebels, policing work to do, smuggling, training
excercises, cargo operations, pirates to take care of etc....The second you
remove most of your frontline warships, you're going to loose control.

Look above for possible reasons why not.

Star Wars computers wouldn't be as haphazard as our languages. Its all
numbers, in the end. You're right - an astromech couldn't disable a self-
destruct in a few nanoseconds, but it would only take a few minutes once he
found somewhere to connect into. We've seen that the Isolinear chip tech has
large removable 'trays', he could remove a tray and connect in there.

Given the diversity of languages in the SW universe, compared to all one
language due to the universal translater, SW computers have to be far more
widely versed in different protocals. Threepio, for example, could translate
millions of languages, AND do things like program machinery - not bad for a
simple protocal droid.

Heh, only one ship has Data - it would take an ordinary officer much longer
to encrypt like he did. MUCH longer. Look at Kim in "Scorpion II" - he
couldn't keep 7 of 9 out of the computer, no matter how hard he tried.

Except they do much more. They have to do a much wider variety of jobs.
Assassin droids, cargo droids, navigation and piloting droids and THEN you
have something like the Ships Computer on an ISD, which handles the function
for a warship.

Yeah the Sw ones a pareto superior.
The fact is moron the R2 unit could decypher the language almost instantly
and easily disarm the destruct sequence. Getting to your example Joe goes to
Russia and does not know the language but his handy universal translator
does the job for him.

No it would not. If it would then why did Data do it?

No they have emotions and there are thousands of sentient robots (assassin
droids for example)

The enemy can not get to him (usually) without fighting several other units
on the way.

Okay, here's what I have to say.

Piett: You've convinced me on all points in this discussion, many thanks for
hte enlightenment.

Rush: You're taking all of this WAY to personally, and still don't manage to
convince me. Either lighten up or shut up.

Okay, I guess you're saying that essentially it will be a computer
language problem, i.e. one using BASIC and one using PASCAL. But since
we know the Federation uses binary code for their computers (why?
because that's what we have now, and it is the simplest and most
efficient to use), then who's to say that the Empire doesn't use the
same system? And given that, it is possible for a R2 unit to just shut
the whole thing down. For that matter, how about a power surge?
Taa-daa!

Actually the problem he is stating is the physical problem of interfacing
the R2 unit with the ship's computer. Besides that there is the problem of
solving the software translation. The same reason why a droid would be
ineffective against a Star Trek ship is the same reason why a Borg Drone
would not be able download every stat and technical readout of a ship within
seconds of finding a terminal. Both would require significant time. It is
just an anomaly that every one in the ST universe uses the same computer
data technology.

BTW disabling a self destruct on a ST ship would never be an issue. The
standard tactic in assaulting a ship is to first disable it. This causes all
computer systems to overload and remain shut down till the ionizing
radiation is purged from their systems. Unfortunately this would mean the
systems containing the antimatter would shut down. And moments later,
Kaboom! Too bad ST ships use such volatile fuel. No wonder the empire
apparently decided to choose a much bulkier energy generation technology.
