I'm curious because it seems like other fandoms (specifically the "X-
Files") have fanfics that are pretty much classics - ones that everyone
reads or are a good starting place for people who are beginning to read
fanfic.
Any ideas? I don't plan to do anything w/ this info - just curious to
see what people come up with.

This series is great, too. http://members.aol.com/DangerMom/home.html
I'd add Wildcat's site http://members.tripod.com/~TSU_Campus/Wildcat.html

And I'm shamefaced to say that I am debilitated enough that I can't remember

Lori
The first fanfic that I ever read and which I have judged all others against
was The Dark Is Rising, I was introduced to it by a friend and fortunately
it was half term. I sat at the computer for hours just reading and thought
it was simply superb.
Another favourite was Enemy of Mine Enemy. I far more enjoy the mini-series
stories rather than the short one offs.
Lisa
I just treat that as a very lovely, highly angsty look at the base, core and
general template of the Tom Paris character. It was written a LONG time ago
now but remains one of the best, if not the best, pieces of purely Paris fic on
the web - and if you want to do Paris - no matter how domesticated he's become
(Moneans aside) - this is what I'd recommend.
If you want to do Janeway then Talking Stick is a good jump off point...but a
lot of m.c.moose's work sets up a Janeway I'd like, Boadicea fashions a Janeway
you could hate - but somehow can't, Kelly does Janeway from the outside to a
tee...and August never fails to make me feel sorry for her. Complex lady,
ain't she?
I've got to put a word in for NovaD's Mistress Janeway series that I'm still
ploughing through...and enjoying every minute of.
And Gina Dartt's series of J/7 is always value for money, or lack of the same.
Jenn darling has pretty much covered P/T bases...
Hmmm.
Kat~
Another favourite was Enemy of Mine Enemy. I far more enjoy the mini-series
stories rather than the short one offs.<<
Who are they by, and what are they about?
~~DM
Thanks to those who mentioned my name--let me cast another vote for m.c. moose,
and add "The Bones of My People" by Miss Elise, plus the Aurora Series by Julie
Evans, as two excellent "what if" Voyager scenarios.

Another good crossover is the ongoing "Future Winnings" by
Ecolea. This "Voyager/X-Files" gem of a series has Agent
Mulder joining the crew of Voyager after being retrieved
from suspended animation from the spaceship which fled the
Antarctic in the X-Files theatrical movie. It is mostly
told from Mulder's point of view, and can be found at the
"X-files" fanfiction archive at http://fluky.gossamer.org.
For superb "DS9" reading, I recommend anything by Gabrielle Lawson. Her
stories center around Dr. Bashir, and if there
was any justice in the world, her novels "Oswiecim" and
"Pain of Memory" would have been published professionally
by Pocket Books. These, and the rest of her works, and be
found at http://www.stormloader.com/glawson/writing.html.
Happy reading everyone.

Sorry, The Dark is Rising is a series based mainly around J/C but with
plenty of Tuvok and Tom as well. The basic idea is that Janeway and some of
the crew are kidnapped and have to be rescued which they are, the series
then goes on to cover the consequences of how Chak has rescued them and then
the subsequent need to return to the planet. The whole series is far darker
in tone than on the tv and this is a Chakotay I would dearly love to see on
the screen, he has far more depth and is the man I once thought we would get
before the writers wimped out on us. The Tom Paris scenes in the 2nd or 3rd
part are wonderfully written, in fact as I read I could so see this being
acted out by them all, something I would pay good money to see.
It can be found at
http://homepages.tesco.net/~tazarizona/STV/Voyager/voyager.html
The other one which I did misquote is Enemy of My Enemy and is based upon
the premise that Chakotay never crashed his ship at the end of Caretaker and
the whole series, about 18 instalments I think, centres around the two crews
working together on the way home, starting from a basis of mistrust and
misunderstanding to its ultimate conclusion. For all J/Cers out there,
there is a lovely part in the cargo bay!!! This has been so cleverly
written, writing in alot of what we have seen on screen and blending it with
fiction. The characters are so alive and so believable that it is another
one that I ache to see acted for real. Gave me a real crick in the neck,
because I didnt want to stop reading!

Great story.

I love anything of Macedon's, and I especially recommend his Jake Sisko
stories. This isn't a character I would have ever thought I would like,
but these stories are among my very, very favorites in all of the Trek
fic to be found on the web. Or off. Macedon also wrote some stories
about a Vulcan and his Greek wife, if I remember correctly, and those
are terrific, too.
Another site I'd recommend is Jungle Kitty's. If you like TOS, you
can't miss her stories! Here is the url:

Wow, Lori, to be mentioned in the same email with Macedon... I'm
incredibly honored.
Wildcat
To tell the truth by Melanie this is my second all time favourite
I loved the whole plot of this one so many surprises and I loved the way Tom
was written and his interaction with the 'Ship' in the story
I'd say anything by Julie Evans is a must read
And definitely anthing by Jenn whose site I have exhausted and hit about 10
times a day at the moment waiting for the rest of one word. But especially
"In the Space of Seven Days" this is my favourite all time fanfic the
characterisations, the action, the tears.
The "Cavit series" from PJ in NH I wish there was more of it
and for NC 17 I'd have to say "For the Moment" which I'm afraid is by jenn I
don't think I breathed from started to finish of this one it is captivating.
and for J/P I' have to say "Touch" by Brenda Antrim
and for angst "In His minds eye" by Margaret Berger(sp?) I cried buckets at
this one
and I could go on forever

okay - just so that everyone is clear here - all of my recs are slash, and
all of them are Garak/Bashir.
Mark Russel Stanley's "In the Dark" series - his Garak and Bashir talk to
each other like they do on TV; the action is good, but realistic. It (and
his other stories) can be found here:
http://members.tripod.com/~MarkStanley/
The "Converse Symmetry" series by Terrie Drummonds - excellent, *excellent*
AU, with lots of G/B content. Can be found here:

*Anything* by Arcady; "Cardassia Sutra" is a favorite of mine, and can be
found here: http://members.tripod.com/~GBLvr/AtoM/Cardassia_Sutra.txt
Anything by BGM; find her fiction here: http://cryogen.com/bgm
Jen Chapman's parodies and Olivia Monteith's fiction; both have sites, but
I'm not sure how often they are updated...
Anything by Kathryn Ramage; all of her fiction is housed here:

The Plaid Adder's teleplays; currently being re-issued in SFOP;

I think my all-time favorite P/T story is "Blood Lust" by Malcom
Reeves. Excellent read. It has everything you could possibly
want in a P/T fic - plot, adventure, engineering action, random
Klingons, random aliens - wonderful all around.
For DS9, Marlissa's "Kalevian Montar" is one of my favorites,
though it's been a while since I read it. I just love the
tension in Marlissa's writing, the excellent characterizations
and detailed descriptions.
There should be more, but apparently my brain did not return

Jane St. Clair--VOY, TOS, a smidge of TNG, het and slash. The absolute best
stuff I've come across, its just amazing.
Katie Redshoes--Torrid is THE Blood Fever fanfic. Amazing.
Melanie--just go and read it.
AnnieM--for newbies to PT smut, there is no equal. HOT.
Margaret Berger--if written, read it. Slash and a touch of het.
Suz Voy--I like a lot of her work, but the single shining example, for me,
of her gift is "A Man, Humming." The "Trade" series was also, in a way,
some of the best indirect character analysis of Kathryn Janeway I've seen.
Boadicea and Kelly--everything.
Kat Hughes for Letting Go, and Habit--Habit beign the one that probably had
the most emotional rollercoastering (is that a word?) I've done in a long

Okay, there are more, but I'm very tired now, and suddenly feel the need to

I restricted myself to TOS because that's what I know fairly well. The one
author I fell in love with outside the TOS universe is Macedon. I was toying
with a Voy story (my first and one and only) so I dipped into the Voy archives
and low and behold found the wonderful, wonderful "T'Kuht Rising." Because
it's Voy I didn't list it on my page but I think TOS readers would love it. It
deals with Spock's son and is just as much about Spock and it gives the most
convincing look at Vulcan childrearing I've ever seen. Everything I've read by
this author is brilliant including some amazing DS9 stories--I love them even
though as a rule I never, ever, ever stray away from TOS.

This is probably nitpicking, but you neglected to specify in your

response is legal...
I already *have* a fan-fic library, consisting of *fanzines*--
mostly what I consider "classics" or contributors' copies of certain
other zines (not to get them confused--they are *not* one and the same

is a classic.
(Not that there aren't some very good stories available online--of

Well, I don't read much--mainly becasue when I'm writing in a fanfic
universe, I tend to stay away from the fic, but here are my recommended
authors:
Joe "Little Otter" Macedon is a writing God. In "Voyager" The "Talking
Stick" stories rock (tho I admit I enjoy his prtions mroe than Peg's,
his co-author). His original Vulcan story is also stunning.
Dangermom, Jenn, and Janet Toner all write excellent Tom Paris and
B'Elanna Torres stories. In particular, I'd recommend Jenn's "In the
Space of Seven Days" becasue the plotting is AMAZING, and Dangermom's
"Daybreak", and Janet's "Mercenary".
LJC

Some? Only, oh, 30-odd years worth...
Well, "Pulse of the Machine" by Jean Kluge and illustrated by Jean and
Marty Siegriest is my all-time favourite TNG fan novel EVER. Sure, it's
1st season, and bears little resemblance to the canon by the time you
reach 7th season, but who cares?
Of course, all I can ever seem to do is chant "Ricker's bar mitzvah,
Riker's bar mitzvah, Ricker's bar mitzvah... Riker's bar mitzvah!" to
the tune of Hava Negila (sp?) every time I get to the one drawing of
Riker and Data in the suits (thank Susan Garrett for that one... I
really must find suitable revenge someday).
And Jean Lorrah (with whom I had the honour of sitting on a panel last
week-end at MediaWest) has some faboo stuff (and two pro Data/Tasha
novels).
I'll add my voice to Macedon's praises. There is a reason why he was 1997's
winner of the Alara Rogers Award for Best Author. 1) he's good. 2) he was out
of the country when we voted so he couldn't protest until we put him up on the
stage.

>B'Elanna Torres stories. In particular, I'd recommend Jenn's "In the

I'll have to add the TNG Q writing Goddesses, Alara Rogers (for Only Human) and
Mercutio, for many works, especially PropinQuity. The only problem with Alara
is she still hasn't finished Only Human.

After that, I'd have to say that any G/B'er should read Terrie Drummonds
'Converse Symmetry'. It's proof positive that fanfiction and slash can both
be on par with professional writing. And, of course, Cardassia Sutra is a
great archive of G/B fanfiction, as is its sister ezine Strange Fits of
Passion.

Anything by August. She writes great stuff. It's emotional, and often has a
neat twist to it that you wouldn't otherwise understand. She writes a broad
variety of material, slash, het, angst... When browsing ATXC the other day, I
found her there and still enjoy her material outside the Trek fandom.
Lingering Effects by Court. It can be found at
http://www.crosswinds.net/~pytzealot/lingeringeffects.html and it is one of the
few song fics that works in any fandom I've read. It has lyrics that go with
the story, compliment it, add to it, and don't distract from it. The story can
stand alone with out that aspect of it and you get the feeling the author
completelt understands the subject matter which adds to the blievablility factor
by ten fold. It is a piece I go back and read about once every month.
DangerMom writes pieces that leave you feeling good and she's a dang good
writer.
Tara O'Shea has written well some rally good, solid pieces. She wrote a piece
for Lower Decks that I loved.
There's a lot of other great material out there that my poor memory just can't
recall right now :)

I kinda really thought that was what you meant but couldn't resist
putting in something about zines. <g>

Geez, that would make a list that would really waste a lot of
bandwidth if I listed every author and every story that I loved. Some,
if not all, of these would pre-date the involvement of most people
currently reading this NG in ST fandom, since the zines I've collected
mostly date from the 70s and 80s, but if you ever come across somebody
selling old zines at a con, this might give you some idea what to look
for.
My favorite zine titles, to limit things a little, were CONTACT,
MIND-MELD and VAULT OF TOMORROW. CONTACT was a K-S friendship/
sometimes borderline slash zine that I can recommend to anyone who
likes those two characters, whether you're a slash fan or not; almost
everything in its 8 issues affected and moved me. MIND-MELD was a Big-
3 zine focusing on Kirk, Spock and McCoy--the same goes for it. It ran
long enough to include some post-STVI stories in the last issue. VAULT
OF TOMMOROW was very similar to MIND-MELD in theme and content. The
same authors kept turning up in a lot of these zines, and IMO with good
reason. Here are a few of them:
Ginna LaCroix was/is my all-time favorite TOS fan-fiction writer;
she wrote (don't know if she's still involved in fandom) K&S h/c
stories, both straight and slash (though I never read the latter, of
course) and was a regular contributor to all of the CONTACT issues, as
well as MIND-MELD and a lot of other major zines of the time. The last
story of hers that I read was a post-STVI piece in the last MIND-MELD
that was just marvellous, focusing on the betrayal Spock felt after
putting so much faith in Valeris and how it might make him reluctant to
trust others again (you have to read the thing--I'm not doing it
justice at all). She was probably my greatest influence; at least one
person has told me that I write rather like her, which I guess makes
sense, since I'd already read just about everything she'd had published
before I ever started writing my own fan-fic. Her stories are much
better plotted than mine, though.
Another good one, or two, is the team of Lynn Syck and Laurel
Ridener, who sometimes join with Mary Rottler. Any of these authors'
names on a story guarantee you a good read with a lot of nice, angsty
h/c. And the Queen of Angst, Martha Bonds, who wrote h/c with a bit
more explicitness to the violence than the others without forgetting
the "comfort" part of the formula. There are more I can't think of
right now. But all these women write well-plotted stories with
excellent characterization (IMO) that will not fail to move you in some
way. If you run across any of these zines at a con somewhere, look for
their names. The zines will likely be pretty expensive unless they're
reprints, but I can promise you they're worth the price.
(My, how I do waffle on.)
