Digest 115: Deep Space Nine General Story
Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine General Story
story = V6 A Discreet Private Inquiry by Henrietta Wotton
comment = A wonderful story, one of my favorites of this past year. I
love the understated motives for Garak's investigation into the
ownership of a possibly stolen book. Garak never actually says _why_
he's so
interested in Preloc's writing and so eager to meet the
author--except,
sort of, to Preloc himself, who is too frightened at being questioned
by this Obsidian Order agent to realize it. I also like Ina's
depiction
of Cardassia's sordid underside and the portrayal of the street boy in

this story.

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine General Story
story = V20 Closure 1/3 by Una McCormack
comment = A somewhat disturbing follow-up to "Afterimage," with Garak
rather ruthlessly manipulating Ezri Dax through the pretense of
counseling sessions, using her as bait in a stalking game...and yet
under Una's
skillful use of points-of-view, he still retains our sympathy. This
is
also an interesting look at Ezri's state of mind while she adjusts to
her recent joining.

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir
story = Y3 Fictions by Henrietta Wotton
comment = I almost always enjoy G/B stories that have something to do
with literature and subtext; the opening conversation here is very
nice
in that regard, as Julian's tests Garak's interest in him via the
relationship of two characters in a novel.

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir
story = Y6 Schemes & Deceptions by A. Kite
comment = A nicely done short story that shifts from Garak's viewpoint

to Bashir's--and we see that both men have been using a certain amount

of trickery to get and to try and keep each other.

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir
story = Y10 On Top Once More by Invicta
comment = This was a terribly funny look at some problems arising from

cross-cultural misunderstanding and interspecies mating. I especially

enjoyed the boys working so very hard to overcome certain anatomical
differences. Hilarious!

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir
story = Y11 Talljet Quartet by Karmen Ghia
comment = My goodness! There's so much here that it's impossible to
address this story even remotely adequately in a few sentences.
Karmen
once again takes her work in new directions that continue to impress
me.
The scope and intricacy of this story, the details, are incredible.
Oh,
and it's a pretty good read too. My favorite bit is the very funny
scenes where the relentless Jir takes an interest in poor Garak.
Beautifully done!

name = Kathryn Ramage
cat = ASC Awards: Deep Space Nine Garak Bashir
story = Y12 Warmth by Mark Russel Stanley
comment = Another of Mark's wonderful little vignettes. This one's
very... um... steamy.
