Digest 274: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author

name = Stephen Ratliff
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A88 Matt Blackwell ... MST Before the Dawn
comment = Matt is here because he MiSTed a story by another author who

barrowed my characters. He's darn good at MiSTing and I've been
brought to my knees by laughter after reading his. I hope to see more
of
him.

name = Stephen Ratliff
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A70 Karmen Ghia ... Talljet Quartet
comment = What can you say about an author who manages to post a 72
part story that maintains consistancy through out? Well, job well
done is
a good place to start. Talent, that's what this author has.

name = Stephen Ratliff
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A34 Djinn ... Another Bad Night)
comment = Okay, I may be biased. After all I've been getting lots of
hard work out of her since the awards begain, and I like to reward
hard
work. That being said, Djinn has consistantly surprised me this year.

Her works in both Enterprise and Original Series have made me nearly
late to work.

name = Lori
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A62 Jemima ... The Author
comment = Jemima brings a dry wit to most of her stories that I find
quite appealing. She has a knack for AU like no one else. I think it's
a
shame her Trek muse has abandoned us. The Museum, The Author, Lethe --

there must be other plot bunnies like these. There should be. Perhaps
a
petition should be started.

name = Lori
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A155 Wildcat ... Thaya
comment = Wildcat has a wonderful way with TOS characters. I find her
entire S/U series stunning and a definite must-read for anyone who
loves
Spock. Uhura becomes so much more than a telephone operator in
Wildcats
stories, and her Saavik is 'the' Saavik -- a wild child who becomes an

officer. I particularly enjoy the way Wildcat's stories are not an AU,

but an addition to canon; she fills in the blanks and lets us view
canon from the backside, so to speak.

name = Lori
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A127 Seema ... Stay
comment = Seema started out in DS9 and branched into Voyager. I've
read
her stories on ASC, but only visited her page last year -- I was
startled to find out that she's quite the prolific writer, and that
her
stories are generally of a quality rarely seen in fanficdom. Lines in
the
Sand and its followups kept me in front of my screen late into the
night.
I'm impressed with the way she handles her characters and continues to

turn out thoughtful, well-written stories time after time. As a fellow

advocate of strong female characters, I find her takes on Janeway and
B'Elanna and Dax refreshing, and one of my favorites is "Season in
Between," which brings Beverly Crusher a new dimension one rarely sees
in
fanfic -- she's an officer, not Jean-Luc's girlfriend. Another
favorite
is "All Things," a Jake Sisko pov story post-WYLB. And I think the
very
first story of Seema's I ever read, Surfacing, will be one of the best

remembered. So will "When on Risa" -- anyone who can turn checke!
rs into innuendo has more creativity than the average bear.

name = Lori
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A116 Rocky ... Ties That Bind
comment = It's tough to judge, there are so many good authors here.
But
for consistently-good stories that you can count on enjoying, Rocky's
right up there with the best of them. From her stories of Janeway's
life-before-Voyager to her episode codas to her contributions to the
Virtual Season 7.5 -- can't hardly go wrong with one of Rocky's
stories.
Rocky has a firm grasp on the characters and the canon of the series.
My
favorites are the stories featuring Justin, the deceased fiance, and
the
postscript to Wolf 359.

name = Stephen Ratliff
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A104 PJ in NH aka Kelhapam ... Porthos' ''Sleeping Dog'' Log
comment = PJ in NH isn't someone who just appeared out of thin air, as

I've read her works for quite some time. However, with Porthos's Logs

this author has found a certain nitch in the group. No one else could

get me interested in a series of stories from a Dog's point of view.
I
have to admit to checking at work to see if she'd posted the next one
in the days following a new episode. I hope she's good a really good
muse, because we aren't about to let her stop writing this series.
(Pressure? What Pressure? ... we just think they are swell)

name = Stephen Ratliff
category = ASC Awards: Alara Rogers Award for Best Author
story = A110 Randy Landers ... Chains of Command
comment = As a member of the Archive Team, Randy continues to
furstrate
me every year. As a reader, I can't get enough of his work. He
writes
for zines, and the quality shows that he's been well taught over the
years in the craft of writing. I know he's also an editor of some
zines
himself, and he's done an excellent job in producing a clear concise
narrative which is a joy to read, and hard to put down
