Voyager: New Life

Turbulent Inception (7/11)
By George Padovan

Strolling down the corridor, side-by-side in silence, Ensign Kim
escorted Lt. Torres to her quarters. Both were bit somber and moody
from the confrontation between Paris and Chakotay thirty minutes ago at
Sandrine's.
Fifteen minutes after Paris left, Chakotay had left as well since
he couldn't stand being watch all the time from the other crewmembers
in the holographic tavern as they conversed about him and Paris.
After talking awhile with Alaya, Chell, and a few others, Kim and
Torres left as well with a good idea on what news would be spreading
throughout Voyager tomorrow. The verbal confrontation, Chakotay being
dressed down by Paris, and the impression that Paris has changed
dramatically since his relationship with the Captain has started.
Already some of the Maquis and Starfleet, who still didn't like the
idea of the Captain dating Paris, sided with Chakotay, while those, who
was on Paris' side, were more convinced than before that the pilot's
heart belonged to Janeway and he would fight for her.
Upon reaching Torres' quarters, Harry broke the silence. "I hate
to imagine what will happen tomorrow once the Captain finds out about
Chakotay's confrontation with Tom."
The half-Klingon engineer nodded her head. "She'll find out about
it alright, and knowing her, she'll ripped Chakotay out. The Captain
is very independent and doesn't appreciate anyone protecting her
private life liked she's a little girl. She can take care of herself
when it regards her private life.
"I know that Chakotay has the right as first officer to tell her
when she should eat or rest when she overworks herself over a complex
problem or situation that threatens the crew or is vital for our
survival. It's best to have a strong, rested Captain than a tired out
person when it comes time to do battle. However, Chakotay has gone too
far to enter her private domain," she snarled obviously not liking what
her mentor and friend had done.
Kim studied her expression as she looked at him. "So it's highly
probable that she would be *furious* with him tomorrow."
"Knowing her, yes," Torres stated with eyes blazing.
The Chief Ops Officer sighed. "Things are sure going to be tense
tomorrow on the Bridge. I sure hope this doesn't blow out into the
fight between the Captain and Chakotay."
B'Elanna saw the fear lurking in her love's dark eyes and her anger
dissipated, so she placed a hand on each cheek before placing her lips on
his. After kissing him, she stroked his cheek to sooth him. "I hope so
too, Harry. We need them to together as a team. Besides, I don't know how
the situation would effect Tom's relationship with the Captain."
After kissing her palm, Harry held her hand. "I like to see Tom
and the Captain be happy, B'Elanna. Everyone deserves it."
"Me too, Harry. Me too," she agreed. After she kissed him again,
she opened her quarter's door. "Good night, Harry. I'll see you
tomorrow."
"Good night, B'Elanna. Sleep well," the Operations Chief
returned.
When the doors closed behind her, Kim left for his quarters. Both
he and Torres slept with uneasy thoughts about what was about to come. Kim
was in a melancholy state while Torres was upset and angry.

Back at Sandrine's, the conversations about the Chakotay/Paris
Confrontation continued unabated. It had been an intense battle of wills
between the two senior officers. So intense that everyone had felt the ice
forming in the room.
Ken Dalby and Linda Henley were conversing together at one table by
themselves.
They were going about as to why Janeway would prefer Paris to
Chakotay. It didn't make any sense to them especially after New Earth. Far
as they were concern Paris was a playboy and wouldn't care much for
anyone's feelings.
"So Ken, you think Chakotay will go further to break Paris and
Janeway up?" Henley asked.
"Knowing him, nope," Dalby replied. "Chakotay will try to *persuade*
Janeway to stop dating Paris. However if Janeway refuses, things will get
rough." Then he paused as a thought came to him. "What about Janeway?
Would she back off her relationship with Paris because of this verbal
fight between Chakotay and Paris?"
Linda shook her head. "I don't think so. The few times I've seen her
with Paris makes me think she's determine to be with him. We've all seen
how she works. Once she makes up her mind, she goes through with her
decision at full warp. Chakotay told me that is the way she is."
Dalby shook his head. "I think we should tell Chakotay we support
him in getting Paris off the Captain. He'll need all the support he can
get."
His friend nodded her head in agreement.

Looking quite normal, Captain Janeway entered the Mess Hall to have
breakfast. Internally, she was worry about what could had happen between
Tom and Chakotay at Sandrine's last night. Monitoring via computer, she
had become aware of Tom leaving Sandrine's only five minutes after
Chakotay's arrival. The First Officer followed suit fifteen minutes later.
Tom's hasty departure in such a short period of time could only mean
something *not* good occurred.
Going over to the kitchen sill, Janeway was aware that several
dining crewmembers were gazing her way as they conversed. She hadn't
spotted any member of the Senior Staff other than Neelix in the
kitchen, but those gazes told her something *definite* happened last
night.
"Morning, Captain!" Neelix cheered as Janeway stood next to the
sill facing the Talaxian. "What can I get you?"
Giving a forced smile, she replied, "I'll have your coffee
substitute with eggs and fruit salad."
"Coming right up," the chef obeyed.
After receiving her breakfast, Janeway had to ask the question
she dreaded to ask. "Neelix, I noticed some of the crewmembers here are
staring at me kind of oddly. Knowing that kind look, I know they fear
me finding out about something. Spit it out, what *happened* last
night?"
Neelix gulped and Janeway noticed. Obviously he knew but he
didn't want to say anything she realized. "It's practically all over
the ship by now." He took in a deep breath before continuing.
"Commander Chakotay approached Lt. Paris last night at Sandrine's on
Holodeck 2 and told him outright that he better not mistreat you. The
Commander still thinks Tom is being a playboy and would intend to hurt
you as he dates you. Tom, being angry, stood up to him and stated he
would *never* hurt you. Tom intended to treat you with respect and
stated he would rather died than to hurt you. After that Tom walked
out."
Much to *his* fear, the pudgy Talaxian saw the Captain's gray-
blue eyes narrowed as they lit up in fire. "I see," Janeway said with a
hard far-away stare, which spoke volumes on how she felt.
//He doesn't *trust* me!// Kathryn mentally screamed about her
first officer. //I would understand if he done it for the sake of being
First Officer in protecting the crew by helping the Captain, but *this*
has nothing to do with the crew! Doesn't he trust me enough to allow me
my private life and who I want to share it with? Tom and I understand
fully if our relationship doesn't work out, we can still remain the
best of friends. We're mature adults and can able to handle any bad
tidings in our relationship with grace. Chakotay has *no* right to
interfere in my private life! Not *one* bit!//
"I'll be on the Bridge," she stated with command to Neelix as she
placed her tray on the sill before walking toward the exit.
"What about your breakfast?" Neelix cried after the retreating
rigid commanding officer.
"Give it to someone else!" Janeway shouted over her shoulder as
she passed the exit startling Lt. Susanne Nicolleti and Ensign Vorik,
who was entering at the moment.
Everyone in the Mess Hall, including Nicolleti and Vorik who
approached the kitchen sill, stared at the closed doors as the Captain
walked away with grim strides.
"The Captain sure looks angry, Neelix," Nicolleti said as she and
Vorik arrived at the sill still looking at the closed doors. "What is
she angry about?"
Voyager's chef and morale officer sighed. "She *knows* about what
happened last night."
Nicolleti and Vorik turned to eye the chef. The short-raven-
haired woman engineer spoke first. "You mean she now knows that
Commander Chakotay tried to brush Lt. Paris from dating her?" Neelix
nodded
The young Vulcan engineer nodded his head in understanding.
"Captain Janeway no doubt would not *like* anyone interfering with her
private life unless it concerns the safety of ship and crew. Commander
Chakotay's interference of her private life would not bold well for him
since the Captain is quite... upset... with the interference."
The Mess Hall's occupants, after hearing Vorik, couldn't agree
more. They all thought that Voyager's First Officer better have a
strong protective spirit watching over him when the Captain faces
him.
Soon after Vorik's statement, the Mess Hall was again alive with
chatter as everyone talked on what the Captain would do to the
Commander.
Neelix faced Nicolleti and gestured to the abandoned breakfast
tray on the sill. "Care for some coffee, eggs, and fruit salad,
Lieutenant?"

The moment Captain Janeway stepped onto the Bridge, all Bridge
personnel, especially Chakotay, knew it would be a *very* tense and
long day ahead. The hard, command expression she wore gave away easily
that Janeway heard what the Commander did last night and she was *not*
pleased.
Even Tom felt the tension despite Janeway's small smile at him,
which stated she wanted him to know she still want to continue the
relationship with him. The pilot, after last night, had wanted Chakotay
to suffer, but even he had realized that it was best for Captain and
First Officer to act liked a team for the sake of ship and crew. Tom
hoped this wedge between Janeway and Chakotay would be temporary. Even
he would like to patch up his differences with the Indian, but first
Kathryn and Chakotay has to patch up theirs.
By lunchtime, the entire crew heard of the Captain's bad mood and
the rift between her and Chakotay. They wondered what she was planning
to do to him and when. One thing was certain. They hoped she does it
*soon* to get it out of her system, because a tense Captain leaves for
a tense and *unhappy* crew.
