The Hegemonic Factor - Part 1
Jean-Luc Picard turned the screen slightly on his desk and shook his
head. Incredible, he mumbled to himself. For several moments he
continued, lost in the report about the starship Voyager until the door
chimed. Come, he said.
Riker strolled into the room with a smile on his face. The smile was
something that Picard was becoming accustomed to seeing since his first
officer and counselor were spending more time together. Have you read
the latest reports concerning the Voyager, sir?
Yes, Number One. In fact, I was just finishing up the reports. They
had an incredible voyage on that ship.
No pun intended sir? Riker continued to smile.
Hmm. Picard looked confused, but only for a moment. Oh, no. No pun
intended. They brought back Borg Technology and even have a Borg as a
crewmember on the ship. It is incredible.
Riker sat down. And besides being incredible, it has created a stir
among the Romulans and Klingons who want equal access to the Borg
technology. They fear the Federation may have an edge in dealing with
the Borg.
The Federation already has an edge, Picard said, ice apparent in his
voice. He allowed no smile as his memories retraced his own time with
the Borg.
Rikers smile faded. Sir, I didnt mean that
Its alright Number One. Picard looked up from the monitor. Compared
to this young ladies tenure with the Borg, my time was short. She grew
up with them, became one of them and has made the adjustment to life
without the collective very well. At least according to these reports.
Yes, Riker thought for a moment to change the subject. Well, it
appears that the crew will be taking teaching assignments throughout the
Federation. I understand that even their holographic doctor is to
remain online and contribute as an instructor at Star Fleet.
Yes. Yes, he has developed into what Captain Janeway describes as an
Holographic Individual with many of the qualities of life. Picard
allowed a smile, knowing that Riker had managed to move the subject away
from the Borg.
I would imagine that Data would be more than happy to help the good
doctor adjust to his new life and the problems of acceptance that will
come with it.
Well, it is all very fascinating to say the least. I would enjoy
meeting the
An intercom voice interrupted, Captain Picard. You have a priority one
transmission from Star Fleet Command.
Picard turned his attention to the monitor and nodded for Riker to stay.
Put it through here, he said.
The face of Admiral Taylor of Star Fleet Command appeared on the screen.
Admiral, started Picard. I have Commander Riker here with me. Is
something wrong?
Sorry to startle you Captain, but no nothing is wrong. However, I
guess youve heard the news by now about Voyagers return?
Yes, Commander Riker and I were just discussing it when you called. It
is always exciting to see the return of a
Yes, very exciting and all that. Rumors indicated that Taylor was
short and to the point. Picard was finding the rumors to be true. The
Borg on their ship, Seven of Nine, is requesting to speak to you.
Apparently, there continues to be problems with her adjustment and
relationships in this area. She specifically asked for the one called
Locutus or Captain Picard.
Picard stiffened at the name. Admiral. I dont know how I could
possibly help this Seven of Nine. I have not been with the collective
for sometime.
We know that, but she is insisting on seeing you and Captain Janeway is
supporting that request. The Enterprise is needed in your area. Ive
sent the Hood to rendezvous with you within a couple of hours. Commander
Riker will have temporary command of the Enterprise until you return.
With all due respect to Captain Janeway, I still do not see
Captain, Janeway is going to be promoted. I expect that she will be
the Admiral you report to on a regular basis fairly soon. Star Fleet is
very interested in keeping her close to home and having constant
lectures provided. Shell have a good job, but nonetheless she will be
your superior. I recommend you make nice while shes still a Captain.
Taylor out.
The screen went blank and left Picard staring. Appears it takes
getting lost and then found to gain a promotion in the fleet now,
commented Riker, trying to break the silence.
Picard continued to think for a moment. Yes, so it would appear. He
stood up, Well, it appears I had better pack. Number One, I trust you
will keep the home fires burning?
Riker smiled, Always do, sir. Always do.
