Scene: The Haydn Apartment, Level Six, Alpha Lunar Base

The soft, but insistent buzzing of the comm, woke Lara, her husband,
Richard, turning over and grumbling in his sleep. Reaching over, trying
not to wake him, she checked the message left by the Commandant. Her
heart quickened with feelings of both nervousness and exhilaration as
she noted that her first session was to start only an hour or so away.

She got up quietly to take a shower, checking in on her young son, David
as she did so. The six year old, the ridges at the bridge of his nose,
the only sign of his Bajoran heritage, not yet fully formed, slept
peacefully. Resisting the temptation to sit and watch him sleep, she
quickly dressed and had breakfast, before taking the turbolift to the
Holodeck.

Noting that no-one was around quite yet, she slipped into the holodeck,
her mind wandering over the scenarios she had spent the last month
devising. She hadn't received her student's bios beforehand, so she
would either have to think on the spur of the moment or give them
something out of the blue.

Her mind was still wandering over the permutations as someone entered
the Holodeck.

Walking the last few steps with military precision, stopped in front of
the door as it slid open and walked through coming to halt. Without
bothering to look whether anyone was in the room, Eric saluted.

"Ensign Eric Cartwright reporting for duty, sir."

Lara was slightly taken aback by the snappy salute she had been given.
It was strange how it was taken as a given in the every day context of
Starfleet, but here, in a holodeck, it felt strange. She looked over
his bio, noting the competitive streak in the young man, as another
officer entered the holodeck.

"Ensign Michel Delorme reporting, sir!" he said in a mix of a casual
and formal voice, handing a padd.

Lara accepted the PADD graciously. "Thank you Ensign." She smiled at
the young officer, who looked sufficiently abashed at her friendliness.
The Bajoran glanced over the bio, nodding to herself thoughtfully. She
glanced up to find both Ensigns standing at attention.

"At ease, Ensigns." They relaxed, although the nervousness still showed
in their unfamiliarity with the situation. "As you may have guessed, I
am Lieutenant Haydn Lara. I am Bajoran, so before you get too confused,
my surname is Haydn, not Lara.

"Welcome to Holodeck 10. I'm sure you've seen holodecks in the past,
and used them for simulations, but this time it's different. This is
the final step before you're sent out to missions across the Federation
and beyond as fully fledged officers of Starfleet. It's here that you
have to prove that you have what it takes." Lara was quite pleased with
the speech, although she wasn't sure if it sounded a bit too contrived.

She turned, facing the exit to the Holodeck. "Computer. Execute Haydn
dash Land dash zero zero six."

[Executing Haydn dash Land dash zero zero six.] the soft voice of the
computer replied. A lush landscape surrounded them, trees and fields of
barley and wheat flowing into the distance. Above them they could here
the sounds of birds as they hunted the myriads of small insects.

Lara spread her hands. "This is the interior of a Dyson Sphere. In
case you don't already know," she noticed that Cartwright was nodding,
"a Dyson sphere is a gigantic sphere in space, where the land is on the
interior of the sphere, lit by a sun in the centre. The technology to
build this is unknown to any race in the known galaxy. Nevertheless,
this sphere has been recently settled by the Federation

"You have been sent here because there have been reports that settlers
have gone missing in recent weeks, and the local government believes
that the original inhabitants are responsible.

"You must find the missing settlers if at all possible, and if the
original inhabitants are here, establish first contact. Diplomacy is
advised rather than firepower."

The Lieutenant pointed over to the horizon. "I'll give you a starter:
There appears to be a stone structure about half a klom in that
direction that is not of Federation origin. It may bear investigation."
She smiled at the two Ensigns. "Good luck." With that, she walked off,
abruptly disappearing behind a tree."
