Battlebridge of USS Minerva

The USS Minerva looked almost nothing like it did thirty-one years before.
Once a proud Galaxy class starship, now it was little more than a battered
hulk, its saucer section completely missing, and all along the hull of the
stardrive section was the evidence not only of the horrific damage the ship
withstood over three decades ago, but also evidence of many battles, much
grafting of alien technology, and considerable adaptations of Federation
technologies to purposes for which they were not designed.

Also strange were three unusual-looking pylons extending from the bow, where
the saucer section would have been. At the tip of each pylon was a sphere,
and a maze of microfilaments connecting them back to the stardrive section.
The whole thing looked more like a Borg cancer than a functional starship,
though there was a singular method to the apparent madness; an overwhelming
desire to get home.

In the storage room adjacent to the battlebridge, Commander Tomita's
De-Facto ready room, her senior staff was gathered for a talk not unlike the
one Captain Tucker gave twenty-one years before. "Our chances are not
great" Tomita began, "but the Kelani technician is confident that the
structure will hold, and unlike Starfleet's installation, ours has an eject
mechanism."

"Do you really think this will fly?" Flynn asked.

"Well, its not too late if you want to remain on Kelan with the other
settlers, Mike."

"No Captain, I'm in this to the end. Just give me the word."

With that, the officers took their stations, the senior enlisted long since
having received field commissions by the acting Captain. "Commander Flynn,
is the Escher Drive charged?" she asked.

"Charged and ready, Captain" he replied.

"Engage" she ordered, on the surface as calmly as any other order she had
ever given, though suddenly understanding what Tucker's last moments must
have been like, she was anything but calm under the surface.

"Warp 3, warp 7, warp 11" Flynn began, but Tomita cut him off saying "I
don't care the bloody speed, just tell me we're ten seconds from the origin
point."

Everyone waited in silence, watching the familiar image of the artificial
wormhole on the screen. The minutes seemed like hours and all were
concerned that the strongly vibrating remnant of the USS Minerva would
vibrate herself apart before they arrived, when suddenly Flynn cut in with
"Ten seconds to origin. Eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, and
ejecting spheres."

Slowly the vibration subsided and then with much delight, Flynn announced
"Captain, we're being hailed."

"On screen" Tomita said.

A young-looking woman wearing very Federation-looking uniform appeared on
the screen. "This is Captain Thorne of the USS Macronin, please identify
yourself."

What replaced the strange, battered hulk on Thorne's screen was an image of
a woman at once both haggard and regal. While her uniform had the colors
for the intelligence branch, it was torn, patched and badly faded, not to
mention three style revisions out of date. The Asian woman wearing it was
gray-haired, though with the exception of a rather prominent scar on her
cheek looked rather young and pretty. There were three pips at her collar,
and a silk sash of ancient Japanese style around her waist, the sash holding
two traditional Japanese swords, a matched set of obviously incredible age.
"Pleased to meet you Captain, I am acting-Captain Akiko Tomita of the
Starship Minerva."

Thorne turned to her exec and after pulling up data on the Minerva,
instantly matched the battered hulk previously on her screen with a Galaxy
class stardrive and the person on her screen with the Minerva's Intelligence
officer. A bit of mental arithmetic and Thorne knew that the woman she was
talking to, 31-years after Minerva's accident and listing as lost with all
hands, was now 67-years-old. "Welcome home Captain" was all she was able to
say, what other words could possibly have any meaning.

NRPG: Well, that was seven-months-ago, and after a month of medical
recuperation followed by six months of debriefing and retraining, she should
soon be summoned by the CINCGREEN. Bio follows

B. Background Summary:
-----------------------

She is extremely fit, though suffers from the residual effects of many old
wounds, such that even simple tasks such as walking are accompanied by
extreme pain, which she merely chooses to tolerate rather than treat
chemically. While she worked in assignments for may years that most would
consider questionable (anti-terrorism involved a lot of under-cover), she
has always maintained her personal honor and lived according to strict code
of Bushido (the way of the warrior).

Her early childhood could only be described as masochistic, as her father
brutally poured his own twisted version of Bushido into his only child. By
the age of seven she was already a deadly swordsman.

At Starfleet academy she excelled, however she was recruited by Intelligence
when in the handito-hand combat portion of her first year phys ed course,
she put the instructor to the ground in barely the blink of an eye. She
repeated this with anyone she was paired with, until Intelligence realized
that something special was in the first year cadet class. Tomita didn't
disappoint, proving equally adept with phasers and all other weapons she was
trained in.

Her early career is mostly classified, as she was sent undercover into
various terrorist organizations to infiltrate, and ultimately take down.
She was exceptionally good at her job, however in her last such mission she
was gravely injured and rotated out of the program for shipboard duty.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV. Skills Profile
------------------

Commodore Tomita is an expert swordsman (perhaps the best in the Federation)
and martial artist, though she rarely shares these talents with others on
account of the extremely violent nature of her arts, which were passed down
from her reclusive father. In addition, she has a type of charismatic
presence that drives people to succeed, as evidenced by the 31-year odyssey
she led the survivors of the Minerva on to get home. She is also a passable
tactician and an able statesman.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Recent Fitness Report
--------------------------

Commodore Tomita is in excellent health, however she is also in considerable
pain. What disturbs me is that her old injuries are entirely curable, only
she refuses to undergo treatment, choosing instead of live with arthritis
and both muscle and nerve damage. I do not accept her reasoning that old
wounds remind us of our failings, nor can I consent to her continued service
while refusing treatment.

Dr. Harold T. Molina, Starfleet Academy, after Minerva's return.

- Overided by Rear Admiral Victoria Humphries, SF MEDCOM

------------------------------------------------------------------------
VII. Psychological Profile
---------------------------

What a fascinating tale this woman can tell, having survived a failed
experiment and then led the remnants of her crew for the 31-years it took to
rebuild and return. Anyone with such willpower and motivation has proven
clearly that she has what it takes to accomplish the mission.

Doctor Junko Watanabe, Starfleet Academy, Counselor

------------------------------------------------------------------------
VIII. Current Recreational Interests
-------------------------------------

Tomita spends most of her free time in Japanese cultural pursuits, including
flower arrangement, calligraphy and landscape painting. Her physical
fitness regiment requires two hours every morning to keep herself limber, at
the end of which she is as strong and flexible as a fit woman of
considerably younger years, though the pain is ever-present.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
IX. Miscellaneous Information
------------------------------
Commodore Tomita is rather secretive about the past, and prefers not to
discuss the events on the Minerva with those who did not experience them
firsthand. She and the other survivors, her husband and son included, have
planned to hold annual reunions aboard the hulk, which has been placed in
its current condition with the rest of the mothball fleet at Memory Alpha.

Currently she is trying to get to know her daughter, the Ops officer on the
USS Midway.
