Happy with that "Peter McMahon"???
I was going to make comment how Sunderland and other areas would
benefit from inward investment and resulting jobs as a direct result
of a sucessful 2008 bid by Newcastle-Gateshead. However, if you
insist in dragging this all into the gutter because not just you, but
a great deal number of other Geordies have been such bad losers over
this, especially when I would say a majority of Mackems supported the
bid, then I'm more than happy to oblige...
...oh, enjoy the interest payments on your Mastercard bill!

OK then.
People keep saying that, but it doesn't make it so. The clue was in the name
'Newcastle and Gateshead'. Any benefits would have been mere dog-ends and
hardly worth it. What I'd like to see is a genuine effort by Sunderland
Council to make it a city to be proud of on its own merits, but that doesn't
look to likely at the moment.
A perfect example of our pessimism was the council's refusal to bring back
that ship to convert into a floating museum. The Geordies do have a valid
point when they knock Sunderland, we always have been and apparently always
will be a backward, unadventurous, dull city. Sometimes you have to take
chances and spend money to move forward, and TBH Newcastle has done far more
than us to improve the city. I will never understand how they can afford
these improvements and we can't, maybe Mick or Andrew (where is he?) can
explain it?
Dave

Do you mean Andrew "Nostradamus" Gotherd? Author of hundreds of
interminable posts about how NUFC were going to go bust and get relegated?
The man who foresaw Sunderland on the verge of a brave new world of
European football and huge profits? That should be interesting.
hi Beefy.
you have been a bit trolled i see.
long time no see, mind. how the devil are ye?
dave.
Well, it could still happen ;-)
Seriously, NUFC took the risks, but luckily for them it paid off. NUFC got
it right and SAFC got it so badly wrong, but it could've been so very
different.
Dave
> can

Speaking as someone who was a long standing member of the Labour Party in
the city, mainly due to the fact that tehre was always more interest in
petty infighting and wallet lining than the city in the council. Certainly
that was the view put forward by a late friend of mine who was involved, for
example, in the Metro planning on our side. She was bunged into it on the
grounds of being 'one of us', with the promise that 'we're all Labour
working together' - and when she (after 2 meetings) realised we were being
stitched up, begged them to replace her with a guy from thePoly who was a
transport specialist who could put our case better. "Oh no - we can't do
that - he's not 'one of us'". So she resigned in order to try and force
their hands. She reckoned that the 'one of us' who replaced her was so
clueless he didn't even know that he knew nowt and we were being fucked
over. Of course - she could have been wrong - but look at the result and
draw your own conclusions.
"Don't worry, Peggy - we're all Labour together". I'll leave it to you to
work out who was right
>

I wish I could explain it, I really do.
For example, the ship. Ok, £10m plus quite a bit a year (iirc)
apparently to keep it going. I have to say, I find the running costs
to be absurdly high, but never mind. Is this not a perfect lottery
application? Have the council even bothered to ask? Have they tried to
raise a trust to contribute?
I was going to list a hundred other things, but I wont. The Wearmouth
column in the Echo seems to be doing a better job than I could with
all of this.
What all of this does, is make me want to go into local politics. I am
not a member of any political party, nor do my views lean towards one
party more than any other. However, the people of Sunderland seem so
fixed in their voting for Labour, that the council know they are safe.
Ok, a couple of councillers here and there may lose their seats, but
the Labour majority is safe. And what do they do for their positions?
Can somebody explain? Our council needs a strong kick up its arse, and
I dont mean voting for the BNP. Either we need a few non-party people
on board (preferably without any hidden agendas), or we need a strong
swing in vote away from Labour. Mind, the way Blair is going, this bit
may be easier than we think!
The amount of investment this city needs is horrific. We need (and
this is just off the top of my head, anybody else please contribute):
1. A train Station.
2. Half of the city centre either rebuilding, or renivating.
3. A new bridge.
4. A Cinema.
5. The old Vaux site turning into an Economic centre (Something the
city does not have, and is vital for jobs)
6. More "culture" buildings, either in the city centre, or in support
of the few we already have, such as the Glass Centre. (an art gallery
would be a good start, or how about a shipping and mining museam?)
7. More promotion, and possibly more spending on the contents of the
Museam.
8. Some direction for the city.
What we do not need is for the very few, succesful Sunderland based
businesses, to then piss all over us. You know who I mean, Swallow
Hotels.
And as a letter in the Echo said the other day, what is going on with
the Mayor? We still have an unelected mayor, with all the trappings.
Why? Can anyone name any of the last, say, five holders of this title?
What do they do? Why are they not more prominent, more visible? Why do
they cost so much each year?
And in an area of reletivly high unemployment, more help for new,
local businesses, maybe a partnership between the council and the
university (which already has some schemes running).
Sorry for going on like this in the footy newsgroup, but it is one
thing that is really bothering me at the moment! There is nothing like
living away from the area for a few years, looking at other cities,
and then coming back here.
Its depressing.

Better education for posters perhaps (RenOvating., MuseUm)?
Seriously though, how about a Metro that goes somewhere useful?
I used to be able to get regular trains from Seaburn/Sunderland to
Newcastle. Now I can get Metros instead (which, incidentally, you can't take
bikes on, unlike trains).
But what about the place most in need of decent transport links, probably in
Britain?
Yup. WASHINGTON. No train station. No Metro. Piss poor bus links.
If it's too expensive to build a bridge there, why not have one terminus on
either side of the river?
Yea, well fair enough, but I've been dying to get that wisecrack off
my chest since the bid was turned down. The troll just gave me the
excuse. ;-)
Serious case of waste of tax payers money and some of thsoe jobs would
have filtered through to Sunderland, so yes, it would have been good
for the North East as a whole.
Me? Apart from trying to finish off a Ph.D. thesis, fine - cannot
even use football as a stress relief, but that's one of the ups and
downs of being a Sunderland supporter.
How you going yourself and whats Porkers up to these days? Him and

See, in my naivity, when the metro expansion was announced I
automatically presumed it was going to go all the way to Washington,
along the old Penshaw rail line.
And then it didnt. Is a Metro bridge really that expensive? But then,
as Sir John Hall told us, we don't need any more bridges across the
Wear. I mean, why would we want to improve transport links and thus
the economic viability of the city??

Two points here:
1) The Victoria Viaduct is available near Fatfield, which could be
shared between Metro and the new Leamside services. This is
something that Nexus have dismissed. A case of slowly completing the
job of easing Washington into the Newcastle camp methinks.
2) Sunderland Council have touted the building of a road bridge
between Pallion and the Wessington Riverside Business Park. The
bridge wiuld be level with the top end of the retail complex there.
This could be a combined road / metro bridge and even if the metro
does not connect to Washington, then half of the metros terminating at
South Hylton could terminate over the river, serving the retail park
and the nearby residential areas.
Blow me, if I'm not turning into an anorak! ;-)

Is it wide enough for Metros? Don't they need more space than trains for
pylons etc?
I have to admit I haven't seen the inside of the winter gardens yet!
It does look nice from the outside, and I was shocked to see how they
had cleaned up the park. But what about the other parks? Barnes Park,
for example, is in a right old state. They can't even open the tennis
courts now.
The air show is excellent, and is something that we need to build on,
to try and give the city some identity away from the football.
---
Mike Garry
You can stick the supports for the pylons on the OUTSIDE of the
bridge. Any engineer worth his salt should manage that.
Ian
The Strategic Rail Authority whinge on about too many trains on the
East Coast Main Line. Simple answer is to get about three new diesel
locomotives and divert any services terminatiing at Newcastle from the
ECML to the Durham East Coast line. These would run in place of
local trains, thus improving service and reducing on line congestion.
If Sunderland City Council were any good, they'd be pushing like crazy
for this, rather than being satisfied with being lapdogs for an
overinflated Newcastle.

Both cities have shit areas, every city in the country does so there is no
point bickering like bitches about it! Sunderland did need regenerating as
it was drained of resources for years (cue Michael Garry, Andrew et all) but
now things are massively improving. The thing that bugs me about Newcastle
(and Sunderland recently) is that they spend millions on improving the city
centre and other nice areas but the shit areas are left to be shit, not
right IMO!
--
DoctorMick
its the same in every city.
but in all honesty, if tehy spent millions improving the shit areas,
they'd only look nice for a year or two until the people who live
there turned them into shitholes again.
which is exactly what'd happen.
doesn't matter how nice an area looks, if its populated by people who
don't give a toss, it'll not last.
