Hi.

My favourite non-league games?

Formby 5 Ashton 0 (Lamot Pils Cup 1st Round 1st Leg, 1990)

Impressive because Formby were certainly not the *best* side in the
division (Bass NWCL Div 2) at the time!! (Like, they hadn't had their
first victory of the season yet ...)
In fact, I think I saw them lose far more often than they even drew!
(Incidentally, they lost the away leg, but only 3-2!)

Bootle 2 Southport 0 (FA Cup 2nd Qual, 1990)

First FA Cup game I ever saw (with the possible exception of one or
two at Everton when I was very young!). Notable for having the worst
goal I've ever seen, when a Southport defender gave a backpass to his
goalkeeper from about six yards, who let it run through his legs and
into the goal!! At the time, Southport were two divisions higher, so
it was something of a cup upset.

Cinderford Town 2 Bromsgrove Rovers 1 (FA Cup 1st Round proper 1995)

Fog, rain, muddy pitch, freezing cold weather, a penalty to Bromsgrove
10 minutes from time to make it 2-1, and 5 minutes of injury time -
kind of a nailbiter!!! Typical cup tie, really!

Hednesford Town 1 York City 0 (FA Cup 3rd Round proper 1997)

Whether or not this one counts, I have to include it, as it's the
first time I saw a Conference side beat a Non-Conference side!! And
did it comfortably too.

There were a couple of good matches I saw on Wire TV during the last
season of coverage, but I can't remember any specific ones!

You will notice they are all cup games. This is because the team I
saw most in any league were Formby, who did not generally produce good
matches!

Bye,

IAN!!

How about

1) Southport 1 v 5 Macclesfield (GMVC) 96/97 ?

It was pretty spectacular (from our end anyway) with Goalkeeper Price
stretchered off (Broken nose, 2 broken cheekbones and broken jaw)
after 10 mins.

2) Macc 3 v 1 Northwich (FA Trophy Final) 95/6 for obvious reasons

Some games I remember as being 'the best game I've ever seen' but
can't remember why (or when)

3) Macc 3 v 3 Barnet first game of the season (1990. I think)

4) Chester 3 v 2 Macc (FA Cup 1st round replay) (1990 again?)

5) Macc 3 v 2 Woking (Champion Shield) 95/96 (2-0 down and won it aet)

6) Macc 2 v 1 Stevenage (GMVC) 96/7 Macc had Howarth sent off after 8
minutes

WORST Games..

1) Macc 0 v 1 Gretna (FA Cup 4th qualifiying)
2) Fisher Athletic Pv P Macc (GMVC) - I made the journey there cos I
was working in the south but the M6 had been shut and nobody else
turned up (including players)

My WORST games:
1) Southport 1 v 5 Macclesfield Town (1996/97 GMVC)
It may be the best from your point of view, but from ours.....
2) Burscough 0 v 0 Southport (1996/97 LSC)
Most boring game I've ever had the misfortune of watching
3) Southport 0 v 0 Dover Athletic (1995/96 GMVC)
Again, it wasn't that thrilling

worst of all, FA Cup 4R qualifier:

Stalybridge 2 Colwyn Bay 2 (on my f***ing birthday, too!) and needless to say
we got hammered in the replay

A list of my favourite non-league games(very tricky):

1. Kidderminster 3:3 Lincoln City (GMVC 87/88)
This one was a long time ago, when the cycle track was
still at both ends of the pitch, with no stands. Both teams played
brilliantly and the result was about right.

2. Bromsgrove 0:3 Kidderminster (GMVC 93/94)
It's obvious why I put this one in. It was played on a
frozen pitch in front of one of Bromsgrove's biggest crowds;
3938(more than half were Harriers fans).

3. Stevenage 2:2 Kidderminster (GMVC 96/97)
This is the best match I've seen this season(so far).
AFAIK the attendance of 6489 is Stevenage's best ever(correct me
if I'm wrong). The match was closely contested and the final
result could so easily have been 3:2 to either side.

4. Bath City 3:5 Kidderminster (GMVC 94/95)
This was Lee Hughes' first full match, and he scored a
hat-trick. Also it was one of those games where both teams had the
lead and lost it. I got to this match 10 minutes late but still
didn't miss any goals.

5. Birmingham City 1:2 Kidderminster (FAC 3 93/94)
I know this isn't strictly non-league but sod it. The
Harriers performance in this wasn't brilliant, but the atmosphere
and the occasion were enough for any Harriers fan to remember(6000
Harriers fans travelled to St. Andrews). The applause the team and
fans received from the Blues supporters was superb.

Regards,
Tom Bonnick

Well, we got thrashed.

The first half was almost a good game ... if a 0-0 with all the players
stretchered off with broken ankles is your idea of a good game. Stevenage
scored (who I don't know) from a square ball late in the first half.

In the second half, the Stevenage No. 10 tried a long low shot. It bounced off
the far post, and went in. 0-2. Bastard. Then someone else gets on the end of a
good cross completely unmarked. I don't know who, because I was too busy
groaning and burying my head in my hands. 0-3.

Now Celtic start passing badly and run out of ideas. They keep playing through
balls or high ones over the top of the defence, which is a bit of a waste of
time as ALL the Stevenage defenders are faster than ALL the Stalybridge
strikers. Brendan Burke gets a nasty ankle injury and is taken off on a
stretcher after trying to beat Sodje to one of those wasted through balls. Then
one of our own bloody supporters starts threatening and insulting me for waving
a Romanian flag. I remind myself that people died fighting the Securitate in
order to wave that flag, and no fat middle aged git (even if he is the chairman
of the supporters association) is going to stop me. I start slamming my fist
into the crush barrier and he mysteriously disappears.

Full time. Slope off home, and the bloody train back is late. Not a good day.
Why couldn't I have been a glory hound?

We didnt get thrashed but we might as well have O-1 to Dover!
at least Stevanage are 3rd from the top not 3rd from the Bottom

Why Romanian???

Howfar are you Travelling to watch this load of rubbish then?

and you said last week after the 2-2 draw it will be interesting to see
who finishes higher S.F.C. or S.C.F.C.? it'll probably be Dover at this
rate, and to cap it all we've to go down to the Crabble next Sat
for the return game!

Why not? What's so offensive about it? Apart from being a great admirer of
Romanian football, I think the flag should work as a "bad luck absorber" - you
can't get much unluckier than Romania in Euro 96 after all ... this theory now
appears to be wrong. I got it watching them at Elland Road. Anyway, I'll keep
taking it along now and then, and if Mr. Blobby and his mates want a fight, so
be it. Romania is bigger than Stalybridge.

Update to my list:

1) Woking 0 v 1 Southport (GMVC) 96/97

Best all round team performance I have ever seen. Dave Rogers man marking
beautifully, Martin Clark playing his socks off, and to top it all off -
Southport getting their first ever goal at Kingfield Sports Stadium via Andy
Whittaker's blessed golden boots.

2) Macclesfield Town 3 v 2 Southport (GMVC) 96/97

Even though we lost, Southport played extremely well (leading 2-1 until the
84th minute) , and it made my weekend to see Ryan Price's face when he
punched the ball into his OWN net, and to completely mess up to let in the
second - from a 20yd shot by Phil Horner.
It must be the first time I've ever seen a Goalkeeper crack under so much
pressure from away fans, he completely lost it! Anyone who went to that
match knows what I mean. :-) <Very Big Grin>
The away fans were so well behaved weren't we boys? - Yeah right :-)

3) Southport 4 v 4 Macclesfield Town (SCC SF1) 95/96

Eight classic goals, needs no explanation really.
Davenport's goal from near enough the half way line - hitting the ball on
the turn, and the volley leaving Ryan Price stranded.

4) Southport 2 v 1 Macclesfield Town (GMVC) 95/96

1-1 until the last couple of minutes when Neil Mitchell scored on the turn
to send the Haig Avenue crowd completely ecstatic and Ryan Price into tears.
Southport dominated the game - completely deserving the points that they
got.

5) Southport 2 v 0 Woking (GMVC) 94/95

The last game of 94/95 - Southport finished in 3rd place and if they had
played anything like this for the whole season we would've been back in the
Nationwide league (or Endsleigh/Barclay whatever it was then). Mind you, we
weren't far off though.

Well if I had to pick one game it would be the first non-league game I
ever went to.

Bury Town 8 Buckingham 0
Beazer Homes League (Southern)

A one off result that I'm sure I will never see the likes of again.

I agree that it was a great game, but for different reasons!

Since that game, Price has had a few other dodgy games. He is never a
spectacular keeper, but has always been safe. He seems to be making a
number of mistakes these days that are leading to goals. (how can you
concede 4 against Hednesford?)

Macc do not have a reserve keeper. When Price was injured (at
Southport), Sammy went to his old mate Lou Macari and took a Stoke
reserve keeper on loan. He was not allowed to play in the FA Cup, so a
keeper from the Bollington third division played against Rochdale,
even though he had a gammy knee - a Macc defender had to take all of
the goal kicks.
