Robbie Dillon is a 36 year old married man with two young children. He
has had, for the past eleven years, a very rare form of cancer, located
deep above his palette, close to his brain. The continued growth and
location of these tumours has rendered further surgery virtually
impossible, however, a new surgical technique developed in Toronto,
Canada, has given Robbie the hope of a potentially life-saving operation.
The Canadian surgeon, who developed this new technique, flew to Dublin to
see Robbie on Friday 8th August. After examination, he felt that surgery
would have a very high chance of success and has recommended that Robbie
travels to Canada as soon as is physically possible. Robbie+s current
course of treatment must first be completed in St. Luke+s Hospital and it
is hoped that surgery will take place in Toronto during November +97. The
cost of the surgery, aftercare and peripherals will amount to £60,000.
This sum needs to be raised before travelling.
All the relevant authorities have been approached for funds for the trip
and while I am confident that some money will be forthcoming, I do not
know to what sum those funds will amount. It leaves our committee without
a recognisable financial target, but with the daunting realisation that
we must cover all possible eventualities. Put quite simply, we have until
November to raise £60,000.
The committee, made up of Robbie+s friends, has set in motion a series of
fund raising activities, for which we are totally dependent on the spirit
and generosity of, not only the local community, but on our extended
networks of friends and colleagues that stretch beyond Clondalkin. We
would be deeply grateful to you for any kind of support that you can give
and I am appealing to you in the hope that you will be as generous as
possible in your consideration of our cause.
May I take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your kindness and
support.
Yours sincerely
